WARNING: Buying Networks, Websites & Blogs

90% of the networks, websites and blogs for sale in the Buy/Sell were bitch slapped by Google and many sellers are trying to pull a fast one on buyers. Their revenue has nosedived and they're trying to cash out while they still can. Don't be a sucker! Revenue from the last 24 months, 12 months and even 6 months is IRRELEVANT. Ask for the last 30 days of VERIFIABLE revenue times it by 3 and don't pay a penny more. If they can't or are unwilling to verify revenue RUN!

Bottom line: BUYER BEWARE.

My last month revenue was 35% better then in previous month so it would be a mistake to follow your logic. ( I am not selling anything just my thought)

I would have assumed that before purchasing anything, be it an online asset or offline tangible asset, that due diligence would be a given. If not, it certainly should be.

ETA: I'd keep my sites and let them rot before I'd ever sell for some ridiculous lowball offer of 90 days revenue. I could sit on my ass, and let them all rot and still make money from them forever -- just turn them on auto pilot instead of keeping people employed to work on them daily. I'm not sure why anyone would sell off their assets for such a low amount.

I agree, the only good buys i have done so far are mostly from webmasters who are quitting the business or are moving to bigger things such as a big webshop or own affiliate program, and they want to remove the clutter from their servers/minds e.t.c.

When a normal webmaster sells a website for less than 12 months revenue, there will always be something fishy about the site.

Yep, absolutely, unless one was desperate for money. I'd leave my sites running, let them bring in sales, even if less than before, it all adds up.

Yea, I have a WL that holds very solid google rankings that made ~$1500 last month, no way I'd sell It for $4,5k.

Plus he speaks about google slapped sites, so lets say your site would be slapped to only 150$/month, it would be even more "no way" to sell for 450$, because then you at least won't be afraid not to earn those 450$ in next 3 months (its already been slapped so not much risk to be slapped again).

The sites that we've bought in the past 12 months were sites "not for sale", sites that one of the team found searching the web, we then approached the webmasters seeking to buy and in most of the cases, we cut the deal. It's become the best solution. Even if I have to say that in 4 years of buying up sites, we've never been ripped off once. It's common sense to check it's history first, you really don't need advice on this, if you get screwed over, its simply because you didn't do your homework properly.

Isn't revenue ONLY part of the equation?
Unless your are just trying to make a buck 3 months down the road.

What if Sex.com had no traffic?

Or say some Solo site had 50K Photos and 50 Videos and so on...

Anyway.....

It would be cool if the admins would verify sellers quality etc. like they do on other forums. prove ownership etc...

I think this idea has merit, but no longer possible since the board itself seems to have evolved to include more surfers and non-industry people, fake nicks, etc. As such, there are more page views than would likely be with a webmaster only forum. Thus, this board is advertising driven versus webmaster driven. Trying to validate everyone retroactively would be a huge task.

Personally, I'd have no issue with a requirement, even a monetary one, to qualify for a professional level Buy and Sell forum. As much due diligence as one can do, you can still be burned (I certainly have).

To that end, what we did was change all of our domain's whois information to public, which accurately reflects business address, phone number and also the email on all domains is the same address used on our payment accounts (Paypal, Paxum, Payoneer, etc). Thus, when people send money for advertising, links or whatever with us, a quick whois will show them they are purchasing services and sending payment to same address listed in public whois.

Having said that, I firmly believe anyone buying anything, online or off, should certainly exercise due diligence before sending payment to anyone.

One thing I often see is that a seller will include rebills when they tell you the sales, in some cases these will have been building for years, but the sale doesn't include the accounts, so they are keeping those rebills after the sale.

I know rebills do vary a lot by niche, but in my own niche they keep on accumulating, so another year of accumulated rebills makes a very nice difference.

Anyone in business seriously can tell you down to the penny what each click is worth on their sites. They can also tell you what the avg $$$/RAW and the avg $$$/Unique, what the avg sale is worth over any given period of time. I can tell you what any sponsor sale was worth to us, for example, in any month over the last decade. Understanding your traffic and the sponsors to the point of making educated decisions helps translate this information to a potential buyer.

For sure, I'm quite a stats man myself so I pay a lot of attention to these things. So when I see a site for sale that made $20,000 in the last year, of which rebills were $10,000, and those rebills had been building up for five years. I know that there's a big difference between buying that site 'with rebills' compared to 'without rebills', even more so if that site was doing $80,000 per year two or three years ago.

I've noticed that many sellers try to pitch the price as if rebills are included, even when they are not. A buyer like you or I would spot that, but some wouldn't.
