Been doing this since the mid 90's and the past couple weeks has got to be a record breaker for us for shitty sales (iBill fiasco not included)..

Across the board on everything: Affiliate programs, clip stores, hard1ink sales, blog posts, you name it. Traffic and bandwidth are the same, just ratios suck.

And as if spending countless hours removing content from dozens of dead programs from sites wasn't bad enough, I keep getting Indian dudes who haggle with me forever wanting blog posts for a quarter and for me to write them, or they want permanent 1inks for 25 cents. The sad thing is, even though I know better, I waste an hour trying to get a reasonable price from them and in the end nada...

That shotgun I bought for December 21st, 2012 is looking absolutely delicious right now….. if only I could find some steak sauce.

It sounds like you know better than to waste time haggling with people who want links for a quarter so why are you doing it man?

Don't put up another affiliate link ever again until you have a way to remove it and all others like it within five minutes. I don't worry about the content too much. If someone doesn't pay me or they close their program with little or no notice then it'll get removed when I have the time.

It does suck all this labor for dwindling returns. This is why I'm extremely hesitant to promote new sites and commit my time to it. Especially Nats programs. "Here today, gone tomorrow" is all too common and I think it's only going to get worse. Within three years I expect almost every affiliate paysite program to disappear. To make matters worse most now shutdown with little or no notice or they sell silently to someone who changes the codes without so much as notifying us. There is so little respect for affiliates these days. Who needs that? If the program brings $$$$ a month that's one thing. If it's $$ that's another.

You can get some cash by ranking for Google but the product itself is rapidly being devalued. In some cases you can't even give the porn away. People don't want it. They are sick of it. This is where we are at now and where we are going.

These guys will suffer too as the $/visitor falls to zero and the competition for finite traffic increases. It's a mathematical certainty. I believe some are starting to notice this in the last year especially. You can see the panic.

Free samples are one thing. When I go to the grocery store someone might offer me a bite on a stick or something as a free sample. None of them give me a year's supply of the product. But that is what is happening in our industry and has been happening for years. Go to any major tube and you can get more porn for free than you could ever hope to watch. The customers are overwhelmed. There is no need to ever buy again. In fact so much free porn is available they can now be very discriminating about what they will spend time watching for free! It's crazy.

It is pretty mind-boggling. Even going back 3-4 years ago you were somewhat limited as to what you could find on the tubes. Generic mainstream porn was easy & abundant, but many of the more specific niches the surfers' options were limited. Not so anymore. In 30 seconds of searching a surfer can bring up hundreds of full-length vids in nearly any category they can think of, enough to keep them masturbating 3x/day for years. It's comical. That's what happens when programs give affiliates a neverending stream of "promo" content and then they saturate the Web with it by the millions for a decade-plus, using the "throw enough shit against the wall & some will stick" marketing strategy.

It was the affiliate model that built online adult up and it's the affiliate model that killed it.

I still believe you can sell effectively to the true aficionados of certain micro-niches, the rare people who will indeed pay for the content they love and even perhaps develop a loyalty toward your brand. But those people are .001% of the original porn-buying customers, so the pie is tiny & getting smaller by the month. And reaching that audience takes a lot of work.

I can tell you understand the situation with niche and micro-niche as well. It's a relatively small amount of surfers and once you start handing out content for free in great numbers it can totally change the viability of the market.

I admit it was a rough lesson for me. At first I thought that niche and especially micro-niche would be largely immune to the piracy. I figured that the tubes would keep their focus on the mainstream markets. I did not think micro-niche sponsors would tolerate them. But little did I know it's even more vulnerable due to the above. You cannot make it up on volume when in a micro-niche. It's impossible because the interested surfers just aren't there. Once the sponsors in the micro-niches got hit with reduced revenues they mostly turned to the tubes in desperation further accelerating the problem.

Admittedly I think affiliates didn't help matters either. I know in the past if you managed to find a micro-niche where little or no affiliate or other content exists while also finding the right target demographic you could get very, very, very rich in a short time. This was true as little as five years ago. There was a lto of opportunity still with paysites and even as an affiliate.

But I don't believe the affiliates of old are so much responsible for this mess we see now. Most of these giant tubes were started and financed by the large players in our industry. Often it was done secretly. For instance look at Brazzers. For the most part the affiliates of old hated it. I know I've been rallying against it for at least five years. We knew it would decimate the paysite affiliate model and that was how most of us made our living. We also suspected it would hurt paysites in the long term as well. We were right sadly.

The people who mainly dropped the ball in this industry are those at the top. They did not think long term. They were greedy and stupid. They took short term profits. But that used to be how most business was done. It was a frat boy type atmosphere with hookers and blow where most people at the top had little real business education.

Dating and cams can still sell if you are able to find a sponsor who will give you a fair shake (and that's the tough part). It's easier than selling 99% of paysites anyway under current conditions. The rebills are better too and that at least allows you a chance to build back up instead of building on shifting sands and getting nowhere. Other than that it's suicide to try anything else as an affiliate other than cpm or selling ad space for flat rates. It's that bad. Thankfully there is no law which says we have to stay in adult either.

1. Try to get traffic which you already know is interested in cams and wants to see it. This is up to you but there are tricks. Remember you have a better shot here and you don't need to throw thousands of people at the problem as you do now with paysites (200,000 affiliate impressions for a sale). Sometimes filtering works great.

2. Try to make them fall in love with a particular girl (or guy) and then helpfully toss them the DIRECT link to click see more. They can't pirate it so you have a good shot at a sale if the sponsor is fair.

Tossing up a general promo in the sidebar on a blog mainly designed to sell paysites just isn't going to work. You're going to see 0.3% ctr and 1:30000 from that. Work on pushing the cams or dating primarily right from the start!

Really fuck the paysite stuff. It's dead and buried. I think that is important to do. I know it's hard to do after living off of it for so long but things have changed so much. The sooner you do that I think the better off you will be. If you already have stuff up then that's fine but I wouldn't work on building it up any further. It's largely a waste of time.

Around this time last year, I bit the bullet and got a job. I felt terrible about it, and I thought it wouldn't last.. or that I wouldn't last. I made a thread about it here. It was a HUGE life decision for me.. I was probably more stubborn than most of you holdouts to be honest.. I held on way too long.

But a year later I'm still at the new job, I make $40/hr to go to meetings and manage some projects part time. I've met so many new people, gained confidence, and realize there's so much more out there.

Also I've used tons of the things I learned over the years running my sites at my new job, and I'm learning so much more that I would have never learned if I just kept looking at porn all day.

I've new side projects of my own coming up, I'm outsourcing instead of doing everything myself so I can scale, and I'm a partner in a new business with 2 multimillionaires.

All in a year.

The best part is that people look up to me now, instead of just me looking down on myself.

I haven't really touched my adult stuff for a while now, and I don't even feel it's worth paying someone to update them to be honest.. Diminishing returns, and the worst part - no motivation... No pot of gold at the end of the tunnel. Low expected value. That was just too depressing for me to put in an honest day's work towards.
