Photoshop and Dreamweaver will be a paid monthly subscription from next month

Adobe is introducing a subscription model for many of its most popular programs, including Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

Up to now, customers had perpetual access by paying a single fee for Adobe's Creative Suite.

From next month, continuing access to the programs, either individually or as a whole, will demand a monthly fee.

Standalone versions will still be available but will not be upgraded.

The change was announced at Adobe's annual Max conference, at which it details the latest updates to its products.

Adobe spokesman Scott Morris said the move to a subscription system would free the company from its traditional 18 to 24-month upgrade cycle. From June, he said, improvements would be released as they became available.

At Max, Adobe said the standalone version of its Creative Suite, which bundles together 16 programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition, Dreamweaver and Premiere, would be frozen at version 6. Bug fixes would be made available for this version but new features and enhancements would not. Currently, the standalone version of Creative Suite 6 costs about £1,800 from Adobe.

Those who want to keep up with upgrades and changes to Creative Suite would have to take out a subscription to Adobe's Creative Cloud - a web-based system through which customers can manage what they do with the different tools. In return, customers get access to the software as well as an online storage system and project management tools.

How old is this? I've been using PS, DW, and about 30 other CS6 products on a subscription for a while now. Awesome deal and be sure to say that you are a student for better prices ;)

How is it different than the Creative Cloud subscription? Costs me $32/month for basically all of their programs, no limitations.

just started Illustrator 6 subscription today and it looks amazing, same for InDesign.

I don't care for Photoshop, though. I know it's a very personal taste, but I still use CS2 because I HATE the CS3 and above canvas and work space, and quite honestly, I don't have an use for most of the bells and whistles. I have CS5 and it's way improved than CS3 and CS4, but I still prefer CS2.

Al the other 30 or whatever apps... I don't give a fuck

They're killing off Fireworks after CS6 too, which sucks.
PS is too bloated for web-use, FW is a great mix of vector/raster frames/pages etc, hate to see it go.

Just from reading this post (and not doing any research), it sounds like now it's COMPULSORY, and not an option anymore -- before, you could buy them. Sounds like you HAVE to do monthly now.

Good point.
They're probably pissed that around 85% of PS users use pirated versions, so they fixed that problem this way and at the same time allow more people to afford it.

recurring billing is the new business model. Why charge a one time fee when you charge someone for the rest of their life.... If I had to pay $25 a month for the version of PS I've been using.... That's $300 a year. Then factor in I've been using this bit of software for years... Do the math.

Then multiple times Dreamweaver. Cha-ching!

I (mostly) agree. You have to remember that Photoshop comes from a time when desktop publishing meant print publishing, so a whole lot of its features are simply wasted for web work.

Remember the abortion that was ImageReady?

Still, for raster image manipulation it's hard to beat.

I was afraid this would eventually happen when Adobe bought Macromedia back in the day. Macromedia's programs were designed from the ground-up to work for the web. They were simple, effective. Photoshop unfortunately has its print legacy to carry around.

As for the Cloud subscription, I'd suggest instead of going by hearsay and getting your collective panties in a bunch, do some research

Just pointing out that taking advantage of a student discount when not actually a student is only one step away from piracy. It still deprives the IP owner of the rightful revenue they should be able to determine in the free market.

I believe it does. It all comes down to the terms they set for the student discount. Since I'm not a student I don't know.

It's called "Software as a Service, AKA:'SaaS'

I guess this is Adobe's 'Piracy Tax' ...

So, now your graphics data will have the same security as your Google-Analytics data does
