Anyone purchase a new laptop recently?
If so, what did you get? I may be getting one soon, and I really have no idea what to get, how much to spend on one, etc.
I pretty much only need to browse, a little Photochopping, FTP, email, etc. Nothing heavy, just my day-to-day work. Ideas?

i just got a samsung chromebook. for 250$ it works pretty well. obviously it doesn't compete with bigger, more expensive machines, but i think it is fine for "on the go" kinda stuff.

I'm also interested, I need something that has decent battery life and can run Photoshop well. So will be watching..
Personally, I've been looking at some of the Asus laptops but there are so many brands these days.. |

I got a really good deal on an HP G7 a few months back. It s nice. 17 inch screen, 4gig ram, 500gig HD, Blu Ray player. It does everything I need and I only paid about $350 for it.

For photoshop it's nice to have a bit more ram, I'd recommend 6gigs or more otherwise pretty much anything should work. I've had bad luck with Toshiba and HP, good luck with cheap Acer machines, Panasonic toughbooks and MacBooks...

Is there FTP and other programs what work with those. I think they look cool, but would I want to be able to run other software on them than just Google stuff.

If you want something Macbook Air like, but don't want to spend the money on overpriced Apple gear, Vizio has a nice looking laptop for $999 that has the specs of a $2500 Macbook.

I got a dell xps 15 i7 blah blah and it is a great (very powerful) laptop. Just one huge flaw - the screen is extremely poor.
Colours are washed out, there is a very faint grid across the entire screen almost as if the pixels do not fit the resolution. Sent it back to Dell, however they claim they could not see any problem. The techs had the audacity to ask me if I needed glasses. Great laptop, but would not recommend buying ever!

Check out Asus brand, usually a bit cheaper then others with the same specs and they are good machines.

Inspiron 17R Special Edition fully loaded for less than $1000, very happy with it, even if I have never owned a laptop that's lasted more than 18 months.

Macbook Pro. Hands down. You won't regret it. Grab one from the apple store in the refurb section.

Make sure screen is anti glare and not glossy, otherwise you would regret in well lit rooms and especially outdoors.
If you do not care about stylish designs HP probook is decent. Samsung has good matte screen models with better design than probook though. |

One good advice for you...
STAY AWAY FROM ASUS AND MSI! That is the shittiest HW you can buy these days. Had notebook, mainboard(s) and graphic cards from them in the past, experienced problems with all. Toshiba is always a good option. |

My current one is an ACER, i3 15" 4 gig DDR 640GB HDD, DVD, etc.
Does the job for sure, but I might be giving it to someone who needs it soon.
