Another Boring Sunday - I think I Am Going To Take Up Fishing Again...

I haven't been for ages - Also I was spoiled in New Zealand - It will be a shock to be catching tiddlers here - The fresh air is good though...

Its expensive as well - Anyone in the UK fancy going halves on a boat for a few days out of Bradwell?

New Zealand was amazing - I went salmon fishing 3 times - 5 salmon over twenty pounds to my name and one over 30...

Trout fishing once - 2 over 8 pounds - For most people in the UK that would be a lifetime best.....

Massive Hapuka as well - We couldn't weigh it - It broke the scales - Damn, I want to go back now...

^ You mustn't know many Kiwis, unless you're purely talking about geography. It's foreigners who think NZ is some kind of utopia after being suckered by the Middle Earth landscape.

You're in Oz, right? So even the guy who told you there's no reason to leave had left?

NZ is fantastic - Can get a bit claustrophobic after a while though for the younger crowd - I lasted 8 years - I expect I will be back to stay at some point...

I'm way to ADHD for fishing. I tried it when I was younger, can't really remember if I enjoyed it or I enjoyed playing in the river. I do know I gave up completely on fishing when I was 15 and my sisters boyfriend took me out for my birthday and I just sat there like "this is so fucking boring"

I am a lot of things - Hyperactive isn't one of them lol - I can stare at the water for hours - Sometimes actually catching a fish is a pain in the arse - You have to move...

Hubby fishes 3 times a week. I can't see the fun in sitting there for hours baiting, reeling and unhooking. Yuck! Boating or jet skiing yes - fishing NO!

What are the pros and cons living in NZ?

So far I've established

Pros

1) No income tax on foreign income revenue i.e. Internet Businesses (For first 4 years)
2) Small population Vs Size of the country - Also less immigration issues Vs EU etc
3) Incredible scenery!
4) Reasonable house prices - Although NZ don't appear to have had a property crash like in the West

Cons

1) Earthquakes, NZ sitting between tectonic plates
2) Low broadband speeds (although currently rolling out fiber atm)
3) Location - It's a good 600km away from anywhere!
4) High Import costs for most items

What other pros & cons are there?

What is the health care system like over in NZ? What about crime rates? How friendly are the people?

Yeah the only thing I have ever found to hold my attention long enough to sit still is this computer... I can sit here for 16 hours and not even notice... 10 minutes fishing? No thanks.

Healthcare is 'almost' free and very high standard - Better than the UK and anywhere else I have been in Europe...

I left in 2002 and we had ADSL2 broadband as far as I remember - I am sure you can do way better than that these days...

The earthquakes are generally small <4 - The big Christchurch one was a rare event - In some areas you get used to the constant rumbling - Its also fun when you have visitors and they run around screaming.....

Buying Asian imported goods is actually cheap - Cheap used cars from Japan for example are amazing value...

Property has gone up a LOT since I left - I keep half an eye on it and its been amazing.....

For someone that has seen what they want to see and just wants to settle down, NZ is paradise...

My last words of wisdom - Don't settle for the North Island just because it seems to have more going on and nicer weather - The South Island is SOOOO much better.....

Yeah the scenery in the South Island looks amazing, it seems a lot more remote but then you have places like Queenstown that just look spectacular!

That's the benefit of working online, as long as you have a decent connection you can live and work anywhere.

How is small population a 'pro'? You'd like to live in some boring, provincial backwater town where nothing happens? As for the scenery, are you really going to spend your time mountain climbing?

NZ has the same social problems and crime as everywhere else, gangs, murders, robberies, meth labs, whatever. On top of that it's (literally) in the middle of nowhere, insular, boring with crappy weather and crappy housing.

Just a few reasons why Kiwis who can leave do leave, often never to return.

You're simply not thinking straight if your main considerations for relocating to an entirely different country are internet speeds and how 'picture postcard' the view is.

I like the S. Island. I could live just about anywhere. Nelson is a nice mid-sized town with a hometown feel. But, so is Dunedin and Ivancargill. The southern end of the island seems to have a real winter and the fiordlands are spectacular. Getting residency is not all that easy these days. You have to have something they want (Capital, skills, formal education, etc.).

I was in Christchurch right after the earthquake. The old unreinforced buildings downtown were damaged; but, the surburbs were pretty much undamaged.

Depends what you're looking for though doesn't it and where you're from. NZ is the extreme sports capital of the world, Eddy as already mentioned NZ is fantastic for fishing compared to the UK.

So yeah if you enjoy extreme sports, love great scenery, fishing and anything outdoor related I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy living there!

NZ is similar to the UK in many ways, they have similar weather for one. They are a bigger country yet they have a population less than 1/10th the size of the UK.

Yea thanks for pointing out something I've clearly written down as a con in a previous post.

Well in comparison to the UK, it has a much stricter immigration policy. Isn't part of the EU and doesn't have to worry about millions of eastern europeans entering their country putting a drain on their health, education & benefit system along with driving down the working wage.

So yeah I'd consider that a potential plus point.

For anyone who works online, internet speed is always a major factor in any decision and if it's not then you're simply not thinking straight.

BTW it really really annoys me when people do this, you've quoted two of my points and twisted it to make it sound like I've announced to the world that I've decided to move to NZ based on internet speeds and beautiful scenery. I was simply trying to start a pro & con list hopefully with some input from people who have visited or lived there

My, you're right, the similarities never end.

The lack of population is one reason why the country is 1/100th as exciting and interesting as the UK, with about 1/100th of the things to do. That and the fact that it's in the middle of nowhe- oh, sorry, bro, you copyrighted that piece of trivia, didn't you? Nobody else is allowed to refer to it, without you crying.

Yawn. Another banal, xenophobic asswipe who wants to become an immigrant in another country (that he has no clue about), whining about immigrants in his own country.

Why do you care so much about the welfare system? I thought you 'worked' online?

How is a harsher, less-welcoming attitude towards immigrants (according to you) a potential plus point for a wannabe immigrant (hint: you)? Think you're someone special?

No it's not. Unless you have some weird idea that there are places in the world in 2013 with two cans and a string for internet. I've worked online since dialup without a problem, and visited numerous countries, including in the third world, and every single one of them, in the last decade, had broadband.

Stop crying, you fucking pansy. I've just given you some realistic information. I don't expect you to appreciate it, because it's obvious you're the kind of tool who, because you're clueless about the world and you swallow every stereotype you can find, won't listen to anything that doesn't fit what you want to believe.

And it's all academic anyway; I know for an absolute fact you will never, ever leave your own country, because if you were going to do it, you'd have already done it. You're the kind of bore who talks and talks about what he's going to do, or what he wants to do, but always finds a convenient excuse to never do it.

IMO

Open door policy = Bad
Restricted policy for highly skilled immigrants where there is a skills shortage = Good

But according to you that's Xenophobic

Canada, Australia, New Zealand to name a few have these policies but then according to you that makes those countries Xenophobic and racist. Of coarse I just consider that having a sensible immigration policy, but then that's just me

In most Asian countries the download speeds are piss poor compared to the west and the upload speeds are woefully inadequate. I'm happy for you that dialup and slow broadband is sufficient for whatever you're doing online for work but for the rest of us in the West i.e. EU & US we're used to having up to 100mb broadband with 10 - 20mb upload as a minimum.

You came into this thread looking for an argument, nothing more. That's my fault for replying, I should have just ignored you.

No what you did is repeat some of what I wrote above, threw in a bunch of general points that could apply to any country and then ridicule and mock what I had wrote when all I was doing was asking questions about NZ. You remind me of Franck

Learn to read, or get someone else to read to you. What's xenophobic is talking about millions of foreigners coming into your country 'draining' the welfare and education systems and creating low wages. Something that makes no sense, and which you have no evidence of, because it's nothing more than a xenophobic fantasy of yours.

It's typical of the common or garden variety total loser to blame other people for everything though.

Canada, Australia, New Zealand to name a few have these policies but then according to you that makes those countries Xenophobic and racist. Of coarse I just consider that having a sensible immigration policy, but then that's just me
Again: you are xenophobic, and again, I didn't say anything about you being a racist. If you struggle this much over basic English comprehension, good luck with your Visa.

In most Asian countries the download speeds are piss poor compared to the west and the upload speeds are woefully inadequate.

Dude you haven't even left your own country, let alone had any experience of another continent. Even so, I'm astounded that there's someone on the internet who is somehow unaware that Asia has absolutely trounced "the west" in internet speeds (and prices) for at least a decade. Here's a picture, since I know you have trouble with words:

Google the top three, because you obviously don't know where the fuck they are on a map.

I'm happy for you that dialup and slow broadband is sufficient for whatever you're doing online for work but for the rest of us in the West i.e. EU & US we're used to having up to 100mb broadband with 10 - 20mb upload as a minimum.

Man, thanks for the laughs. Seriously. Do you think you're talking to someone who hasn't been on the internet for about 20 years? Internet speeds are no secret. Average download speed in your country isn't even as high as the upload you claim people are "used to" there.

As for 100Mpbs... The Japanese have 2048 Mbps (2 Gbps) download (with 1Gbps up), and for just $50/month.

You came into this thread looking for an argument, nothing more. That's my fault for replying, I should have just ignored you.
Didn't I tell you to quit being such a pansy? If you're going to cry every time someone corrects the dumbass shit you post, you should find another hobby.

No what you did is repeat some of what I wrote above, threw in a bunch of general points that could apply to any country and then ridicule and mock what I had wrote when all I was doing was asking questions about NZ. You remind me of Franck
All I was doing was answering your post; I didn't repeat anything you wrote. You are absolutely clueless about every subject you have so far posted about in this thread. Don't start crying just because I'm trying to educate you.
