A bomb goes off - what do you do?

1: Help the victims
2: Run away
3: Steal

None of the above. I would be the person behind the camera documenting the event. In the US, helping victims is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Well, i actually hope that's the case.
But why?
Hm maybe this is long after the incident and they can't get that stuff out of there because all the roads are blocked. They just tell people to grab some.

judging by how they are going about it all, those folks don't even look like they know there was a bomb explosion, let alone a terrorist event. that could have been miles from the end, or who knows where and when.

I was pretty close to one - About 100 meters - I stood there trying to take it in for about 10 seconds then ran to work - I was doing an agency shift in A&E, it was hard to know if I should get to work where I would be needed or try to help out on the ground - 18 hours later I went home, never worked so hard in my life...

I've been pretty lucky, in the area around London where I worked in the late 80's was bombed a lot but I was always on a day off or not around for some reason, having said that there was a bomb alert on a car not 20 feet from where I was standing once, false alarm but it could have gone another way.
People forget just how badly London (and the UK) was hit in the 70's-80's, every day was high alert - and most of the IRA funding came from the US. Oh, it was a funny joke then wasn't it when terrorism only affected other people!

Not so. Not too long ago, if you knew CPR, but were not currently certified, then it was possible to get named in a wrongful death suit if you performed CPR anyway and the person died. However, here in the states I believe some 'Good Samaritan' legislation was passed recently to limit this.

I remember taking note of it mainly because my own certification is not current.

I don't believe any threat of prosecution/lawsuit/whatever would ever prevent me from helping someone. Fear of physical harm might, but in case I 'got in trouble'? I'm sorry, that just wouldn't enter the equation on deciding whether to help another human. Nor would being told not to by anyone, because of any regulations (like the shameful incidences involving the emergency services here in the uk).

Remember the first video on the news? There was this old guy who buckled his legs and fell as soon as the blast went off. His defense mechanism kicked in within 0.2 seconds.

Don't forget the 90's... Wasn't as high alert as in the 80s but my office window blew in when the bomber on the bus accidentally set it off on the Strand. 97 if i remember well.

And you are shit spot on about the hypocrisy of the American attitude towards terrorism today.

"American funding of IRA terrorism" has always meant a small minority of American citizens making donations to groups whose usage of those funds for violent acts has never been proven (and is probably unproveable, which is not to say nonexistent). America itself (i.e., the US government) was in no way responsible for these donations.

Because they could never prove the link and because the IRA was only active prior to the War on Terror (and to an extent because of the influence of Irish-Americans), the US government did not violate its constitution by suppressing its citizens' right to donate their money to political causes they supported. It did, however, force the most prominent of these groups (Noraid) to register as an agent of the IRA. It also kept the groups' members/supporters under surveillance, harassed and arrested and prosecuted a couple of them on gun-running charges.

Not any more. The good Samaritan act that was passed stops people from being able to sue you for helping. Sadly it does NOT protect law enforcement or rescue guys from being sued.

Been around a couple of smaller homemade bombs. It depends on the situation as to what you do. In the case of when these photos were taken, all hell broke loose, a few small bombs went off at the same time the Thai ARMY opened fire from one end of the road on protestors and snipers started shooting at people from another direction from rooftops. Total chaos.

I got behind a large outdoor refrigerator that was outside a shop and under a small awning, and stayed there filming and photographing as much as I could. Then when I thought it was clear (after the sun went down) I stayed as close to objects as possible and slowly got out of the area, moving from one object to another to cover me. Gunfire in your direction adds a whole other element to bombs going off. People didn't know where to go at first because it was coming from all directions.

The power grid was shut off for this area so after the sun went down it was pitch black except for burning tires. The locals looted all the ATMs in the area.

Good times.

I said the Amerin attitude [toward terrorism]. Not Americans. Which was what rogueteens said, and i stand by it. Your govt and people turned a blind eye to the funding of terrorism because you were not affected by it. Period. Had that been today, the govt would have stopped it dead. Hence the hypocrisy.

you do realize that was ~35- 45 years ago right? might want to move on, we are at least 1 generation away from that time.

and it's misleading to say the american people turned a blind eye to this.

we have the same thing in canada, and probably common everywhere by now. Either way, no jury on the planet will rule against someone trying to save anothers life..

Many friends of mine are alive today ONLY because when Tower One and Tower Two were smoldering - while others stood their watching what was going on... they simply walked away from the event and got far away from the danger.

More or less. To this day the army denies firing live rounds on citizens but everyone there saw it with their own eyes and witnessed people getting shot by them in various places around the city. They even deny it after it was proven their bullets killed a Japanese reporter. Typical Thai denial, face saving nonsense. They also opened fire into a temple full of women and kids who were told the temple was a safety zone, killed a bunch of them, and to my knowledge no one has been held responsible yet and it has mostly been swept away. No one really knows who the snipers were working for but they were taking shots at anyone they could. I got pinned down a few times by them just trying to get from one area to another. It's very unnerving to have people shooting at you from rooftops. This was during the last incident where the "red shirts" took over parts of Bangkok.

Good times.
That is just awesome front line coverage and recounting. I'd be bricking it ! So much underhand shit goes on with govts that they get away it it's amazing. 3 weeks ago I proof read a manuscript of a French guy in Algeria that will form his memoires to be published and the shit the French did ther in the 50s/60s is just outragious. The Algerians are still waiting for an apology and Holland came as close as they'll get I think a few months ago.

Why does everyone insist on jumping on these silly bandwagons. They weren't stealing, they were officials handing out the jackets to runners that couldn't get to their stuff because of the chaos and needed something to put on after just completing 26 miles running. I happen to know this because my cousin Steve was about 150 yards away when it went off.

You guys will pretty much believe anything at this point, won't you....

i never suggested forgetting, but i am 48 years old and i have a hard time remembering the things you are bringing back up, i was ~8 years old then.

saying that is the american attitude is not correct, even for those times as there is much to suggest that 99% of americans had no idea that a few were doing that.

I'd probably freak out and run for cover as I haven't been in a bomb situation before

"A bomb goes off - what do you do?"

Well... pop up from behind the plywood, check if the tree is still standing, put out small fire, and start setting up the next one.

I'm not familiar with French history or terrorism. Can you shoot me some terms to google?

The first time that day I was taking direct fire I called my brother to let him know what was going on because I wasn't sure I was going to make it out or not and I at least wanted someone to know I was there and what was going on.

A person who isn't in the military never thinks the words "I'm pinned down by sniper fire" will ever come out of their mouth, so I too thought it was a little funny when I said it.

"A bomb goes off - what do you do?"

Step 1. - Watch a video about it.
Step 2. - Not have a damn clue about what's actually going on in the video clip.
Step 3. - Pretend like you do have a clue and you do know what's going on.
Step 4. - Post about it on webmaster forum.
