Kids go to school with no job waiting for them. Why? Because they want to learn, but they don't want to learn what they need to learn.

I think we've evolved to the point where we've stopped (or should stop) looking at schooling as a means to a JOB since most jobs continue to evolve. Maybe it's better to look at GETTING EDUCATED instead.

Actually back in the day you went to school to get an education. If you got the education regardless the degree companies would hire you, train and grow your talent.
Now its to get a job and alot of the jobs a high school diploma would be fine. You really need a 4 yr degree to be a receptionist? The problem is companies want everyone to come in with experience. They don't want to train and grow employees anymore. A friend of mine graduated college 15 yrs ago, a degree in biology. He had a job with a health care ins company selling right out of the gate. His job had nothing to do with his degree.
I know three people who got business degrees this past year. Two are waitstaff and one cant find anything.
Also its an excuse for more H1b visas, because h1b visas tend to make 30 percent less than Americans with the same skill set.

He has good points but it goes back to companies dont want to train people to do the work. They want them to come in trained on day one. I remember when I worked for Mercedes, they had techs in training at the dealership I worked at. They taught these guys how to be a Mercedes tech and paid them a decent wage while they were learning and working on cars.
Mike Rowe was on Real Time talking about 100 mechanic jobs Caterpillar cant fill. I bet you dollars to donuts Caterpillar isnt willing to train those people and grow them in to techs. Where once that would of been standard operating procedure.

Computers eliminated millions of jobs and will eliminate even more in years to come.
In Europe 30 hour work week was tested just to allow more people to actually work...

Yup, looks like a lot of jobs going overseas. The world is getting smaller and more higher educated jobs are being needed now.

I know a lot of people that went to university with X job in mind. Took all the classes and spent ass tons of money on it to graduate and find out 1. there were few if any jobs, and 2. they had no idea how to preform those jobs.

True. Anything to do with religion is pointless, yet we used to spend atleast an hour on the ancient mythical tales per fucking week.

You can always immediately tell who has never hired, trained and invested money in employees and ran a business and who hasn't in these conversations.

The problem with the modern 'education' system is that it is geared towards cranking out a docile 'work force.' There's really no focus on EDUCATION per se.

No it's kids are sold the lie that they have to go to college and most have no idea how far in debt they will be by the time they get out.

Most kids would be far better off going to a good trade school vs getting a degree. Yet they aren't told this but rather told they need the degree.

Smart people that work hard and strive for excellence in everything they do, whether its sweeping restroom floors or building rocket engines are always ok. It's usually less intelligent; less hardworking people that have endless complaints and grievances against their betters and want to lecture everyone all day long about conspiracy, about being exploited and about life being unfair.

Success in life and blame do not compliment each other well.

Refusing to accept personal accountability and laying blame is the opiate of the uneducated, unskilled and mediocre and the easily replaceable.

It could be that the answer changes as everything is cyclical? An Art History major looks fine if employment is high and they are looking for people. It is death in a market with 7+% unemployment. That has been true for 30 years. Computer Science and Engineering degrees have always been in demand for the most part.
So people who "go to learn" might want to learn a little up front and pick something to learn that people want to pay for. Also some careers are very cyclical. I would not do Petro-Chemcial right now even though it is the best degree you can get at the moment. Finance which is way out of favor might be a better bet if you are getting out in 4 years. People just need to pay attention a bit.
