Low down on jailbreaking/unlocking a iphone?

I want to use Straight Talk because they offer unlimited everything for $50/month and use Verizion's network if you use a iPhone, the draw back is you have to buy a phone out right.

I'm not gonna pay $600 for a fucking cell phone, but I've gone long enough with out a smartphone. I was gonna pick up a 4s off ebay or craigslist but I'm curious what happens if they are selling a phone that wasn't out of contract?

I see talk of bad ESN phones.. but what happens if you get one of those? Like say someone was on a contract but they didn't pay their bill, can that phone still be used on another network if it's jail broken or is the phone locked out?

How do you know you aren't getting fucked with a phone that can't be used? Anyone give me the run down on how you go about this, so I don't buy something that is worthless?

Jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things.

Yea I know unlocking isn't the same as jailbreaking.. I guess jailbreaking is more on the software app side of things.

I'm just trying to find out how I make sure I don't buy something that can't be used.

Buy a GSM phone from a legit source, not something sketchy, and pay $2.00 on ebay for an IMEI unlock. I never bothered to jailbreak because the few apps I use only cost a few dollars each, why bother is what I figured. Your other option is to software unlock which is also pretty easy but you have a chance to bricking the phone and I am not sure if you can do factory updates, probably not. IMEI unlock you can do updates with itunes and what not no problem.

I can't go with Tmobile as their network wont work for me. I'm going to be traveling around the country starting around Sept or Oct. I need to be on a major network like Verizon or ATT but I can't see paying $100+/month for Verizon or ATT, when I can get Straight Talk for $50/month and still be on Verizon's network.

I don't really like iPhones but I know they use Verizon's network when using them on Straight Talk. I'd go with a S3 but when used on Straight Talk they use Sprint's network from what I understand and Sprint just doesn't have good national coverage for data.

GSM would be Sprint Phones right? They can be used on the CDMA networks? Like buy a Sprint iPhone and use it on Verizon's network? Assuming it's unlocked..

Sprint >> http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...808206518.html

The AT&T version of the iPhone 5 has one feature Verizon and Sprint versions don't: It can make calls and connect to the Internet at the same time

In your opinion, jailbreaking is only useful for stealing apps? I've never used it for that purpose, and have found a ton of enjoyment in having a jailbroken device. If you jailbreak just to steal apps, prepare to be disappointed.

i'd be wary of that unlimited iphone deal

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2414418,00.asp

https://www.google.com/search?q=Stra...=1920&bih=1032

also, if you are going to be out on your own i'd recommend a very solid phone and contract with full support.

that phone will be your lifeline. i'm on att and just renewed, got the lg optimus g pro, and my bill is $80, after all the taxes and shit, which will be added to your $50. att also has cheaper plans.

you don't need unlimited data, let your phone find free wifi, it's becoming ubiquitous. and it appears that straight talk network is ~3g

You might be grandfathered in at that price because I've looked at both Verizon & ATT and both with data, my bill would be over $100/month.

nope, i just spend a good bit of time researching this, my contract expired and it was time for a new one and a new device.

either way, figured i'd let you know that smart talk unlimited is throttled at 2Mbs, your call. pun intended.

yup, just double-checked, att cheapest plan = $60 for my device, upping that to a 3Mbs data plan is $70

Yea, I know they were 3g and it really not unlimited data as it has a 2 gig soft cap. It's just with ATT & Verizion if I select unlimited talk and a data plan of around 2 gigs I end up over $100/month.

TBH, I don't intend to use the internet on the phone a lot so I can't see paying $100/month for that kind of package. The only advantage I could see would be that I could get the phone with out shelling out $600 bucks.. However at $100/month... That extra $50 buck is $600 year and I'd be stuck with 2 year contract so I'd be paying $1200 for that phone (not inciding the first $200)

For internet on my laptop/tablet I'm going to use millenicom's Hotspot set up.

Software unlocking IS NOT POSSIBLE on iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.3+ regardless of what multiple SCAMS online will tell you.

I have owned a brick and mortar computer/phone business for 5 years now, and unlocking phones is something I have plenty of experience with.

Depending on who subsidized the phone at the point of purchase, some carriers will perform an IEMI (permanent hardware) unlock for fees of $50-300, while other carriers (such as Bell Mobility) simply WILL NOT ALLOW UNLOCKING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

AT&T still seems the easiest phone to unlock, but you must be the registered owner of the phone on an AT&T plan - a measure to prevent unlocking stolen phones.

iPhone unlocking is not nearly as easy as it once was, so be sure to do your due diligence before you buy a locked phone, to make sure you do not end up with a jailbroken iPod Touch at the end of the day.

yes, and have an att app setup to always find and connect to wifi signals so i never come close to that max

i'm serious too about that phone being a lifeline while you are out on the road, i've been out in the middle of nowhere on motorcycles and all the info gathered by good solid device and connection saved my ass at least a couple times!

Just an FYI, I have had Tmobile for 12 years, and I have traveled extensively. Only ONE place did I not have service that others did. Small town in the mountains....

They use to show no Coverage in like New Orleans, But I had no problem the year we had a Convention there... Anyway...
Good Luck!
