Dock Or Buy New Computer?

I want to have a desktop computer with a bigger screen.

Money isn't so much the issue, I just don't want to waste my laptop. I like the laptop and I'll be keeping it. I want a bigger screen and adjust for ergo though. I was wondering which route you would take?

1. Keep laptop, dock it into a 27" monitor via HDMI and hookup keyboard + mouse.
2. Keep laptop, build a desktop and have two computers, desktop w/ 27" screen.
3. Keep laptop, build a dual monitor desktop.

I've used dual monitors before and liked it but not sure how necessary it is these days with how easy it is to setup the screen on windows 7.

Laptop Specs:
- i7
- 8gb ram
- SSD hard drive

Worst fear would be the video card not adapting to the external monitor to its potential.

Thoughts?

In my office I have 2 laptops ( Macbook pro and an old HP win7 box ) that each have a 27 inch monitor, keyboard and mouse and it works great. Just installed Parallels for the MBP w/win7 to transition away from the HP as it is just not worth upgrading to another win box.

I have been looking at the Maxtor Dual head to go for running dual monitors when I needed more screen during crazy project times. Who would have thought that dual 27s is "not enough space" a few years back?

Docking the laptop is where its at and using a Monitor/keyboard/mouse ... This allows me to sit in my office all day and work, then de-deock and sit on my patio or wherever and have all my stuff.

Keep&dock the laptop and use its screen as a 2nd monitor (provided that this is for average use of browsing, email, spreadsheets, tasks, etc. and not intense creative work).
This way you'll have content that isn't saved in the cloud and settings the same at all times whether you are mobile or docked.

Keep the laptop, build/buy a desktop to use with dual or three displays.
