Is Howard Stern Still Relevant?

I still love Howard - but I understand many of the criticisms of him, too. Curious what GFYers think.

I grew up in the tri state area, never ever listened to him. Just not my kind of entertainment.

I listen to him almost daily. He is only live 3 days a week now. I think he gets a bad rap. He is probably the greatest celebrity interviewer of all time. This week he had Rod Stewart, Roger Daltrey and ZZ Top played live. He also had Jimmy Kimmel on. Probably one of the best weeks. He asks people other shows wont, and he knows how to get them to answer. His whole show isnt dirty jokes and I think people who dont listen really think thats what it is. He talks politics, entertainment and about whatever is going on in current events. I think its also got a lot tamer with his older age as well.

Also, anyone who doesnt like him in this industry is crazy. He does a ton of the adult industry. He always has adult performers on. He has made a lot of girls careers and a lot of webmasters a bunch of money. Ask Mr Skin how that has worked out for them...

He can still move products too. A while back they had someone come on who had a new book out. The day the guy came on the show the book was ranked like #500 on the Amazon sales list. The day after is appearance it was #5.

I'm a twenty year plus listener and still listen to every Howard Stern radio show. I agree with those above who said he is the greatest interviewer ever. There's a lot of podcasts I like and options for entertainment nowadays. But Howard is one of a kind. His influence beyond his own radio and tv shows on the entertainment industry and how writers, directors, producers and actors write, talk and think cannot be exaggerated.

I just heard the Rod Stewart and Roger Daltry segments - Howard is actually a really good interviewer. I don't think he has the reach he did before, but definitely still relevant.

I was as big a Stern fan as anybody, he's a genius and a dope at the same time and he realizes it. When he left terrestrial radio I knew I wouldn't chase after him to satellite - I had a great run listening to him, have all the classic Channel 9 shows on VHS in a box. I got bored with the sophomoric stuff and uncomfortable with the exploitation of society's rejects like Hank and Beetlejuice. The true genius of Howard was turning his workplace into a live raw sitcom and drama - all my favorite Stern show memories are cast member based, Howard's relationship with Jackie and Gary the highlights for me. Fred, Howard and even Robin doing their Jackie impersonations, tears of laughter every day. Then the Jackie Puppet - Billy West was incredible, I was so bummed out when Billy left.

I had no idea Howard was only doing the radio show 3 days a week now. Probably a Beth O thing - hated when Howard split up from his wife.

He's still VERY relevant. I got some clients of mine on his show a few months ago. Their website traffic and sales went thru the roof.

Those were the gold old days. The gary puppet was even better then the jackie puppet. But truth is. Times change. Jackie was a moron for leaving. It basically ruined his career. Again, he exploits the wackpackers but at the same time he is very helpful to them. Do you think beetlejuice would be doing guest appearances for thousands of dollars if it wasnt for Stern? Sal & Richard who are both on the show now, and get paid to make prank phone calls and do interviews were just callers 10+ years ago. He gave them jobs. Most of the people who work on his show have worked there for years and years and started as interns. He is loyal to his employees and allows a lot of people to earn based on his name. Him doing 3 days a week has nothing to do with Beth, just more to do with his age having to wake up at 3 am for the last 30 years. He also has so much material to fill up the time. I personally like it on sattelite better because I can catch his shows and I dont have to be up at 6am. When he was on regular radio, if you missed something you would not be able to hear it again. His stuff now is way less of the sophomoric humor and much more great interviews. My girl hated him when I met her. We would listen in the car sometimes and one day Chris Martin of cold play was on. My girl happens to be a big fan and was so intrigued by his interview she couldn't get out of the car for work. This is because of Howard, not because of Chris Martin. The guy is a genius in the way he interviews people. And the comedy is funny too.

I love Stern and used to listen to him religiously but have to admit that I've stopped over the last few years. His show is kind of lame now without Artie. Every time I tune in it's him doing terrible long-winded impressions of his parents and snorting all the time. I still like the guy, don't get me wrong, but there's no denying that his show's gone downhill. He should have hired somebody to fill Jackie's chair.

Love him on AGT, though! New season June 4th and I can't wait!

he used to bully celebrities and other radio DJ's in order to be #1 in their markets. He made fun of Mancow when his father died of cancer. he slaughtered Mark n Brian to the point where they couldn't go anywhere without being booed.

But now Stern is crying that he's getting harassed on Twitter and on SternFanNetwork, the same thing he did to others. So I just think he's become the very thing he made fun of.

So you don't listen to the radio show but you do make time for that lame AGT show? Man that is so backwards! You won't find many bigger Stern fans than myself but other than watching a few episodes for curiosity last year when he first joined the cast, I couldn't care less about that boring and ponderous America's Got Talent while I never miss an episode of the radio show. PS- Almost everyone loves when Howard imitates his parents, lol.

AGT is an hour or two a week and, honestly, a lot more entertaining than his show on Sirius. I get my Stern fix that way now instead of listening to 9+ hours of his actual show. Trust me, it pains me to say that since I've been a huge, huge, huge Stern show for countless years and still am. I even subscribed to HowardTV for a while last year so I could just catch the show's best moments.

I don't understand why people love his impression of his parents so much. It'd be one thing if he only did it for, say, a minute or two but he often drags it on for ten or fifteen minutes.

I still say he should have found somebody to fill the Jackie/Artie chair.

(I listen to Carolla's free podcast now more than anything.)

We bought a new car that came with 3 months of satellite radio and I didn't even take the time to listen to his show when I could have done listens for free.

I don't get the guys, when he had a television show there were antics on the show with naked girls which will always get guys attention but I never really liked Howard or watched to listen to his opinions on anything.

Nights With Alice Cooper has long ago eclipsed Howard Stern's fame and stolen his fan base.

No it hasn't. I had to Google it just to realize that Alice Cooper even had a radio show. Nothing against Alice Cooper, but he can't have more than a tiny fraction of Howard's audience.

Sal and Richard's phoney phone calls are brilliant - Richard was just new to the show when Howard was leaving WXRK, he was a virgin and addicted to porn and I think some pornstar banged him?

I liked the playing with fire against the FCC and Tom - on satellite you can get away with anything, you lose that pushing the envelope danger that Howard had.

My Howard Stern claim to fame was I was responsible for Howard's most vicious Don Imus rant ever - most real angriest longest Howard rant ever period. He was out of his mind, threatening Imus and his family members, claiming he was ready to come out with shit against Imus, his daughter and god knows who else. It went on at least an hour.

What's the story behind Howard getting harassed on Twitter and SFN? They turned against him? Why?

Wow, both his parents are still alive? Must be a pact with the Devil, they have to be over 90. Not many people have both their parents alive at 60 - Howard's gotta be close to 60.

Crazy Cabbie ever return to the show after prison? Never hated anybody on the show more than that douche. What ever became of Stuttering John? And Grillo?

And most importantly, is Robin back in studio and how is she doing with her cancer?

Howard was making big money even when Jackie pulled his final holdout - Howard should have interceded and gave Jackie what he wanted out of his own pocket if need be.

Richard wasn't a virgin when he joined the show. He was just coming off a ten year span of no sexual contact while he was living in a storage unit in Florida and playing drums in death metal bands Death and Iced Earth.

That element was great, but it's not the only thing that makes Howard great imho.

There's a lot of haters who don't like the fact that he changed over the years and the anonymity of the internet allows a lot of trolling to go on.

He is very lucky to still have both parents alive at 59 years old.

Crazy Cabbie got banned from the show years ago for filming a porn movie with Ron Jeremy in Howard's old studio at K-Rock. Stuttering John was famously poached by Jay Leno years ago to be an announcer and later writer on his late night tv talk show, where he still works. Grillo nearly became an electrician but ended up tending bar and trying to be an actor which never really worked out.

And most importantly, is Robin back in studio and how is she doing with her cancer?
Robin does the show from home via ISDN still. They never discussed the nature of her illness, although it was heavily speculated she had cancer or another serious disease.

Howard was making big money even when Jackie pulled his final holdout - Howard should have interceded and gave Jackie what he wanted out of his own pocket if need be.
Well, that's up to Howard isn't it? Jackie needed Howard, not the other way around and Jackie didn't appreciate what he had at the Stern show. Besides, Artie wouldn't have worked there for a long while if Howard had continued to put up with Jackie's endless contract re-negotiations.

I listen to Opie and Anthony. They often talk on their show about how Howard is hardly ever there and on the air. He's there 3 days a week, if I'm to believe what they say.

I haven't listened to him in years, so I have no idea. My mom likes him on America's Got Talent, if that tells you anything.

As hardcore a Stern fan as I was I was never the kind of fan who blindly worshiped him, his enemies didn't automatically become my enemies. I am not a New York City guy, the lengths I've gone to to listen to Howard as he went in and out of markets were ridiculous, both pre and post Internet. He was on in Buffalo for a couple of years then without warning, gone. Then Toronto, another market conquered in another country, but it didn't last long, chased off the air and silenced by the powers that be. Radio has always been my favorite medium, so even though I'd never listened to these legendary American disc jockeys I knew their names. I knew the name Don Imus long before Howard's, his reputation as the top rock and roll disc jockey in NYC, but had never heard or seen him. When I began listening to Howard I was enthralled by the stories of the WNBC era, his vivid descriptions and impersonation of Imus as this pompous cokehead redneck racist drunken sleazy bully were amazing - nobody hates like Howard Stern. I was intrigued, you don't get to be the top rated dj in NYC without talent. Imus became a compelling figure to me, a man who achieved greatness brought down by a younger hungrier more talented man and his own personal demons, classic stuff. By the early 90's Howard was the king of morning radio, not just in NYC, across the country, achieving successes and fame that no radio disc jockey had dreamed of. And there was the once mighty superstar Imus, now doing a morning show on an all sports AM radio station, WFAN - a station who's morning drive ratings barely registered. And still it wasn't enough for Howard that Imus had been laid so low, he continued to humiliate Imus regularly on the air. Demonizing and ridiculing rival dj's was part of Howard's radio shtick, culminating in over the top public funerals when he slayed them. John Debella in Philadephia, the Greaseman in Washington, Mark and Brian in LA, Mancow in Chicago, Brother Weeze in upstate NY - they were all theater, part of the script. Imus was different, Howard truly seemed to hate the man to a pathological degree, he represented something much more to Howard. When Imus suffered a serious health setback, a lung collapse, Howard took to the air and mocked the frail sick old man, the sound of a ventilator machine playing behind his voice, wishing him dead. And I think he meant it, only Howard knows.

I finally got to listen to Imus with my own ears somewhere around that time. I have a SONY AM/FM clock radio that I received as a gift when I was 12, it's my most personal possession, it's older than probably half of the people who post here, 36 years old, works perfectly, it's a beautiful piece of design. It's right here beside me. To anybody under 40, AM radio doesn't even exist. The magical thing about AM radio is that at night radio waves bounce off the ionosphere and can carry a local radio signal very far from its original source. I'd listen to baseball and hockey games and top 40 radio from stations all across the American Midwest and Northeast. If you're under 40 this sounds stupid but for people over 40 we grew up in a world without cable TV, the world beyond your hometown was 3 network affiliate TV channels, 5 if you were Canadian, and a few local independent stations. So one early morning in the early 90's I decided to see if I could pick up WFAN while Imus was on the air. Moving the clock radio in different directions I finally found him, sounding exactly as Howard's impersonation of him, the garbling of a deep voice with a strange southern accent, mumbling and stumbling, frequent moments of awkward silence, you could easily imagine he was a drunk. And as I listened longer I confirmed what I always suspected, Imus was not without talent. You don't become the top morning show personality in New York City without it. I had no idea what the Imus show was about, it was on an all sports station so I assumed sports was a big part of it. It wasn't - I quickly realized that Imus had apparently reinvented himself as something of a political commentator, borrowing much from the Stern show, Imus in the Morning was a combination of a Sunday morning political pundit show and the Howard Stern show. He had his own ensemble similar to Howard's, Charles McCord was Robin, a sycophantic respectable news reader, Bernard McGurk was Jackie/Artie, a weasel who provided a lot of the bigoted and sexist humor, and Al Rosenberg a comedy writer who had worked on Howard's show. The call in guests were an impressive roster of big name political and news media personalities. When Imus would talk or interview a guest you could almost hear the voice in his head ask 'What would Howard do here, what would Howard say?'. I found the show entertaining and Imus to be exactly what Howard said he was.

So now I'd have Howard's show on my stereo system and for an hour until the sun rose I could check in on what Imus was talking about, at the same time. I don't know if the format of the Sirius show is any different but in the WXRK days the first hour was very mellow usually, probably my favorite hour of the show, that bluesy instrumental Tilt-a-Whirl theme song would come out of my speakers followed by 'Good morning everybody' and all was right with the world to me. I think the Imus show might have started at 5:30AM while Howard started at 6:00AM. I'm finally about to get to the part of the story where I instigated Howard's longest angriest rant ever.

When I first started listening to the Imus show, any time Howard's name came up in conversation and it did occassionally, Imus was fairly respectful, it was almost sad, he was Howard's bitch and he knew it. He didn't want to say anything that would incite Howard's wrath but he didn't want to look like Howard had totally emasculated him - he'd mumble things like 'yeah Howard's got some talent, never said he didn't, don't know what I ever did to him, he's a potty mouthed little boy' 'Howard's an obnoxious little jerk'. Gradually Imus became something of a big deal again, he had redeemed himself, he was now a sought after guest on political TV shows, politicians and news media personalities wanted to be on his show, inside the Beltway the I-Man was hip and cool.

I'm not sure what year this happened in, my guess is somewhere in 1995-1997, definitely before I was in this industry and before the Internet was widely used. I had a dial-up account with a small ISP that had started out as a BBS, 15 hours of Internet access a month. All I used the Internet for was reading and posting to newsgroups, the WWW was a barren landscape. One morning I was listening to the Imus show, and I am pretty sure it was in the 5:30-6:00AM time period when Imus had already begun and Howard hadn't yet started. Imus and his crew were discussing something, can't remember what exactly, perhaps a charity event in the city or a story in one of the newspapers but Alison Stern's name came up, Howard's wife. Imus' henchman Bernard jumped on it and made some insulting remark about Alison's looks. Imus now had a trophy wife, Diedre, a hot blonde who was at least 30 years younger than him. Alison Stern looked like your average 40 year old Jewish housewife on Long Island. Imus then joined in with McGurk and made a joke about Alison's looks. Laughter ensued among the Imus crew, more jokes or comments. My jaw dropped, Imus had dared 'to go there'. I had never heard anybody, including Howard's worst enemies, go there.

I can't remember if I used email or sent a fax but I had to tell Howard, I wrote out exactly what I had just heard on the Imus show and sent it off. Maybe 15 minutes later Howard came back from commercials and it began ...... 'So Robin I hear Imus is on the radio discussing my wife ...................' and didn't stop for at least an hour. It wasn't shtick, it was as real and personal as it comes, at times he was screaming, several times I thought the rant was over, he had said his piece, silence - and then he'd start up again. The most dramatic parts were these threats and references to dirt on Imus that Howard said he had never revealed before and he alluded to it having something to do with Imus' daughter from his first marriage. I remember thinking to myself that if Howard wasn't bluffing that Howard possibly had heard rumors or been told by a good source that Imus had molested his daughter.

Who knows, maybe other listeners also heard Imus and called or wrote in as well. I prefer to think I was the lone snitch that set off the fireworks.

Same here, I listen to Opie and Anthony and Ron and Fez every day. I used to love Stern back in the day, but every time I try and listen to his show now it just feels like his heart isn't in it. Can't blame him though, if I had $500 million plus in the bank my heart wouldn't be in work either.

SiriusXM does seem to be doing their best to kill the momentum of all their shows, Stern, O+A, and Ron and Fez included. When O+A and Ron and Fez were in the old XM studios the show was fucking incredible and you really never did know what might happen. After the takeover and the move to the combined studios the corporate environment that they shove down all the shows throats makes everyone sound like they are beaten down by management...

I've been listening to Opie and Anthony for the last few years, but I recently got him on my SiriusXM when I upgraded my package. I realized I really miss listening to Howard. I could listen to him talk all day... and there's some song parodies that people do about Robin's titties -- I laugh so fucking hard I almost have to pull the car over.

Relevant still? Nope.

Ron and Fez is the biggest waste of bandwidth. When Fez became an emotional wreck, I just couldn't tune in anymore.

Yeah...I don't get Ron and Fez. I listen, but mostly because I don't bother turning the channel.

and that's what Sirius is hoping. There's surely something better that could be on, but I'll bet Opie and Anthony has a lot to do with them having any airtime.

Yeah...I'm pretty sure they've got a big say in anything that airs on their channel. I know that O&A are basically subcontractors, and employ some of the staff themselves. While some (like Sam Roberts) are SiriusXM employees.

Once he leaves Sirius, he'll be entirely irrelevant.

I grew up in South Florida and listened to Ron Bennington back in the Ron and Ron days when he was on Zeta 94.9. I still think he is a fucking comedic genius and love listening to him. Fez used to also be hysterical back in the day but I agree his mental problems are grounding the show to a halt. I'm hoping he eventually retires and Ron moves either Chris Stanley or Eastside Dave into his spot.

As for why they are on the air it's pretty simple, they still have a shit ton of listeners. If you listen to the show the phones ring non stop. After Howard and O+A what other exclusive SiriusXM program has as many listeners as Ron and Fez do?

I like Chris Stanley, but Eastside Dave is a hugely entertaining trainwreck.

You have that backwards- Sirius needs Howard, not the other way around. Once Howard leaves Sirius, they'll lose a lot of their subscribers and eventually go out of business. Assuming he doesn't feel like semi-retiring and just doing a limited gig like America's Got Talent, Howard could always jump to a newer medium- most likely internet streaming/podcasting- and keep broadcasting that way to a receptive audience.
