Too many fucking sequels, Can't established filmmakers make anything NEW?

I understand with HIT movies, the audience craves a sequel, but it's getting way out of hand. Even movies that suck have sequels or are being re made.

Movies are like tv series now.

In production or pre production (from IMDb)

Expendables 3
Pirates Caribbean 5
Terminator 5
Kill Bill 3
Prometheus 2 (Alien series, 1-4, so this makes 6)
Bad boys 3
Indiana Jones 5
Ghostbusters 3
Men in Black 4
Austin Powers 4
Zoolander 2
Rush Hour 4
Oz 2 !!!
Robocop re vamped.
Planet of the Apes, (ruined with cartoon monkeys)
Indepence Day II and III in the works...
Avatar II and III also.

Salt 2!!??? WFT??? Salt? really? Did anybody see that piece of utter crap?

I can't even name all the fucking Spiderman and Superman movies that have been shoved down kids throats in the last 10 years, they release one every 2 years.

just to name a few... there are dozens more coming.

Gutless filmmakers that used to have talent, now they have NO fucking balls to make something new, but rather sit back and crank out the same shit over and over and over again.

Sure, some of these movies are great, but why can't they leave it a that and make something new???

Do we need 5 Pirate movies?? 5??? the 2nd one sucked.

Indiana Jones 5??? Ford barely has enough left in him for Star Wars VII.

Kill Bill 3?? Didn't Uma kill Bill already?? nobody left to kill???

I gotta run, Rocky VI is on cable right now.

What do all of those movies have in common?

They made money. These days Hollywood is just like every other business. They find something that works and makes money and they drive it into the ground. As long as people buy tickets for these crappy movies they will keep making them.

Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty were both awesome, non-sequel movies from this (last) year.

I'm sure someone will argue that Zero Dark Thirty doesn't count cause it's based on true recent events or whatever, but cheers to Director Bigelow for making it. And also to Tarantino for Django... FUCKING AWESOME - I might go out on a limb and say it's my favorite Tarantino movie.

The audience has been dumbed down successfully. What makes money rules. Good "films" are an accident or a carrot for a director to make once he's made a pile of crap and a pile of money for the studios.

More and more good flicks will probably be made through places like kickstarter by dedicated film makers and their fans.

The Veronica Mars movie going into production this summer was funded this way in a matter of days by fans.

Why should Hollywood make any good movies today?
It will just be ridiculed by webkiddies that did not get their exact fantasy or asses kisseds and then stolen and put all over pirate sites.

I would watch almost all of those. Not sure why people get so upset about movies. I watch a movie for a little break from life. A laugh, a little excitement, every now and then something to get me thinking differently. There are plenty of movies that I have zero interest in… guess what? I don't watch them. ;-)

I have seen all of the movies in all the franchises you listed above and will probably see all of the sequels. Sequels make money so they will keep making them. There are lots of original movies every year. Very few are good enough to have sequels.

Most of the great movies made. Don't really need sequels. They are fine on there own.

I have to admit I would see these two. I loved Zoolander and it opened on 9/7/2001 I think, bad luck there.

I broke down and watched the remake of Red Dawn last week, wow, I wish I could have gotten every minute back

The funny thing is that most of the people who played characters still alive at the end in the first Independence Day really haven't aged that much. It's not quite as bad as reviving Indy when Ford is pushing 70 and trying to make Shia Labeouf any kind of a replacement young Indy. It wasn't a horrible movie if the first 3 were never made, but it certainly was given how good the first 3 were.

To answer the OP's original question as to whether or not established filmmakers could do something original, yes, they can. Some do and just choose to do it on smaller levels. Others can, but don't because it is hard to get funding for indy/original stuff and they don't want to use their own money to do this.

Take the Veronica Mars movie as an example. They decided they could do it if they raised at least 2 million dollars. Between Rob Thomas and Kristin Bell they could have easily written the check to make it happen, but they don't want to risk their own money. Don't get me wrong, I think the Kickstarter thing is cool because it allows people to actually back the projects they want to see made, but I'm sure if the were willing to plunk down their own money they could have gotten in made whenever they wanted.

Sometimes the sequels are as good (if not better) than the originals, though.

It's all subjective, of course...but Alien & Aliens were both really well done. The first two Terminator movies. Rocky I & II. Rambo 1 & 2. Godfather I & 2. IronMan 1 & 2 (although I liked the first one best). The first three Star Wars.

Just think what we'd have missed out on had they stopped at the originals.

But overall, I agree Hollywood churns out far too many bad sequels - often because they hire shitty directors and/or producers to do the sequels and spend little time developing the script and plot.

Sure, some of these movies are great, but why can't they leave it a that and make something new???
Expendables is laughable, that's why I like it. It's actually a funny action movie, and I like seeing a weird mash-up of some of my favourite actors.

Pirates 5, I've never been a fan of the series but I don't mind it.

Terminator 5, go ahead, I want to see an ending to the story.

Kill Bill 3, everyone has been killed? What about Lucy Liu's daughter? Could be the last of a trilogy.

Prometheus 2 (Alien series, 1-4, so this makes 6) Prometheus was interesting if not logical, I'd love to see another one.

Bad boys 3, Will Smith sucks, Martin Lawrence is hilarious, so could be interesting, I think the Bad Boys series is one of the most entertaining cop movies made in recent times.

Indiana Jones 5, not interested, not interest in 4, not interested in the first 3 either, just don't like them.

Ghostbusters 3, this one is pretty dumb, but perhaps todays children need a new one?

Men in Black 4, pretty lame movies and I myself do not see the point at all.

Austin Powers 4, they could make 20 of these and I'd still watch them, Mike Myers is hilarious in these movies, never liked him in anything, and I mean anything else.

Zoolander 2, never liked the first one.

Rush Hour 4, Jackie Chan and Tucker back together? Could be pretty hilarious, I miss Jackie Chan, he's funny as hell. I think I just like the comedy though, stories generally suck.

Oz 2 !!! No comment.

Robocop re vamped. could be interesting, I wasn't a huge fan.

Planet of the Apes, (ruined with cartoon monkeys) what?

Indepence Day II and III in the works... Will Smith again, blah.

Avatar II and III also, sounds good to me!

Speaking of which, 80% + ? maybe, of the movies you mention are pretty new stories, that probably haven't run their course.

I think all movies need a real ending or a sequel and a chunk of the above haven't finished yet. Look at Harry Potter, it was a series, it was original and was good.

Star wars isn't finished with yet either.

There have also been tons of fresh movies that have been great recently, I think maybe you just haven't been satisfied by anything recently for some reason or another, I get like that some times.

I read the problem is now is the movie industry is run by the marketing departments. Where in the 70's it wasnt and hence you got a string of amazing movies that never would of been made now.

It has nothing to do with the "established filmmakers". It has everything to do with what the studios will fund.

Incidentally not all sequels are bad! Aliens, Empire Strikes Back?

Very few sequels ever live up the original. Aliens is close.

There are still good movies being made. Not all great movies are 'blockbusters'.

how would they do a kill bill 3 exactly? Anyone else think they could have edited that hunk of shit down to one really good movie instead? That overrated coke head needs a fuckin editor badly..

In the case of Veronica Mars, the studio said they would give it the go ahead if they could raise the money and prove that there was interest. The $2 million raised was not for the movie, it will likely cost $40 million and come from the studio.

Right, I had read something this morning that was from Rob Cohen telling fans that since the studio still owned the rights they wanted to know that there was an actual interest in this project by fans and that the Kickstarter campaign had done that.

They could have found other ways to show fan interest, but nothing is better than being able to show the studio that fans are actually willing to pay to see the movie they want made.

Saw GI Joe tonight. Was as corny as the first one. Not sure wht they called it GI Joe 2, as it had nothing to do with the last one.
