Yes, I'm aware this is an Adult Webmaster board. Being a member of GFY for a few years has made that clear. I came here when I worked for an adult firm in 2002

What I promote is what makes the most money for the effort: That today happens to be for me in Mainstream IT Consulting. If your going to put in the hours - maximize your revenue

Why I come here now: I enjoy reading the banter of fellow business folks that only GFY can provide. The personalities of the people ( real people and the legendary fake board personas) while having a discussion is similar to friends you've known for years hanging out breaking balls, calling bullshit, and celebrating with pics of how they are rollin' livin' and stylin' ... talking music, where they are hanging out now, living at, fucking, etc.

There are also the sad posts when a member of the community leaves this world (Quiet ) that makes it all real that someone you never met, talked to, did business with, and only really read about - you miss.

While I may not have met anyone in person or actively engaged in conversations, I have spent quite a bit of time hanging out with you all. And it has been enjoyable to be part of a community for just about 10 years.

It's one of the few times I've ever done that so it was good for both of us. LOL

I have a friend who began in IT Consulting. He worked on software for companies that ran payroll. SO BORING I would shoot my own head off if that were MY job - but now he's married, has a kid and is making $300k a year. Meanwhile, I whine about sales, my bitchy girlfriend and my overall lack of fun this summer while he goes on a nice 3 week vacation. Sigh.

But at least I work for an asshole (me) so that's okay. LOL!! Continued good fortune.

How much money are YOU making from that though? You say we so i assume there is more than just you involved. some people like to talk a big game about 'mainstream' when really they are just working for a company.

That is my compensation personally after everything/everyone is paid for by my deals.

We have been together for 7 years with the current team of Engineering and Operational folks. Total crew is 12 people. All are 10-20 year vets in the IT field.

Our goal is simple: Stellar customer support before, during and after the sale which cements relationships as a trusted advisor. Real consulting, not just bullshit sales huckstering.

CIO's and VPs of IT move their jobs every few years I have seen. When you have done multiple successful engagements for these folks - They are calling you 1st, which allows for deal control, what partners are getting calls and what reps are in or out altogether.

Companies spend ALOT on IT consulting. The trick is to get them to spend it with you

sounds pretty cool. how did you get into that if you don't mind me asking? the reason i ask is because most guys who do affiliate marketing typically don't have degrees in IT consulting..or do you even need one?

Here is how:

In the mid 90s I had a friend that needed a sales guy for his local tiny IT Dial up ISP. I needed to make some cash so took a job selling dial up accounts from inbound callers for $5 a sale. Figured I'd made $200 a week as a bill collector before this gig, I maybe could make $50 extra on the side.

Day1: I made $205 in commission from inbound sales. Not bad for a 21 year old kid with no technical background. All they gave me was a 1 pager with features to say: its 56k, has 10mb of a personal web page, 5 email accounts, blah blah blah ... I went full time.

2000: Got into corporate IT sales hustling IP services (pipes: T1, T3, GigE) and saw the guys that made the paper are the "integrators" ..spent the next 6 years really learning about Networking, routers, switches, SANs, Data Centers, etc ... All from people that worked in them and asking a fuckload of questions. Reading on the Internet at night to learn more and more ... reading books.

From 2000 to early 2006: I worked selling ISP services ( Hosting, colocation, Dedicated servers, IP transit and transport ) and all these Technology jobs figured that give the sales reps Engineering training so they can learn this. Most did not, I ate it up. Took more and more classes online, asked more questions, got into more deals ... studied my ass off.

I also had some adult projects, and just worked my ass off trying everything in adult to make some paper at night/part time. Learned tons, did not make much but met some very smart people and asked a fuckload more questions

2006: Went into being a VAR (Value Added Reseller) for Cisco/Netapp/VMware/AT&T with the team I have today 7 years later. At this point, I studied all the Cisco/Netapp/VMware/AT&T classes that are offered for their partner sales reps and their sales engineers...

I also build computers for fun and just enjoy the web and all it has to offer. I learned everything from people handing it down to me and just reading on line as well alot of books combined with a desire to make a few hundred grand a year.

... I have no college degree. Only High School ... I do all from my home.. out of my office looking out over a 20 acre farm. All because I believe in me.

Thanks for the advice, I think it actually worked because I made a 3 killer sales since then.. enough to pay hosting, truck payment, mortgage, and car insurance, domain name renewals with a little spare change left.. I was at the end of my rope and got lucky...

What is really upsetting is years ago, if I wanted some money it was easy as hell.. getting a couple thousand a day was no problem at all. I had told my wife that it would not last forever, but I did not think it would change so abruptly.. Now I work 5x as hard for 1/4 of what we used to make.

I've had over 200 mainstream sites forever, but never did much with them.. I got them in preparation for any unforeseen issues with adult business having trouble so I would have an alternate source of income to balance things out. The problem was things were so good with adult that doing anything with them kept on getting put off, and put off, because I was too greedy living in the moment instead of thinking about the future.. I do really need to work on them and I am kicking myself now that I didn't focus on them more when I had the time and money.

I know.. the best thing I can compare it to is when you watch a movie that has good actors, but the movie completely sucks ass.... you keep watching thinking it has to get better, but it never does, and before you know it the movie is over and you feel ripped off.. lol.. i.e.: Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts in “Larry Crowne”.

I've been slowly moving towards that goal, but we have over 1000 sites, and it's just me, my wife and one part time employee (used to have 2 full-timers, but can't pay that out in labor anymore )

If you really have 1000+ sites and cant average $10/month per site in your sleep you should find another profession.

You can create a special domain (but don't ever lose it!) and create a special subdirectory and for each site make a name like "sponsor-site-campaign.php" and put a jump script there. Then whenever you would link to the sponsor you simply link to your jump script instead. You can also disallow it in robots.txt so it doesn't take link juice.

If a sponsor ever folds or screws you then you can change it in less than a minute globally. As a bonus with a decent stats program like awstats you can see exactly what you are really sending each sponsor without relying on their stats. And you can delve into your raw access logs to get more info if needed too.

Over 1000 sites???

From the sound of that, the problem is less the economy and more your business/marketing strategy. Quantity over quality just doesn't work these days. And with that many sites I'm guessing quality is in short supply.

We were doing over that before, and that was the concept of having that many sites.. if we can make X number of dollars per site per month, we would make out in volume,.. but also keep in mind the cost of expenses, domain reg, hosting, labor, etc.. it's not all profit.. Then add in my own personal budget affected by mismanagement of money by overextending myself with multiple new vehicles, new home, remodeling, kids college, etc fooling myself into thinking that the hay-day would never end, even though I knew better... (and I did know better because sales were crazy good before and there was no way it could have stayed that way forever).. I guess I'm pissed at myself for ignoring what I knew was inevitable and not "adapting" prior to a problem I knew would happen one day, rather than scrambling around after the fact.

I hear ya, and I admit it is very difficult (if not completely impossible) to keep up with, especially now with just 3 (or rather 2.5) of us..... volume is probably no longer the way to go.
