It seems that not only porn is affected by too much free stuff

World of Warcraft is going down the drain because of the new free online multiplayer games that have emerged on the market.

I wouldn't call it "going down the drain" just because they are bleeding subscribers (primarily) on the asian market.

They still have something like 8M people paying them every single month. And all their games are selling like hot cakes.

Loosing 15-20% in 3 months is gong down the drain

No it isn't. It's a big loss, but they aren't going down the drain.

Its got nothing to do with free WOW started to struggle before they alllowed free users to play it. They did that in the hope to attract more players which by the looks of it has not worked. My son played it for years and now he has moved on to much newer games. Same as my younger brother. There are far better games out on the net now which are not only cheaper but some are completly free to play.

Look at Evony as an example, its free to play, yet it still continues to make money year after year.

None of the "free" online games are really free anyways. They wind up costing more than paying a monthly subscription.

Too bad you can't do something like that for porn: "click here to see the cumshot for .99 cents."

Arent most of these "free" games just making money with in-game sales or downloadable content?

WOW is one of those games that has been around so long you expect this. I don't know how much of it is free games and how much of it is WOW just getting stale.

If you have ever played these "free" games often they are pretty frustrating because to do much of anything cool you have to spend money anyway.

For me, the issue with WOW is that it is forever in between expansion packs and while they do add new stuff periodically between expansions, it isn't a whole lot so players get bored and move to something elese.

They have done a lot of stuff in the last few years to try to hold onto players and I think, considering the global economic meltdown, they have done a pretty good job. Are they what they once were? No. Could they be that big again? It is possible, but not likely, however, I think they might get some of them back for a limited time. They seem to ebb and flow. When the next expansion comes out they will likely see an influx of players returning to check it out.

With 8 million paying players they are still one of the biggest games in the world. I wouldn't say they are in a downward spiral just yet. If six months from now they have lost another 20%+ then I think it would be fair to say they are in trouble.
