:2cents The Little Secret Of The Concert Business

Quote:
You might think these concerts sell out so fast because of the high demand for tickets. But the profitable little secret of the concert business is just how small the supply of tickets actually is. In some cases, as little as seven percent of all tickets for an event go on sale to the general public.
Quote:
So, why are there so many pre-sales? It?s a business decision. Credit card, fan club and venue lists are valuable consumer data. It?s better to target potential ticket buyers who have the money and interest in a performer to guarantee the arena dates sell out.

That?s important for one major reason: Money.
Quote:
If this seems unfair to you, you?re not alone. Lawmakers in New York and New Jersey have put forth bills that would encourage more transparency about how many seats are actually available during public onsales.

Who the hell cares? Are there not more important issues we should be focusing on other than how many fucking concert tickets go on sale to the general public, especially in THIS economy where most people cant afford to put food on their kids plates, nevermind afford fucking concert tickets.

Even the worse pessimist wouldn't say that most people couldn't afford to put food on their kids plates in today's economy. That wasn't even true in the Great Depression of the late 1920s & 1930s. And in any case, what should we do- post no more threads in this forum at all until you think the economy gets better, lol?

I did not bother to click the links you attributed to Harmon, but in none of those examples attributed to me did I try to pretend that I was revealing some secret . . . and business was actually done as the result of one of them. 33% average . . . not bad.

The real money is in the products they sell... Concert t-shirts now go for what, $40, $50, $60? For a t-shirt that cost them a $1.99?

I had the chance to work at a concert a few years back, a volunteer thing for a local charity. I worked in the kitchen. Holy shit, they were selling cheeseburgers for $7 - And you should see how ghetto everything in the kitchen was!

I went to see Dark Star Orchestra at the Casino Ballroom (Hampton Beach) last weekend and it was an event worth any price, IMHO, and the closest you'll get to a real Grateful Dead show these days... Travel, hotel, meals and all don't matter when such an amazing experience can be had.

I almost never buy concert tickets from ticketmaster anymore. I get a much better deal buying from scalpers on the street. $100 buys me a floor ticket 10 rows or less from the stage most times.

My friend just got back from the festival in Ohio, traveled from Atlanta and had no regrets I was on vacation at the OBX or I would have been shaking my bones right beside them, money no object.

I would rather see DSO then all other covers, Furthur included. They bring the energy that built the power house we all remember, or just think we do, from times past!

So glad to see you and yours experienced A wonderful show They bring the magic, I can attest for at least the 5+ shows I have had the pleasure and luck to have seen.

Bottom line, tickets can be hard to get, with out any hype from promoters. I was lucky to see the Dead at Deercreek in '95, hardest ticket the whole tour, not because the promoters pulled some black hat shit, but because the band commanded that Kind of appreciation.

The guy is trying to make his well he can, fuck it. Want to see him, buy the ticket.
I just paid some sick money to catch Cohen before he decides to call it a day. I was happy to give, because he gave more than I paid, no question.

This is what http://www.tikly.co/ is solving. I watched the CEO Emma talk. She's friends with Dwolla's CEO Ben Milne, who I've watched talk as well.

Yeap, gotta make money.

May be true but I was in the 4th row of the Stones in 1981, paid less than $20. Of course it was general admission but still. All comes down to what people will pay, if idiots are going to pay $400 to watch 75 year old guys then more power to them.

LOL all the way around for this thread. Especially in an era where creative works are stolen more than any previous time in history nonetheless. I'm glad performers are banking with concerts. There needs to be SOME form of monetization to encourage creativity, entertainment and innovation.

If you don't want to pay the price for something entertainment based, then don't. Simplez.

Yap he forgot to QUOTE the whole paragraph

Quote:
That?s important for one major reason: Money. With declining record sales, concert tours are one of the few remaining places where artists can make a lot of cash. For example, Billboard magazine named Madonna music?s top-Moneymaker last year with earnings of more than $34 million dollars. More than 93-percent of that, an estimated $32 million, was made from her tour. Madonna?s tour was also the top-grossing of the year. By comparison, the physical and digital album sales portion of her earnings was estimated at just $1.5 million.

So nobody wants to pay the artists for their music, which means that the ONLY way that the vast majority of artists now make money is through concert ticket sales. Lets go ahead and take away that revenue stream from them also..... I'm sure that will work out just fine. Musicians should have to give away all their music AND their live performances for free!

Don't think anyone is saying that. However, when you have a band like the Rolling Stones charging $650 for a seat things are out of control. Why do you think they are not selling out this tour and having to drop ticket prices?

If you don't want to pay the price for something entertainment based, then don't. Simplez.
are the performers really the ones banking on reselling tickets by all these companies? i'd imagine no matter how high these phoney reseller companies mark up the prices the musicians still get the same no matter if its sold at base price or rip off retard price.

i used to buy tickets and resell them for a while. i could usually double my money but it got to be a bit of a pain in the ass and not worth the hassle. once i got some 4th row ac/dc tickets and sold them for triple the price. i foolishly thought the venue would be GA, not seated so i didn't see the need to keep those tickets when i had so many others. stupid stupid mistake as it was seated.

i don't mind paying "high" prices for concert tickets as long as its actually the musicians benefiting and not some random useless company who has deals with ticketmaster to hold back tickets. thats just bullshit.

That's horrible, business people selling in advance to qualified buyers who want their product instead of just trying to sell to unqualified buyers who may or may not have any money or interest in their product? they should be shot :D

You just answered your own question. If they price their tickets too high for the market, they won't sell them, and therefore they will make less money, thus forcing them to put ticket prices further down. Classic "Invisible hand of the free market" at work.

There's another factor in the mix. Older bands like the Rolling stones have older fans, and older fans have (a) much more money than younger fans, and (b) happily spend that money to enjoy the nostalgia. Maybe ticketmaster charges alot, but they sell a bazillion tickets and probably know the market and all kinds of metrics perfectly.
