I have a friend who's a Wing Chun teacher.

I don't know what level he is, but he's a small guy and I wouldn't fuck with him.

He mostly teaches children.

We're in the process of trying a couple lessons for the kids. When they were at their trial lesson, some dude was practicing with some big ass nunchucks, not like the small ones Bruce Lee used. I was slightly aroused

Sam Chuk Chu Chuk Bong... its Korean ;)

Kung Fu or Gong Fu is very cool. I practiced for a few years and my fave was Ocean Form or Tang Non, from beginning to end can take a few hours.

The guy in the videos was one of my instructors. Lots to learn from him thats for sure

hapkido or hap ki do or hapki-do (do at the end generally means way of , etc)

Wing-Chun is good, providing you don't get a twat teaching it, and also Aikido is also good, both are normally learnt by people who don't want to be screaming the fuck at each other. They both have lots of self-defence and that satisfaction of learning something that feels fluid and you've learnt something stylish.

There is a reason you don't see all this bullshit in UFC Fights... something to think about....
There is a reason that all real fighting gravitated towards the very basics of fighting. basic punching, basic boxing, basic kick boxing and basic grappling. I wouldn't count on a bunch of retarded poses to save you.

The best answer is probably that it really depends on what you want to get out of it. I was really only speaking about actual fighting and fighting arts. If its for balance, speed, flexibility, culture etc.. thats all great. You can find those places and those people which offer those things that appeal to you.

Within the context of actual fighting, I think the first, most important fact about martial arts is that the style is almost 100% irrelevant next to who is teaching. For example, most Tae Kwon Do is just silly acrobatics performed by goofballs and where black belts are handed out just for signing up. That doesn't mean that there aren't phenomenal Tae Kwon Do fighters or teachers. I know a few. VERY FEW. Also, when you see a lot of weapons on the walls etc.. always a bad sign in my view. You could spend years just learning how to punch correctly/better. Adding all kinds of other retarded elements like weapons is a great sign of how goofy the trainer/art is. Sadly, the fantasy in martial arts sells much better than hard work and achieving an impressive level of skill over a long period of time. Thats what makes it so tough to do as a business.. which I have.

I honestly don't know much about hapkido. I can however say that there is a reason you don't see a lot of crazy acrobatic kicks, joint locks and throws in the octagon or anywhere really. I always viewed Hapkido as being a little more aggressive Tae Kwon Do, combining joint locks and throws with silly acrobatics. I can't remember ever watching people train Hapkido that i am aware of and I used to spend a crazy amount of time watching every style I could.

My view on fighting arts is that if you don't trade blows at full speed and power and don't have a win/loss record, then its not a fighting art. It's exercise. It's always tough to see people, particularly women who think they can fight, yet have never had a 225 pound, 5'10" guy trying to tear them in 1/2. It's a completely different experience to train in class with pads, with people who have perfect control and you have no risk of being hurt and actually squaring off with someone where just throwing a punch means he may counter and really do some damage.

yeah, ive always thought that no matter what. The person willing to do the most amount of violence first is usually going to win. I have seen a small guy make large men who claim to be trained in this or that run away quickly because he punched them in the neck..or tried to gauge their eyes while they were still busy posturing about how tough they were..lol

best is to avoid fighting, but id like to learn basic moves to disable someone if they come at me.

I agree completely. I used to have a lot of women who just wanted to feel secure, safe etc. Usually after some traumatic event. I was always kinda sad. They just never wanted to hear that they are not going to fight a guy twice their size and enraged and win. Weapons are also a problem in view/opinion. Weapons make people feel safe.. but being in that situation and actually being able to use it its a different story. The only best answer to defense for someone who doesn't want to mix it up and probably get hurt is to do everything possible to avoid situations where that is probable.

It was always interesting to see how hard it is for the average person to even get comfortable with making contact with another person... kicking or punching. Most people can't even get to that point.

Incidentally, the very first UFC fights were intended to be "style vs style". There were no time limits/rounds, weight classes etc. It was quickly learned yet again, that size matters. There are no magic holds. No magic throws. No magic punches etc. There is only the laws of physics. No style can bend the laws of physics. There is no question as to how to generate the maximum amount of energy with a punch or kick and what the proper form is. This is why everyone basically trains the same - punching(boxing), kicking (kickboxing styles), grappling (bjj). Thats what works.
