for gfy users from the U.S. - would you please tell me where do you go on holiday?

Hello all,

we are doing a hotel booking website, and i am trying to pinpoint the most popular holiday destinations, where americans go on holiday for.

I would rather hear what real people say than look up some statistic, so that's why im asking.

I would appreciate if you could share your travelling habits, such as how many times do you travel, to where etc.

Thanks!

We dont "go on holiday" ...we take vacations. I think it would be safe to say Las Vegas and Hawaii are the top US vacation destinations. And 2-3 vacations a year would be my guess for most Americans.

My guess is 90% or more Americans have never been to Las Vegas or Hawaii and never will in addition to the fact they couldn't afford 2-3 vacations a year much less 1 trip to either of those locations in their entire life. But yes those are tourist traps but mostly for foreigners.

My vacations consist of a cabin in the woods on the river far away from everyone else and I wouldn't want it on yours or anyone else's map and/or website.

If money is an issue, the national parks are very popular here in the summer.

If money isn't an issue NewYork City and Washington DC. are good places to explore.

People in the US don't go on holiday, it's a European concept, they are allowed to do a bit of 'Traveling' just the once

Yeah... when you want some days off in the U.S. you get fired at the spot... and if you do get a change to get a week free time... it's on your own expences.

I have always liked Northern California, Big Sur, San Francisco and north along the Pacific coastline -- a lot depends on the time of year that's a good area except for the winter rainy season. The redwood and sequoia forests are an example of America's natural beauty and well worth the short inland trip. Further north, Oregon and Washington state are very nice too.

On the east coast; New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia are American centers of power and history. Boston is a pre-revolution city that has enjoyed a renaissance to a very impressive modern city too. Boston is said to be one of the best places to live in America.

You could come to visit America five times and see five different Americas -- this is a very diverse country.

Divide your site by family type.

Young families with kids, old people, or singles each go to an entirely different list of places.

We don't take holidays, we take vacation. And I would venture most people travel to see their family half the time. This year we'll be making five trips to Southern California to see family.

You have to remember the United States is huge - The United States is the size of Europe.

For me my vacation of choice is Hawaii.

We had to take a trip to Vegas for my kid's team, championship blah blah blah, and I was surprised at the number of people in our group that had never been to Vegas before.

It's a different culture, many Europeans would find it difficult to get used to. In Europe it's normal to have 5 weeks paid leave per year, or if you've got a really good job you get more.

I'm thinking the same, I think within the next 10 years they'll start to bring that down.

I think that varies from country to country, here its 20 workdays/year if I'm correct (so basically 4 weeks), but still a lot..

Most of us stay home or visit family for the holiday(s). Holiday(s) are usually just an extra day or 2 off from work. I use it to entertain (parties, BBQ, cookout, etc.).

When I vacation, I usually leave the country for places like Jamaica or other destinations with all inclusive resorts. Once in a while I will go to Europe but it's not my first choice because it seems like an old version of the US with higher prices.

Where on earth did you hear this?

Some interesting European thoughts on the American vacation in this thread. Most of them wrong.

As has been said, the term "going on holiday" would get some blank stares in the USA. For us "holidays" are a day or two off for Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or the usual Xmas/Easter/etc. These are usually spent with family & friends, or a short weekend getaway camping or at the coast/beach or similar.

For "vacations", which are the longer leisure travels - Hawaii, Cancun & Playa Del Carmen, Vegas, Florida Keys, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Cabo, NYC, national parks like the Grand Canyon/Yosemite/Big Sur/etc, are probably the big ones.

There are many many smaller destinations on the continent that are fantastic too, but the above are probably the most popular. And contrary to the belief of some on here, there are plenty of average middle class Americans who do get around 4 weeks of paid time off every year.

we have a simple ESL misunderstanding here - for most of us "holiday" is simply what americans call vacation.

it took me a while to understand that holidays are something different than i thought

Who is talking about average family?
OP is making holiday (ok vacation) website and wants to highlight popular destinations. Op is not going to highlight "local beach" or "cabin in the woods" or "at home" that suits average families better. Its a vacation website he is creating...

Outer banks of North Carolina (Cape Hatteras)
Myrtle Beach South Carolina.
Google map these places, I don't think you would be disappointed in the outer banks

Like most people have mentioned, this country is huge and it all depends on what you are looking to do while on vacation. Good luck.....have fun

You were shocked that it was not on the list of popular destinations so far. Most Americans have a family, which explains why the Caribbean is not a popular destination.

I already admitted (thats obvious!) that most americans spend their vacation close to home and so on, but OP is creating vacation website, OP is not going to list "local beach" or "at home" on it. Get a god damn clue! Have you ever visited vacation website?

Your chart is talking about government required paid vacation days and holidays. We do not have government required paid vacation and holidays, but 77% of employees receive both according to the article.

Quote:
The researchers found that 77 percent of U.S. workers get paid vacation time. The workers who do receive it get an average of 13 days a year, according to the analysis.
Almost all full-time jobs give vacation time, sick time, and holiday pay. Some part-time jobs do as well. For example, I get I believe it's one week sick pay, two weeks vacation pay, and seven paid major holidays from TB.

Are you having a bad day?

Again I was explaining why nobody has mentioned either yet. They are not that common. Why would someone mention something that is not common?

Here. Let's vacation in Tahiti. Thread starter, create a massive section about a vacation package to Tahiti because it's pretty and exotic and lots of fun.

Happy now?

If I was creating a website targeted to Americans about American vacations that Americans actually take, I would probably feature vacation destinations that Americans actually go on. Apparently that's insane!

Of course its about the official/government paid vacations, that's the one you can accurately track.. Here in EU you can get more paid/sick paydays too.

We found Cape May to be loaded with too many Qweebecers. But the area was very nice and we spent a few hours at the zoo.

When I had to sell my adult websites I also moved to the NE and took a full time job. It wasn't the best pay I've ever had, but I worked 3x12hr shifts meaning I had 4 days off each week.

Added to this I had 1 week sick time, 2 weeks vacation and usually 2 weeks of what was called floating holidays. We got extra vacation days if a paid holiday landed on another shifts work day. If it landed on our day, we just had a paid day off.

Simply put had 5 weeks of paid time off. This working for staples.com at one of their warehouses, so no I wasn't even in mgmt.

To the OP a lot of US families go RV camping rather than traditional stays at hotels or resorts.

The big attractions are usually the beaches and casinos out side of people doing stuff like Disney and so on.

Personally, I'm doing about a year long roam of the US at the moment. I'm traveling around new england now then will head south once it gets cold. After that I'm headed west.

Personally, I prefer to not have a destination; just a date I am leaving and when I have to be back. Get in a car and drive. Whenever you see something shiny, pull off the main road and investigate.

Beartooth Mountains . . . and for Europeans that want to explore the US the way I do, I do provide customized tours.

Edit: That might be the Grand Tetons

My guess was the Tetons.

Nice shots. The American West has an astounding amount of natural beauty - I think even people in other parts of the USA aren't fully aware how much there is to see & do there (saying this as someone who moved from east coast to west about 16 years ago).

Personally, if I choose to travel outside the country, my current favorites are Japan, Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand. As runner ups and well worth visiting are Singapore, Thailand, Greece, Turkey and China.

Just my opinion.

Thank you. There is cool stuff all over the country; the first couple of pics were from somewhere between Arkansas and Illinois, then there is some CA, MT, WY and MO included. You just need to get off the interstate.

Vacations

A lot of people with kids and some younger adults go to theme parks, older adults go to places like Branson, Missouri.
Water parks are popular for people with kids. My ex worked at a hotel with indoor/outdoor water park. Said a lot of people from surrounding states came. A lot of them looked like they had to pawn everything they owned to get there.

They had to build a dozen hotels for the new NASCAR track. People who don't live near a city with a football or baseball team will take a long weekend to go.
Big lakes like Lake of the Ozarks have lots of hotels and rental condos.
Bed & Breakfasts are popular. They're usually away from big cities. Mostly they cater to couples.

I thought to earn hotel commissions you have to be a registered travel agent.
