What ended up happening to this? I heard the refs got in trouble?

Wisconsin blew it..tried to run and extra play to center the ball better. If you watched the game even the announcer wondered why they would even do it.. There was very little time left. Then the idiot qb from wisconsin took a half assed knee and then laid the ball on the ground, almost like a fumble. So ASU jumped on the ball. it was all odd.. of course during that time the clock ran out as wisconsin still needed to try and spike the ball to even get a field goal off.. Was there a screwup by the refs, kind of, but the bigger error was on Wisconsin.. and now they try and justify it that the refs really screwed it up.

The rules strongly suggest that you are wrong.

You don't put your team in a position where time runs out if anything goes wrong. Refs should have been more aggressive about getting ASU off the ball and getting it spotted, but Wisconsin coaches put the refs in that position by trying to center up the ball without any timeouts. From 31 yards out the angle isn't that much different, so just kick the field goal and take the lead.

College refs for you.... They blew it, but we all knew had bad the second tier class of refs were from the NFL last year and the referee situation there.

On the flip side look at #31 on ASU. He knew exactly what he was doing. Purposely laid on the ball knowing the clock was ticking. Drained about 5-7 seconds by himself.

He should have taken a knee, then handed the ball to the ref who would have spotted it for the next play immediately.

Laying it on the ground was stupid in that it takes more time for the ref to come get it.

right, if they played better for the other 59+ minutes they wouldn't have a need for that last second field goal attempt...

Sure, but that doesn't erase the fuck up by the ref.

From your logic the ref could end the game in the 3rd quarter since both teams should have already played good enough to win.
