I'm wondering what the word even means anymore?

It hasn't been used by a slave owner to a slave since the 1860's.

It was used pretty commonly up until the late 1960's during segregation in a derogatory way.

But since the 1970's (Richard Pryor) it has been used almost exclusively by blacks. That's 40 years.
How much longer will we have to wait for a word to lose it's "power" when it already has no power for white people to use it?

I think that's what bothers a lot of non-blacks (white, asian, jewish, hispanic)...it seems like no matter how many decades go by, the "problem" is never solved.

I guess multi-millionaires like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, etc. would see their cash flow and power end if this shit were allowed to stop.
None of those guys were born millionaires. And none of them ever had "real" jobs.

The funniest thing about this thread is that the original story is about an innocent family who was shot at for using some idiot lady's driveway to turn around. The likelihood is that the family was also white. How racial nonsense got mixed in with this just shows how people REALLY feel about things, and how the Trayvon case is still a lightning rod.

This reminds me that when I was a kid visiting cousins, we would drive around and just pick a random house. We'd park in the driveway and go ring the doorbell and when it opened, we'd shout "we're here!" as if we were expected visitors. Then we would apologize that we were at the wrong address and leave. I guess these days that's just inviting some gunshot wounds and maybe a couple of funerals?

Depends on where you lived.

I lived in central Fla. as a kid. Half the time you might get away with it. 49% of the time a dog would have eaten your ass up. And every once in a while you might get shot.

Back in the 1990s through 2008, I lived in S.C. Same thing. Either dog bit or shot.

Here in Vegas...I'm not sure. I live in a beautiful gated community. So you wouldn't have been able to get in.
But if you went to some poorer all-black neighborhoods or poorer all hispanic or poorer white neighborhoods and tried that...I'm pretty sure you would get killed or beaten so bad you would wish you were dead

I grew up in the 1960's and 1970's in central Fla.

That's a time where you would definitely have gotten dog bit, shot, or beat up over doing stupid shit. Everybody had guns in their homes and in their pickup trucks and cars. It was just normal.

That said...me and my dumb ass friends all did shit constantly. Toilet Papering yards, bashing in mailboxes with baseball bats, cutting donuts in people's yards, and other assorted juvenile stupidity that made us laugh like hell.

And as I said earlier...looking back on it now, and thinking about all the times we were chased, threatened, etc. and BARELY got away...it's a miracle I didn't get killed when I was a teenager.

We never locked our doors because everyone knew everybody's name and business anyway. By growing up hard I'm talking about growing up in a place where you would get bitten by dog after ringing someones doorbell and having them open the door. Dog bit or shot for playing a stupid prank doesn't sound like a friendly place.

If you knew what it was like to grow up in a small town, you would know that it's not terribly uncommon to be welcome in someones home. My friends and I would routinely just knock and walk right in to each others houses saying "hello?" It was a NICE place, see what I'm saying? As I have four brothers who all shared similar privileges, there could be any number of people around in the house. This was not stupid, it was friendly, neighborly, nice and normal. Nobody would sick their dog on you or pull a freaking gun out of paranoia or whatever other reason there could be. I'd call such a place scary, unfriendly, uninviting and.. hard to grow up in. That's not a judgment by the way, so try not to take it personally. Not saying you were, but it seems like it.

That's not neighborly, that's invading someone's privacy. You could walk in on someone naked for instance or having sex or in the middle of a family argument.

As far as "small towns" go...the town I lived in as a child was Bowling Green, Florida. To this day it only has 2,800 people living there. I'd say it was VERY small.

Still don't know anyone in that tiny country town who would have just strolled into somebody else's home unannounced.

Teen years were in Bartow Fla. It's grown since the 1970's Today it has 16,959 people living there.

I would NEVER walk into a person's home without calling ahead, knocking, etc.

And since most people in those small towns own dogs...YES, you would probably get bitten by the family dog if you just walked in to the house. And back in the 1960's and 1970's where I lived people didn't keep their dogs chained up or in fences, they roamed freely. That's the way it was in small country towns.

Don't know why we're arguing this.

The town I grew up in is still less than 1500 people and it's almost doubled since the early 70's. If you know a family and they know you and treat you like their own child, then you don't have a problem with it. As I said in my first post on the subject, we grew up in different worlds obviously. Someone whipping out a gun or sic'ing their dog on you never, ever happened where I came from, but obviously did where you come from. Such is life. I believe you and you should return the courtesy I guess, but up to you.

If my best friends family and my family had no problem with it, I don't see why anyone else would. Do you think I'm using my time to lie to someone on the internets? Maybe some of the others here do that but not me.

My friends dogs name was Pal and he was a big mutt and would be more likely to lick me in the face annoyingly than bite me when I walked in. It's not like you pick a random home and waltz in, you know? This was my best friends houses, and my mother knew their mother, and the fathers, and my best friend had 4 older sisters whereas I had 4 older brothers. We all knew each other.

Not unusual in the small town America that I grew up in, and your mileage obviously varied.

Nobody "sicked their dog on you". They simply owned dogs. The dogs would come after people coming up in your yard.

Going into a "close friend's" house is a WHOLE lot different than just walking into a person who is not a "close friend's" house.

And nobody "whipped out guns".

Everybody owned them and kept them close at hand. And to my knowledge...nobody ever got shot by a friend or family member in my little towns when I grew up. Everyone knew how to handle guns and respected them because we grew up that way.

And I still will tell you...I don't care how small the town is, if you are not close buddies with somebody, you just know them and they know who you are because the town is small....and you go walking into their home unannounced: That is VERY uncool and wouldn't be appreciated by anybody.

And if you did it and their dogs were running loose (like everyone's dogs did in small towns in the 60's and 70's) you probably would have gotten bit. And if you walked into my house like that and we weren't friends but just knew each other casually from living in the same town....well, you better start talking fast or I will jump on your ass.

I'm still in disbelief that you think it's cool to walk into people's homes like that. Not family, not close friends (though I would personally never be so discourteous to even my friends and family), but just walking into anybody's home because everyone is so "neighborly" they don't mind.

Very few people didn't know each other there and more than once when I had to collect for my brothers paper route I would open the door and holler hello for people I didn't really know too well. Nothing bad ever happened, so there ya go. Small towns are good for growing up in like that, but you can't ever keep anything secret.

But if by that you mean white people in general you're very much mistaken.

The ancestors you speak of were:

1. The equivalent of today's 1% who resided in the southern half of the USA prior to 1865 and who also owned slaves.
2. The whites who acted as middlemen in the purchase and sale of those slaves.
3. The whites who manned the ships that transported the slaves over from Africa.
4. Any other whites who somehow profited monetarily from the slave trade.

All told, those people accounted for a very small percentage of America's pre-1865 white population.

It is their descendants and their descendants alone that qualify today as "ones who's ancestors brought them over here".
