I don't know the legal side of it but I know it's usually up to the registrar as to how long they "hold" the domain before allowing it to officially expire. I'm not sure if there is a max time limit or not.

They are not holding it before letting it expire, it doesn't expire. They renew it every year. It's their business model. |

Since you didn't renew it you lost ownership and whoever owns it is entitled to ask whatever he wants for it. It just happens its a subsidiary of enom, could've been anyone else.
Are you saying that registrars should be forbidden from registering domains after they're no longer renewed ? |

The buck starts and stops with you I'm afraid. Unless you have a trademark on the exact name in the domain, they can and will happily keep it if they feel it has value. That's one of the reasons why there's big money in being a registrar - most if not all of them keep some names that expire.

Lots of registrars make a lot of money on this scam, the shadier they are the more money they make. Some take the domain the second it expires, it is legal because they wait until drop.

You really only have yourself (and the domain of course) to blame for losing it.

This is a bad thread that is wrongly targeting a company for a perfectly legal AND ethical practice. When you let a domain expire, ANYBODY can register it including the registrar that holds the domain. They didn't take your name and they aren't holding it hostage. Not a customer but I think this thread seems to indicate a total lack of understanding how domains and expirations work. You are lucky somebody else didn't get it and already put it to use. You snoozed and you lost. Your fault, not eNoms.
The bottom line is that you don't have a right to things that you let expire. Sorry dude. It's really bad form to claim a scam when there is none. |

I understand you think domain snapping is both legal and ethical, I am not disagreeing with you. If the domain gets dropped anyone is free to register it, BUT... it's not the case here. No one could EVER snap it, because it was never actually released/"let go". |

I'm pretty sure every registrar will look at the traffic/profitability of any domain that is in redemption. If the numbers work and the registrant does not renew the domain they'll pick it up and park it and make money off the traffic. As for selling it back to you, you'll now have to pay what they think it is worth which will vary based on how much money it is making them.
Ethical? Fair? Maybe not, but you did have a chance to renew it. Legal? I'd bet it is.

yes, this is very bad practice, but everybody does it only if the domain is valuable.,
i let expire couple of shitty domains and they didnt renew it. but i let expire a good one and bam they making money from ads. this is what everybody is doing. but with namecheap at least they allow us to buyback the domain something like 70 bucks, i guess.

On moniker/name you can stil renew domain with normal renewal price after it expire, dont know for other registrars. But it was funny once when i let one domain to expire(dont remember on which registrar was that, probably godaddy),i got very fast offer for it on mail associated with same domain name but with net extension.Currently that domain is owned by hugedomains and they want 1300$ for it.But doubt they will ever sell because it's shitty name,it seems they think every 5 character domain worth more then 1000$.

This is a huge conflict of interest and one reason I won't touch enom. Yes, we are ultimately responsible for renewals, but accidents happen. These enom games could make it impossible to recover.

The registrar is required by Netsol or whoever to prepay for your expired domain upon expiry and is refunded upon deletion so technically they own it on expiry and are required to give you a period to renew.
