Blocking adblock users

Hi!

Is anyone currently blocking users who run Adblock plugins? (I know plugrush has some plugin you can use).

What are your experiences?

Most sites I run rely on advertising for monetization, so users blocking ads aren't generating any revenue for me.. But they are taking up server resources and bandwidth..

But on the other hand, they might contribute on a different level (share the site with friends, engage in social interaction, etc).

It seems AdBlockPlus also blocks links to some paysites (just closes the tab/window after you clicked a link).

So i'm not really sure what to do with them.. What's your thoughts on this?

I have a jQuery plugin that I wrote that detects if Adblock is being used and if so, allows you to display a message or even redirect the user.

Yes, i have the same.. i'm just not sure how to confront the user.. Redirect, limit pageviews, display message, beg to disable adblocker, etc.

So you block adblock users? Any idea how many users whitelisted your site or decided not to visit again?

I see some sites giving out warning messages and asking ADB users to disable it on the site, and that is pretty workable solution!

On those sites with ads - warning them first and redirecting them to a site that explains how to disable it. They would know that, though...

Plugrush has an adblock redirect script, So you can monetize your redirects. You can send the user to a warning page first or redirect to another site immediately.

Block people who visit your site to view the content of your site, not the million and 1 ads displayed on it (not saying yours specifically, but the primary reason for people using adblock is because so many damn sites now have more ads than actual content)... Sounds logical to me.

You say that sarcastically.. but the problem is most of the time is that adblock blocks galleries, gallery thumbnails, all links to affiliate programs, etc etc..

so the only content they will see is the videos and photos hosted on the same domain name.. (if the thumb is hosted there and the link goes to an offsite gallery, it most likely will not be displayed). If you have a tube, they'll view all the videos, with no link to the sponsor.. basically they drive up the bandwidth with no possibility whatsoever of making a sale.

What it blocks depends on what filter subscriptions you have running in it. ;)

I've only had that happen a handful of times. And to be honest, that really only happens when the sites you're hotlinking to have been submitted for spam and other such activity.

I'm running a couple of adblock plugins now, and it's crazy how much they block!

I managed to re-introduce some ads, even with the plugins active.. but it will probably be a cat & mouse game.. So right now i'm seriously thinking of blocking after 2 pageviews

Adblock plus is a sell out. They now allow ?acceptable ads?. I?m guessing the big guys (goggle, amazon, etc) are paying to have their ads allowed and the default enabled to allow such ads.

Why not try to get your porn ads allowed? https://adblockplus.org/en/acceptable-ads#criteria

How is it a sellout? It gives you the option to allow or not allow "some non-intrusive advertising". I take that to mean that it'll allow ads that aren't disrupting my browsing experience of the site(s) I'm visiting. The problem with ads now on most sites are they're usually bigger than the content itself. Otherwise known as spam ads in my book.

If a site spends more time focusing on their original content and less time trying to squeeze as many ads on their page as possible, then I don't mind the advertising... but most, do not do that.

And again, you have the option to disable it altogether if you so prefer.

It's a sellout because it comes enabled automatically. Let those that want to see ads enable it instead of the other way around. Those that want to see ads shouldn't even download it in the first damn place
