I was a heroin addict for 10+ years and I still occasionally go to NA meetings although I find it really tough to find ones I like around here. In fact I usually like the AA meetings better than NA but some AA groups don't want drug users that aren't there for alcohol in their meetings.

I drink a glass or two of wine before bed probably 3-4 days out of the week, dunno if that qualifies as alcoholism in any way. It's not because I need it - I just like trying all sorts of different wines.

What makes you say that? I don't drink right before going to sleep. I'll have that glass of wine while watching tv maybe 2-3 hours before bed. Sometimes it's wine, sometimes it's tea, sometimes it's nothing. I don't sleep better or worse after it, and I don't feel like I can't get through the evening without it - I just like trying different wines, just like I like trying different teas. I do it in the evening because I don't have to drive anywhere or do anything.

There's a distinct line between an addiction and enjoying something. If I had that one glass and next thing I knew the bottle was empty every time, then I'd maybe consider it a problem because it would be clear that once I start I can't stop . Brings up an interesting subject though - where do you draw the line between want and need with booze? My opinion is that the line when you stop drinking for taste and start drinking for effect.

And for me, it was the fact that I had no off button. If I'm having one pint, I'm carrying on until I physically can't have any more. Couple that fact in with the fact I loved drinking, which meant I did it every day for the nice buzz after 4 - 6, and it was a recipe for disaster - each and every time, I was sure that I'd just have 8 pints at most, and could never figure out why I never stopped at that amount, even though I truly meant it when I told myself that'd be the case that day.

Goes a bit more in-depth than that, but that's it in basic form

If one uses the term God within the USA he has to mean without any prior qualifications the JudeoChristian God Jehovah Yeeway (sp??) etc can't be anything else. Where the cult comes in, is the people of AA and NA denying that to get you into the cult and brainwash. Prefferably soon while you are weak from the ravages of addiction, esspecially alchohol your body and mind will be depleted enough that they know if they pull you in now, you are open to program more now than at any other time in your life. Hence the 90 meeting in 90 days. Also the AA success rate at only 3 months out is less than 1%. But they wil never mention that, AA has killed 100's of thousands of people by taking over and controlling the detox industial complex, and preventing science from entering into the equation and conversation. A huge massive class action lawsuit needs to be brought against them to stop this, but people in the US love religion and cults unfortunetly.

Anyway, it might be different in the UK

yeah, all that put me right off the first time I went, which was about 17 years ago, was only when I went back this time round that I realised none of the uses of the word god meant the traditional sense of some bloke in the sky. But I do hear you, especially if they bang on over there that yes, it's mr white beard man. I couldn't be dealing with all that shit lol.

I had blood alchohol levels of over 500 and was in acute withdrwal lol and they had to shoot me up on ativan to keep me from seizing :D thats an alcoholic lol... fuck knows what my levels were when i felt ok or was drunk :D

actually, there is nothing in the big book about attending meetings. and aa is the big book. the meeting were added so drunks can get together and share strength through story telling.

Well, for me personally, the meetings got me sober, not the 12 steps (even though I eventually went through them). Though I was led to believe, and I could be wrong of course, that the big book wasn't written until later, after the meetings had already started?

I find the meetings way more relaxed (again maybe that's just over here), and big book bashers as a bit 'Taliban' imo. Though horses for courses, different strokes for different folks and all that of course

i've forgotten that part of the aa history, but as my last sponsor way back when used to ask me when i got back from a meeting, "how much step work did ya get done at the meeting tonite?" hahahahha.

and it's true here as well, most people in aa sober up and not do any real step work. it's super you have worked all the steps, we used to figure about 90% in our area did not.

i always enjoyed going to meetings, i liked the comraderie a lot, it's always nice being around people that are like yourself, know that and can be that.

"clean" in the recovery world generally refers to drugs. "sober" is for booze

I was an equal opportunity drug addict. what ever was around I was doing. But the mainstay was coke and KGB.
