Overheard: "I'm cancelling all my memberships..."

I thought I'd throw this one out over here for everyone who is still left other than from the usual bro and rep club.

Quote:
Tonight at dinner a good friend of mine said something totally unsolicited and I think it's a really good thing to bring up here.

He said to me, "I think I'm going to just cancel the few memberships to the porn sites I have because whenever I go to a tube site they have all the full length videos there anyway.."

I explained to him that what he is seeing is stolen content that has been uploaded to tube sites and that this is not normally the owners of the sites he's paying for posting these videos.

Thanks for confirming that people still pay for porn in spite of tube sites. Or... Did he just learn about tube sites?

I don't know I'm only repeating the topic here. But for sure some people do still buy even when they know about tubes it's just that the number is reduced.

Weeeell the number one problem in the industry is piracy so what do you expect? The front page should be filled with these topics really. For what it's worth I don't think all tubes are bad. I think piracy is bad.

Aha. So all we need to do is focus on problems all day long? I think I like to live my life a little different, but I'm also pretty naive

The hairstylist of a good friend of my valet's cousin (twice removed) was overheard by the son of an assistant to my dog groomer as saying, "I still pay for porn online...even though there's so much for free out there."

So there you have it. Irrefutable conclusive proof.

You can take that to the bank.

It's interesting to compare and contrast the responses there versus the responses here. It's also interesting to note who the responses are coming from.

You should try clicking the link and reading. I'm not the one who posted the story. A sponsor did. And you're not who I had in mind when I made the topic.

You're usually one of the better ones. The problem is that with many reps they are being paid to look out for the interests of their employer and so that is what they do. Discussion yields to brown nosing and "sales talk". If you compare the reception this topic gets here as well as the quality of discussion versus over there it pretty much says it all.

GFY is filled with reps and people who scratch each other's backs all day. Then there are many "new affiliates" who are in the business for beer money and think getting 50 cents for 10,000 impressions on their free hosted tube is great. So they post here defending tubes in broken english while embedding content from Redtube in another tab. It's sad.

Instead of whining about tubes, it'd be far more productive to take what they do well, improve on what they do badly, and go from there.

And despite what many people think, tubes do quite a few important things badly.

It's just that many of the mom and pop sponsors here also do those things TERRIBLY, but they do a whole raft of other things shittily too. Not singling anyone out of course.

This is just a transition and it has less to do with 'free' than it does with the customer experience.

You aren't wrong, but I also see you complain about the same thing over and over again and you don't seem to want to take in input from others unless it is aligned with your beliefs. I can tell stories all day long about people doing bad, people doing good, people losing their house, people buying a mansion. The stories that we listen to tend to line up with how we feel about ourselves.

I have several affiliates doing well, I have several friends doing well, and I personally am an affiliate doing well. Last year was my best year ever and this year, frankly, is going to slaughter it.

There is still a stupid amount of money to be made. If you don't find a way to believe that, you will never find a way to get that money. It's out there. Go get it.

What input is this? Some rep telling me to leave a bro alone because they do $xx,xxx in business with him a month because they want to score some brownie points? That is exactly the kind of crap which allowed the industry to get to this point. It's meaningless to me.

I make money from adult but it's increasingly not from affiliate paysite sales. I started moving away from that in 2011 and really kicked it up in 2012. But it's frustrating to know that what I do have out there ought to be performing many times better than it is but does not primarily because of piracy.

Damn. I'm digging that quote, right there.

(Oh, FYI: myself and Sly have no invested monetary interest and while we are cool, I'm still not in the 'bro' club.)

Most people who get their content from tube sites do not even realize it is stolen. I have 2 friends who are exactly like this. One of them even downloads first-run movies, music, porn. When I confront him on it he says "But it's free! Everything on the Internet is free. What do you mean pirate? No, its free! Why should I pay for it when its free? What does copyright mean?"

Yes he's an idiot (for real); but it goes to show how un educated some people are when it comes to content theft. If he was caught and went to court, "but the website said it was free!" would be his defence.

I agree with you. Other industries at least have launched PR campaigns informing people that they need to BUY the content. But porn is so backwards. Instead now the big players in our industry actually PUBLISH the porn and tell the surfers it's all FREE. What else are they supposed to think?

My biggest business mistake was believing that collectively this industry could not be this stupid. I should have known better and I finally figured that out in 2011 that barring some sort of miracle (law change) it's never going to change.

There is nothing wrong with tubes. It's just piracy and knowingly encouraging it which is the problem in my opinion. You can even accept user uploads and be legitimate. But you have to have a good DMCA procedure and a fair repeat infringer policy in place. And you can't be paying people in the Philippines (or down on their luck GFYers who used to do $600 a month in the industry last year) to secretly upload content for you illegally.

I have a friend that told me about two years ago he stopped paying for porn. Up until then he had always had a membership to one site or another and he often would contact me and ask me for suggestions on which sites were cool and worth joining. About two years ago someone he worked with showed him Redtube and he told me there is no reason for him to ever pay for it again.

In your sig you also enable tube sites. To do whatever they want I guess.
Not picking on you personally. But these threads do usually turn into content owners pissed off and people who support tube business models telling us to shove it.

We all want to make a lot of money. There are some of us who just want to do it a bit more legally and with some sense of ethics. At least at the minimum level. You know, like Vegas.

Tube people I find are techies who can populate a town but they can't create a town.
Tube people are helping new laws slowly come into effect that will kill their business. No more free porn for you today...The noose is tightening on all of us thanks to tube people.

Go get it.
Well said!! The people that continue to bitch and moan should spend more time figuring out how to make money than complaining. As you said there is still a TON of money to be made.

The money is still there for people working in narrow niches. General porn is kind of dead.

Nor do they care.

I still don't see what his response was to the fact that tubes are stolen content. Did that make him think twice about unsubscribing?

Not picking on you personally. But these threads do usually turn into content owners pissed off and people who support tube business models telling us to shove it.

We all want to make a lot of money. There are some of us who just want to do it a bit more legally and with some sense of ethics. At least at the minimum level. You know, like Vegas.

Tube people I find are techies who can populate a town but they can't create a town.

No you can't do what you want, but I don't blame you for not reading the long ass terms We remove sites that infringe and follow US laws.

Also for the record, I'm a content owner myself as well as an operator of tubesites

Thats good news. I've always thought you were pretty damn good guy. I am trying to grapple with continuing a couple of tubes. I just feel weird developing a concept I do not like as a content owner.
