Which version of Linux you guys use? Trying to get a graphics card to work on my Ubuntu 12.04 is driving me nuts.

Main Menu => System => Administration => Hardware Drivers

Check the video card manufacturer's website for its LINUX drivers?

I have Debian and Ubuntu workstations working fine with ATI chip vid cards.

Desktop - Linux Mint
For some reason slackware won as most popular desktop choice on linuxquestions,which i find totaly weird considering it's spartan version of linux like freebsd.Anyway,i suggest you to try linux mint as linux mint is based on ubuntu and it's not so buggy as ubuntu.

If Ubuntu fails Linux Mint would be a good and easy to use alternative. It has a more standard (I believe KDE) desktop, Ubuntu has a custom one. CentOS for secure servers, Debian for smaller servers built for speed.

I will give that a try. I have an Nvidia card. I get Xblink. Blinking windows in XWindows. Tried and APT GET UPDATE.

I also tried APT-GET INSTALL NVIDIA-CURRENT. This worked on my version I had on a thumb drive. But for some reason on my new install on my drive, I get an error when trying to get NVIDIA-CURRENT.

I may keep at it a while. Thanks for the input.

No guarantees I am afraid - If you just want to play with Linux you are better off using a virtual machine - That will defiantly work - http://www.traffictool.net/vmware/ is a good place to start...

Boot into your BIOS and check the graphics settings. Change it from Optimus to Discrete.

Fedora (due to its tie to Redhat) have very good support for GPU. That is one of the reasons I use it on some of my systems, where GPU acceleration is important.

But the Xubuntu is my favorit.
Its SO light, easy to use and quick. The interface is much better than Ununuts terrible Gnome3 GUI

Something like this: chmod a+rwx. Only engineers can understand this. And most engineers are still men. This puts the female population at a great disadvantage when applying for work. Men know this, and that's why they deliberately try to install linux in the workplace. How would women's groups react when they read the studies that are being commissioned by industry on this very subject? Surely, women, when they learn of this, will outvote men and ban linux from the government.
