Best action movie i've seen in a long time: Dredd

Watched it recently at home.
Awesome flick! Just non stop action! No character development, no stupid love stories, just extreme action! Isn't that what an action movie should be about? Weird how you rarely see it like this.
It kinda reminded me of the last Rambo movie. Which was great as well.
Oh and the surround sound was insane! Best i've heard in a while.

Love that movie. Haven't watched it with surround. Will do so soon.
And i wasn't being sarcastic.
It's 90 minutes of action...from the first to the last minute. It was awesome!

I've actually heard from a few people that Dredd was awesome. Sucks it did so lousy at the box office because it was tainted by the original "Judge Dredd" with Stallone back in the 90's. For the record, I didn't think that one was as horrible as everyone made it out to be.

Have to agree that the last Rambo was pretty fucking awesome. If Dredd reminds you of it then I'm watching it for sure!

Hmmm, thought it would be one to avoid to be honest.

I'll give it a try though. Sick of boring shitty movies that i usually wish all the characters would just die in the end...

I'd like to confirm your misgivings.

I thought Dredd was a below-average action flick and a total failure as an adaptation. It didn't have any of 2000 AD's sarcasm, social satire or humor. I would argue that Stallone's Dredd, as awful as it was, was still a better adaptation than Dredd 2012 was.

And imho the constant use of slow-mo kills the flow of the action. Slow-mo should be used sparingly, like salt in cooking. If you pour it every-fucking-where then it loses its point and just drags everything down.

It's used 4 times maybe, for a total of 2 mins?

And saying the first Dredd movie is better is ridiculous and you know it.
You clearly have something against this movie, which is fine, but stop making things up.

I'm arguing Stallone's is a better adaptation, meaning they at least tried to keep some of the humour and satire from 2000 AD.

Dredd 2012 didn't have any of that. It's simply a cheap action film which just happens to have Judge Dredd as a character, keeping only the most superficial bits of the source material (omfg he didn't take the helmet off epic win)

I'll prove it to you: you can take "The Raid: Redemption" put Judge helmets on its characters and BAM you got Dredd 2012, except it would have kick-ass action.

What I have against the movie is that they completely wasted Dredd.

They could have used any generic stoic character and it wouldn't have made ANY difference. Switch Dredd with John McClane from Die Hard, no difference at all.

"Good", "bad" are relative terms which are determined by one's personal taste.

Everyone enjoys different things. I'm simply giving my point of view of why I think Dredd 2012 was a failure. That's why I take the time to give arguments to support my view instead of simply saying "PIECE OF SHIT MOVIE SUCKS LOL" which is the level at which most internet discussion ends up at.

And just in case, I don't think Dredd 2012 failed because I saw "The Raid: Redemption" first, and I already know that Dredd was written before "The Raid", and that point has no bearing on my arguments any ways. I think Dredd fails because it's a below-par generic action film which wastes Dredd and 2000 AD's setting.

You wanna see some nicely choreographed action? "Universal Soldier: Regeneration". The action sequences are slow-mo-less, use a minimum of shaky-cam and the blood-mist of bullet/stab wounds is neat. Problem is the rest of the movie is an incoherent mess, but that's what the fast-forward button is for.

You enjoyed the movie, that's perfectly fine.

It reminded me of The Raid: Redemption on a way bigger scale. The villain, who also plays the queen in Game of Thrones, does a great job. I love how Dredd never took off his helmet during the entire movie. I am a big fan of that actor as well and we never see his face. I remember when he played Caesar on Xena Warrior Princess back in the day. It was a really good action flick and I would definitely recommend it.

I haven't seen it. I just want to inject that it would seem that a little bit of character development would make the action a lot better, no?

Compare "Transporter" movies to "Die Hard" movies - the difference is all in the sympathy for the character (and the level of credibility of the action of course...)

Speaking of which? Die Hard had the perfect balance of character and action and narrative... doesn't sound like the swap would make "no difference"...

Unless I'm reading you wrong...

When i watch movies action scenes are the most boring for me, I usually fast forward them till the next dialogue, or I just check my phone or whatever during action scenes. So whole movie of action would not, probably, be my type of movie

That movie actually had some style. Supposedly the slow-motion was the highest frame per second in film history. Get high and watch it, really mesmerizing. The movie was just a good example of lean, simple filmmaking.

What other movie besides the Matrix actually had a reason to do slo-mo that was inherent to the plot? It was to show the effect of the drug called "slo-mo".

Even though this movie is called Dredd, the rookie character he has to babysit is the central character. She's the one with the arc, and is a bystander to one of Dredd's routine days on the job. Watch it and you'll see.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It's definitely worth a watch though.

The new Total Recall is like that, not great, but its still good enough to watch.

It was all action, and well he did a better job then Stallone at playing the character properly. My gf watched it after I did, she liked it as well, but she was like "I spent the whole movie waiting for them to hook up" glad they didn't and it stuck to the comic book (in terms of the dude playing dredd) pretty well.

not exactly.... the Dredd slo-mo was shot at 4000 fps. in the 80's I worked with a camera shooting 25,000 fps on 'that's incredible... '

Good movie but it's very easy to make a good movie as long as you don't attach a lame hollywood love interest to the plot.

I agree with everything said in thread,if only was some more story outside building,on raid movie they at least had interesting turnover on end,and also scene with corrupted female cop sucked too how she immediately figured how she is corrupted without saying a word and killing her.

I don't know about the best movie, but it was a decent action movie.

I like that they have moved away from the bs of Arnie and Stallone and have created more darker characters in action flicks these days.

I enjoy the main actor (Karl Urban) in almost everything he's in.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0881631/

Some huge ones like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and he kicks ass playing "Bones" in the relaunched Star Trek movies.

DF if you liked Dredd check out Doom

Kind of sucked, bad story line was covered up by excessive blood spill.

Why? She read that female cop was going to shoot her and that was it.
