I love how the government thinks the threat of a shutdown is really a threat
I was just reading the top 10 things that will happen if he government shuts down on Oct. 1st. The primary thing is that some government employees will not be allowed to come to work, but in the past they have always been paid for the days they missed when things come back online so they will actually be getting a paid vacation. The mail will still come, social security and any other government assistance will still get paid. Government ran parks will be closed and you might not be able to get some permits.
The people who get screwed the most are the soldiers. They will have to do their job, but they don't get paid during the shutdown (although they will get the pay once the shutdown ends). It appears that most people will go on living their lives as normal and never know anything is different. |

You would think they would realize even if they pass something that repeals it the president will veto it and they don't have the votes to overturn the veto.
If they really think it is that bad some people would say the best way to go is to just let it happen and in a few years if it turns out to be the catastrophe they think it will they can say, "See, we told you so. Now vote us into office and we will remove it." But that won't happen. From a political standpoint Obamacare could really hurt the republicans. First, if it works fairly well and people like it, then it makes the republicans look bad and it becomes the foundation of many democrats campaigns. Second, many of the some 30 million who are uninsured or can't get insurance are likely poor, sick, disabled etc. They will now be getting very cheap or free health insurance and many of them will be so happy about it that they will vote against anyone who will take it away. The republicans are desperate to make sure it doesn't happen because short of it crashing and burning it likely turns out bad for them. |

The funny thing is people as a rule hate change and are unhappy so let it go through and use it later to bitch about.

This is true. People will say they want change, but in reality they really don't. There is also a very us against them mentality in this country. Hardcore right wingers blame everything on left wingers and vice versa. If we really wanted change we wouldn't keep elected the same people over and over again.

last time just a "threat alone" caused the market to dip bad do to the speculation... imagine if it was a real shutdown what would have happened

Of course things were different then so the market may react differently this time. |

Last closure here cost 14million a day to the local economy and this time it is peak season.
I would bet we we would loose more than 18 million a day if not more, and that is not counting the loss of future returns. |

Don't confuse government shutdown with failure to raise debt limit/default. The shutdown occurs tonight at midnight but the default would come in a couple weeks and is far worse then the shutdown

They should add another stat to that graphic which states the number of good things COngress has accomplished in the last year. I'm not sure what the stat is, but it's not a whole lot.
