$74 Billion In Revenue and Not A Penny Taxed

Apple has the loopholes all figured out.

Apple didn't pay taxes (to any country) on a whopping $74 billion over the past four years, after setting up a subsidiary in Ireland that controls its entire international operation.

Pretty typical for corporations such as this. And they are the ones pushing for small businesses to pay the "marketplace fairness" tax.

Retrofits of existing planes to address problems found in flight testing are expected to total $1.7 billion over the first 10 production batches, according to the most recent report by the congressional Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The cost of operating and sustaining the new planes is estimated to reach $1.1 trillion, assuming that they will be used for 50 years, according to the most recent Pentagon data provided to Congress."

Why the EU bailed out Ireland without demanding they stop their shady tax deals, I have no idea.

I think what's at issue, and I really don't understand it myself is this ?..

A foreign owned part of an international company has foreign factories, foreign employees, foreign customers, foreign sales, foreign profits, foreign bank accounts. Just why do they owe the taxes in the US?

And how much of the "US" stock price is based foreign deposits? I really don't know that much about this, I probably should but don't.

This is wrong. It should be pride forcing you to pay some tax to your country.
Of course you want to minimize where you can, and be smart about things. However, trying to pay nothing at all with huge profits is bullshit.

I'm not sure what you mean...

this is nothing more than than trying to find a scapegoat, last month it was the "rich", now it's the loopholes in the corporate tax system... when the real problem is that we are spending too much...

so somehow you manage to squeeze 35% tax out of apple, all sounds great except who owns apple stock? I would guess 90% is owned by the middle class with their 401ks, mutual funds, middle class apple fanboys who bought apple stock, etc... so if you tax apple 35%, it will really come out of middle class pocket, at best accomplishing nothing, but more likely actually leaving the middle class with less spending power...

spending too much is definitely a problem but isn't that just another scapegoat to excuse this behavior? i just don't get why the average person is expected to pay taxes when these financial behemoths aren't. so what if stocks take a dip? they'll go back up. businesses are expected to pay taxes. we shouldn't be treating them like gods.

Almost sounds like you are defending them.

Going by what you are saying, why should i pay my taxes then? More tax i pay, less i have to spend...

So long as they operated within the law (and I assume they did), good for them. Everyone should take advantage of any tax law they can to lower their tax burden, or even eliminate it if possible.

sounds good but all that does is leave the burden for the average worker who has no way to avoid paying taxes putting strain on consumer spending which drives the economy.

Apple is nothing.
74 billion? The U.S. govt. spends that in SEVEN DAYS.

The federal govt. spent 3.6 TRILLION dollars in 2012. And it's spending MORE in 2013 (don't let that "sequester" bullshit fool you)

Apple isn't doing anything wrong...it's the U.S. govt. that is the real "big business" monster.

It spends more than any company on Earth makes by a long shot. And every year the crooks in Washington figure out new ways to spend.

It makes nicking off a million here or 100 million there really easy when you are spending TRILLIONS of dollars.

Good for Apple. The money they didn't give to the U.S. is one less dollar for the govt. to send our military around the world killing people every day.

You got that right! Once they changed the constitution and added the 16th amendment in 1913 to make it "legal" to tax people on their income...it was just a matter of time until we ended up with a giant bloated govt. full of crooks "legally" stealing money.

pretty funny that people still don't realise the primary function of a business is to make money and they will do anything to do that.

It's easy to write off everything. Doesn't matter if you are a huge company or self employed. I write off a portion of my house because I work from home, although I'm not sure why I am allowed to do this? Why does anyone get to write off anything?

We need a flat tax.

you always say you 'write off' everything. i'd be curious to know what you actually write off and what percentages. i thought i was doing things right until i was audited.

He also said he and his g/f or wife write off breakfast everyday because they talk about work for 3 minutes. Don't trust anyone that isn't a CPA or been thru a major IRS audit for tax advise.

Perhaps people should strive to be better than the average worker and find their own tax loopholes.

Lets call it what it is, legalized theft.

That's exactly what it is.

They don't spend all that money on "building roads" or any of that horseshit that they use to justify things.

They spent 3.6 TRILLION dollars last year. Gonna spend MORE this year!

There shouldn't be one hungry or homeless person in the U.S. with that much money being spent.
Everybody should have solar panels on their homes and businesses with that much money being spent.

But where does it all go?
"Defense" contractors.
It's imperative that we spend hundreds of billions of dollars to have military bases all over the world.

We must protect Germany from...nothing. But yet there we are. 70 years AFTER WW2 ended.

It is exactly what you say: Legalized Theft.

And if this was a private company making even 1/100th of that much money...these fake liberals on GFY would be screaming for their heads.

But as long as it's the govt. TAKING that money from people...it's all good!

There will always be people in the summer heat digging ditches, breaking their backs, and paying the highest percentage of their earnings to the IRS, while their bosses sit in the shade, discuss golf, and pay considerably less. Unfair as that may be, that's life.

So what I'm saying is, it sucks to be a ditch digger.

<//////>~

the ditch digger. is he happy? i bet some are. many aren't, but some prolly fit right in with the simple life and know that they are born ditch diggers and so they do a good job and enjoy their place in the world.

+ being able to point at your accomplishment at the end of the day is nice.

some would prolly argue that a happy ditch digger is just ignorant of the apple corps in the world and that they are a *slave* to someone in what can appear to be a better postion in life but i'm not so sure.

i don't know what ditch diggers really have to do with anything, if you like extremes i guess its somewhere to go but anyone earning a salary or per hour wage is in the same boat as that ditch digger be it a half million salary or 10 buck per hour job. personally i think we're all in this 'tax hell' together and should be all be getting fucked to the same degree or do away with it completely.

Does anybody in the United States actually get a shovel and dig a ditch for a living?

I don't believe I've EVER seen that in real life anywhere in this country.

I have seen highly paid union guys with giant bulldozers digging ditches right here in Las Vegas (flood control). And I've seen highly paid guys with bulldozers digging ditches in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Mississippi, Alabama, and lots of other states I've lived in.

But NEVER saw a guy with a shovel digging a ditch and getting paid for it.

Cook testified at a hearing Tuesday by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which released a damning report Monday on Apple's tax practices.

"We pay all the taxes we owe ? every single dollar," Cook said. "We don't depend on tax gimmicks."
