Oz The Great And Powerful

I went to see this movie in 3D today. It was totally awesome!

Great for all ages, but if you have kids you HAVE to take them - it would be child abuse not to!

A wonderful fairy tale, and a great diversion from real life...

Heard it was a good movie. I'll probably go to see it, but at times, I think a movie like this can destroy the original story.

I just watched it today with my wife and kids. We all enjoyed the movie and each others company for the day since we walked around in mall where we saw the movie when the show was over and strolled around a bit before the movie began.

I thought it started pretty slow but the last 1/3 where they take over the city had me on the edge of my seat. What a great ending.

On my list to see, Sam Raimi directed it, he did the Evil Dead stuff, so it could be good. Nice twist to the Oz story... Debating if I want to see it in theaters and 3D or wait until it comes out on DVD/Amazon Instant.

That's kind of how I feel about it. Knowing the original movie you try to compare it and the original just mops the floor with this one. They would have been better off to make this movie, call it something else, and not have a reference to Oz. As a stand alone movie I probably would have enjoyed it more.

The 3D was exceptional, and the movie had its own stand-alone plot. It was NOT a remake of The Wizard of Oz - it was much more of a prequel, than a remake.

No it wasn't, but it played off the first one and they poorly built the characters for this one. The wicked witches were poorly cast and her green face was too smooth and she looked a little chubby. She wasn't scary and neither were the monkeys. They could have really done her up like the evil witches in the recent Hansel & Gretel movie.

Oz was OK, it tells how he came to be. How he came up with the "Wizard" was good, but the wicked witches... eh... not convincing characters. Glenda the good witch was well played. The landscape and story also wasn't vast like the original. They had BIG shoes to fill trying to spin off the original and I just don't think they filled them. They could have done it better, that's all.

From what I read and heard, Warner Bros own the rights to the "Wizard of Oz", so the studio that produced "Oz The Great And Powerful" had a pile of things they were not allowed to reproduce, from songs, to red shoes, to rainbows, etc., so they were not trying to redo the original - they decided to settle for a prequel.

Not arguing, just saying...

Sam Raimi ain't a guarantee of anything these days.

Even less when it comes to do the movie puppet dance for Disney.

That makes sense as to why they left a lot of things out. I kept waiting for the ruby slippers to show up somewhere, or one someone humming one of the melodies from the old songs. They didn't even put the mole on the witches face, which I found odd but I'm guessing that was a legal issue too. So yea, if they had limits put on them it totally makes sense why it lacked as a solid prequel. It probably would have been much, much better if they were allowed to reference whatever they wanted. Though, I still didn't care for the casting of the witches. Rachel Weisz looked like a wicked Snow White and Mila Kunis was a poor choice for a witch.

14 books in the original story and this movie didn't follow any of them. The new movies will not tie into the old wizard of oz at all. They are a complete reworking,

It was ok.. hearing the people behind me eat their popcorn and candy like hogs was very distracting and most likely took a good movie to a ok movie. But I cant deal with all that fucking popcorn noise! It's not that hard to eat quietly.

I loved seeing all the Sam Raimi signature shots, Bruce Campbell and the old witch at the end...an obvious nod to Army of Darkness.

CGI sets and doing everything on green screen isn't something I'm a huge fan of, but how else do you do what they did here? I can live with it.
