I have a land line because I know better than to rely on cellphones in an area that is prone to earthquakes. There are probably 5 people that call that number and the rest are telemarketers.

When I am bored I usually make up a story like I am a cop investigating the murder of Mr Brown, and make them reveal their relationship with the deceased, etc. It usually causes some stress for the telemarketer, but sometimes it is as much work for me to keep the story running. Recently, I have started telling the caller that I am currently masturbating and ask them to hold for a few minutes, and ask them to talk dirty to help me along.

The amazing thing is how many people will sit and wait before finally hanging up. The girl this morning said she could call me back in a few minutes if I'd like.

-play obscene music into the phone
-act like im retarded
-tell them im on welfare and eat dog food

same here, got a land line to open the front gate and that's about it... 40 calls a week +... all spam... I called the phone company, got on the do not call list, and unlisted... calls stopped almost immediately...also got a number for the phone company to trace the calls for the serious assholes..

What I like to do is act interested, go along with it, and once they get into recording, which they have to ask your permission, while in recording, that's basically a cue that it's sold and they start getting real excited... Here's the fun part, RIGHT BEFORE you commit to the purchase, say no thanks and hang up... They get so pissed because they can't do anything once a no has been said on recording as most companies will flag that sale as incomplete...

Really rustles their jimmies.

Lately I have been getting calls by some idiot offering to cut my interest rates on my credit cards in half. It's such an obvious scam done by over-anxious con artists. Sometimes I hang up on them but other times I will put them on speaker phone and say "uh huh" once in a while during their stupid pitch, and then pretend like I don't understand and make them repeat it all from the beginning.

What makes you think a land line is going to work in the event of an earthquake? In the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake here in San Fran we had no land lines for five days.

I worked at a group home for retarded adults. Somefuckinghow, one of the retarded guys ended up on a list, and the assholes would call and ask for him. The man in question was deaf and mute. Each time the telemarketers would call, I'd tell them they were calling a group home for impaired individuals, that the man they wanted to speak to was incapable of a phone conversation, and to kindly take the number off their list. They always apologized, and said they'd remove the number. Naturally, they never did. So when they'd call, I'd just hand the phone to one of the other residents - one who loooooved to talk.

"How are ya. Can I ask ya something? Me and Julie were wondering; are you Catholic by any chance? You'll never guess why. I have a meeting. With Region ten. I liked the coffee I had this morning. One of my buddies uses this technique. He screens all his calls with an answering machine that plays a recording from the phone company of a disconnected number. The recording starts with a certain 3 melody tone and it triggers the telemarketers autodialers to automatically remove his number from their databases.

Like you, I 've got a landline too. By landline, I'm referring to the old copper phone lines. Contrary to what some people may think, digital phone service or VOIP through a cable company or phone company isn't the same.

For the best chances that a landline will work after an earthquake, it's best to use a basic corded phone that doesn't have an AC adapter. A landline won't be of any use if there's no power and it's a cordless phone that needs to transmit from/to the base. Some landline phones with LED displays also won't work without power.

When I moved in, I got the cable package which included phone service. good thing as a few months later I started with an alarm service that requires a land line. Oddly they also installed a cell phone as a backup, in case the burglars cut the land line or the power goes out. It is on the battery backup.

I pay extra for an unlisted number, but that's a mixed blessing. Since the cable company can't divulge that I have the number, they didn't report a change in ownership to whatever company, Intelius I believe, that all the phone companies use as a central database for 411 purposes.

Since the ownership of the number never "changed" after 6 years, I still get calls for the previous owner, a woman who has a lot of bill collectors looking for her. I also get those robocalls about lower your credit card interest and bill collectors looking for other people I've never heard of. Or companies that say, "fuck the DNC list."

So to avoid that, the phone ringer is turned off. About once a day I erase the crap and return any phone calls to businesses or govt. agencies I gave the phone number to that I don't want them to know my cell number.

Leaving the generic "leave your name and number" is the only way. GF's psycho sister called after a couple of years and left a few messages. Since we didn't return the calls she couldn't be sure we still had the number and quickly gave up.

ATT might have been a better choice than cable. Recent snowstorm downed a lot of lines. My mom got next day service as she's elderly. Phoneman told me cable was telling people expect at least a week for repairs, theirs was just a couple of days.

Yeah, I had 20 years with the phone company, so I am quite prepared. And yeah, that includes a phone that does not need electricity to work.
