That's German engineering: Volkswagen to officially launch its 261 mpg car in April

Quote:
After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.

i know, 1L/100km makes also way more sense...

but alas, some people would have replied with "how much is that in mpg" ...

it's impressive tech but there's no reason to price this car at 6 figures. hell, the honda fit is ~35k and gets ~135 mpg. makes no sense to spend another 100,000$.

sends a mixed-message, vw certainly can't be trying to say that's a fairly calculated price.

So buy a 100k car with 74hp and get rear ending trying to achieve 60mph? Since my car does the 1/4 mile in the time that car takes to get 0-60. Ill pay for the gas over becoming a rolling road hazard thats for sure!

today i read they will only lease the first 50, not sell them

but it's surely not meant to be sold in the thousands, it's just supposed to show what technology can do if you really want

yeah, it's hand crafted, full of carbon, magnesium etc. since it still needs to be safe but super light

it appears there's nothing fancy about the drivetrain other than lightweight, entire car = 1800 lbs, the drag-coefficient is what's most impressive, .189 is insanely low, this car must be tiny eh, that's like less than 1/2 the drag of a 458.

so vw is accomplishing this primarily with very light weight and very minimal profile?

plus 2 cylinder Diesel plus battery for hybrid

i would love to find out how much it really takes on a 200-300 km trip when the battery is empty after 50 km

The Honda Fit doesn't even get 50 MPG. Not sure where you get a figure of 135 MPG from. There's not a single car in the US that does has those ratings.

Though I am happy get 55+ mpg in my Prius. Toyota has the best Hybrid technology, followed by Ford. NO ONE is getting 135 MPG.

Edit: The Honda Fit doesn't even get 30 MPG with 4 cyl and a manual transmission:

2013 Honda Fit 4 cyl, 1.5 L, Manual 5-spd, Regular Gasoline. 2013 Honda Fit, 27. City. 29.

Limited release. Very limited numbers. Limited to one state if I'm not mistaken. You can't even buy them, it's a lease program. And for your choice of colors, you get to pick from Blue and uh, blue.

They are doing this until 2015. IF it's a program that works, they may mass produce the vehicle. But as of now, it is not.

This is basically a test market for Honda and EVs. It's not a true retail vehicle.

The only Honda Fit available to the entire nation get's less than 30 mpg. You are right that Honda does make one, but it's a test just like the old GM EV1.

I think it's great. I like VWs but never bought one because they can't seem to keep the things from breaking down, and repairs are too much $$$. If they get a handle on the quality/reliability issue, I'll be down at the dealership. Always liked the GTI.

????? sooo, you're okay with them lobbying our government to overthrow other governments and bomb innocent people to control all that oil? granted, there's a definite need for petroleum products, but at what cost to the economy, the environment, and human lives???

Really man?

Many people seem to forget that most foreign 3/4-bangers produced between 75-100hp for many years before the engines became more powerful to appeal to North American's thirst for power in a smaller car. Take for example the 95 civic. 75 hp. And it was not a rolling road hazard. Most common people don't do 0-60 in 4 seconds.. 10-12 is fine for normal driving. Even my 91 golf had less power than that and kept up with on-ramp traffic no problem.

Take for example the 95 civic. 75 hp. And it was not a rolling road hazard. Most common people don't do 0-60 in 4 seconds.. 10-12 is fine for normal driving. Even my 91 golf had less power than that and kept up with on-ramp traffic no problem.
i figured it's useless to discuss that with a certain kind of people that think they need a V8 and 400 hp to drive 65 mp/h

That's not an engine in it though.

You're also not factoring in how much energy those batteries are taking from charging stations. It's no more efficient than their 35mpg gas model in terms of energy consumption. It just stores more energy than a gas vehicle could, thus goes further.

That's why there's not millions of electric vehicles on the road. It's not any more cost effective. There's been lawsuits against honda and chev already for false claims of being cheaper.

It's just old school thinking.

Look back in the 70's. Typical 3/4 ton pickup truck had 175'ish hp with a big block v8. Yet they still went fast enough and had enough power.

This whole "more power" phenomenon was created to sell more cars. Plain n simple. It's not needed.

next time, assume i know wtf i'm talking about instead of assuming i don't know wtf i'm talking about.

Wow.

So.. you discuss a subject posted, people discuss your comments, and because not everyone agrees with you, you throw a hissy?

You should have started your replies with this instead:
"if you don't agree with me, I want you to take no part in discussion because you need to assume I know what im talking about"

Fucking baby. Seriously. Whine whine whine. Sniff sniff

Want a fucking tissue?

my second car was a Jetta Diesel with 54 hp - it brought me from A to B and in Germany you have lots of highways with no speed limit.

i admit it wasnt always fun but do you need more power? No.

(i still prefer more hp though )

but thats not the point of this specific model.

Oh, for sure, Power is def fun Nothing quite like the feeling of being pushed back in your seat on acceleration.
