I use the galaxy nexus, my brother got the nexus 4 after selling him on that vs iphone. Great pure android phones especially for users of Google services, maps etc.

Pure android, I have rooted mine etc and get Google Over The Air updates but that was because it was purchased from a carrier. If you get a phone direct from Google it will be pure android and get 0-day updates.
If that is not available in your region you can use their images: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
