I could bitch about Windows 8 all day and I know that I could install Start8 or ClassicShell or what ever along with bypass start but I didn't really want to have to do that. I don't mind trying to learn new things it's just that Windows 8 seems so user unfriendly.

Things I am currently grumbling about:

1. The start menu. It's a waste of time. It comes with a bunch of apps and shortcuts I have no intention of ever using. I have deleted them all off. When you install something it's supposed to appear here. I downloaded Chrome and whilst it shows in the list of apps and says it's pinned to start - it's not!

2. Chrome. I always use Chrome however for some reason when I use it on Win8 I don't get a taskbar. it's hidden. I am now using Firefox, purely because the taskbar has disappeared in Chrome.

3. Downloading stuff - Things don't download properly. My main gripe is with Skype. I tried the app and found it to be useless so I tried to download the desktop version but it won't even start the download.
Still on downloading, If I use Chrome to download I can see it downloading but when I click to open, nothing happens. The reason? It's the firewall blocking it but because I don't have a taskbar I can't see the fucking alert shield flashing away so it's back to the desktop..

4. The Skype app. Whoever designs these things? None of my contacts profile pictures show up, I need a MS account to open it, it imports my messenger contacts that I don't want. How do you use it to browse the web and watch the video at the same time? How can I switch between accounts. I have x3 Skype accounts I use

5. Why are there no minimize / close buttons on most of the apps and Chrome? Thankfully Firefox has. Why is there no start menu?

What a load of cock.

Personally I don't think it's a big deal to have to delete the apps and shortcuts that you don't want. It's a one-time deal - and it's something that you can't do on the iPad unless it's jailbroken. I have pre-loaded stuff on the iPad that I never use and can't delete

Mine has worked from the beginning, but others have had this problem. Try this: Press on the Customize and Control button (Menu button) then press relaunch on desktop

I don't use Skype, so can't speak to that. I always see the alert shield on the bottom left of the screen - again, maybe this is the fix you're looking for: Press on the Customize and Control button (Menu button) then press relaunch on desktop

Sorry - don't use Skype

1. I'm with you on the minimize buttons, but I've gotten used to "moving" the browser to the side, then working off my desktop. Maybe that will revert in 8.1

2. There is a "Start Menu" Hover the cursor on the bottom left of your screen and it comes right up.

Yep, everyone has a workaround for something that should be intuitive and work...in other words not NEED workarounds. Windows is trying to force everyone into getting used to this shit dumbed down version of windows because they know (as everyone else does) that tablets are going to the dominate device for consumers to buy in the future so they are trying to get them used to the touch OS. They also want it to be the same with smartphones...you learn this Win 8 and you can use all the devices.

While it is a brilliant way to sort of try to "corner the market" it also fucks over those of us who do more with a computer than simply check email and browse the web. I really resent having to workaround an OS when it should work for me and not the other way around.

There I said it!

I guess you've never installed windows from scratch... the very first thing you have to do is install a bunch of drivers in order to get your hardware to work the way it should, or to work at all.

And even if you've never installed windows from scratch and just buy machines with it pre-loaded, if you're not a complete and utter moron you still have to go through and remove the manufacturer bloatware.

Either way, there are things you have to do (or at least very well should assuming you're not an idiot) in order to get windows "working right". So what's 1 or 2 more "drivers" that are smaller in size than pretty much any other driver you'd install?

Man, today's society seems absolutely helpless and incapable of thinking or doing things for themselves without having their hands held... have things really gotten this bad? Geez.

You know that "plug and play" actually works quite well with modern Windows and yes, there is a lot of bloatware and trial software that most remove. Clearly some customization is needed (and nice to be able to easily) as everyone has different needs, and uses their computer system for different tasks.

The pathetic hand-holding is actually what I despise about Win 8. They are making assumptions for me. Don't do that. Don't assume I am too stupid to do that for myself.

Silly colored tiles...really? Take about hand-holding!

And again, you can disable it if you so desire so where exactly is the problem?

If you want a quick way to access your most used program and don't want to jump between desktop and Metro all the time, then you can make a quick launch bar like Vista had.

http://i44.tinypic.com/152ly5s.jpg

As for the start button (start menu) about everything is still there when right clicking left bottom hotspot.

http://i40.tinypic.com/wkmt5s.jpg

I don't see what the huge problem is. Install one of the apps mentioned in other posts if you can't live without the start button or find a workaround.

I didn't like Windows 8 the first couple of days after install, but with a bit of tweeking and taking the time to learn some of all the shortcuts I now find myself working faster than I did on Windows 7.

With the upcomming Windows 8.1 things got even further improved.
I really don't see a reason to downgrade to Windows 7, but each to their own.

I think its best to skip upgrades of windows, I used XP for years and totally missed the Vista disaster and waited until Windows 7 came out which was basically Vista with bug fixes. I'm content with 7 so I will wait until Windows 9 comes out and maybe Microsoft will have things figured out by then.

Lol...

First the operating system is INCLUDED with the purchase of a Mac, and next, the last time Apple charged for their new OS was about 2 years ago and it cost a whopping $20.00. Not only that, but I downloaded it instead of having to go out to by a disc, and it installed quickly and easily in about 10 minutes.

Compare than to $300 for Windows and hours worth of backups and installation. Bah fuck that noise.

I rest my case.

I've used every version of Windows since 3.1 and liked them all. But after I bought a new laptop with Windows 8 and used it for a few hours, I turned around and brought it back to the store. Fucking hate it.

2 x Lol...

The fact that you believe you only pay $20 for the OS is amusing. The cost of OSX when buying a Mac is included in the hardware. For the $1800 iMac it is probably it is at least $300 as well as Windows, and a full configured Mac Pro it is more like $4000.

I paid $40 for windows 8 which is the same price as Apple charge for the Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m). Talk about being butt fucked. "But Apple care about us customers"... If that is really the case, why the hell didn't they include an adapter with the iPhone 5 and iPad 4 then? Instead of charging $29.00 for something that cost them less than a dollar to produce.

Anyway when I mentioned software I wasn't thinking of the OS, but all the programs you have to buy new versions of like Adobe, Autodesk etc. There are lot of extra costs switching systems.

Then you mention backup like it is a time wasting Windows phenomenon. Are you really telling me backups aren't necessary on Apple computers? Holy shit dude.

3-year old vs Chris' dad: 1-0

I do agree Microsoft could have done more to teach the new functions to people though.
Windows 8.1 is what Windows 8 probably should have been from the start.

Sure. Because Google aren't reading your emails, and you are totally safe from NSA if you just install Linux or Mac OS.

propaganda ?
the guy spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to get metro back. The only reason he stuck it out was because it was a test on camera. It was painful to watch.

I agree it was painful to watch. A staged video made to make Windows 8 look worse than it really is.

Listen to the intro words from Chris.. "Dad this is Windows 8..." then listen to the dads last sentence "Now who's put this out?" Like he didn't know. Of course he knows it is Microsoft. That wallpaper even existed since Windows 7 release.

If you read my whole post, i did say MS should have done more to guide new people, but this video is pure propaganda. Why else mention Mac?

no you're right, Windows 8 is super fantastic and easy to use. These videos are all fake lies and Chris's Dad is just pretending not to know what to do.

and all these people did too:

btw my reaction was the exact same at theirs when I used Windows 8.
I like the lady saying she wouldnt upgrade her company to Windows 8 because it would require too much work in retraining everyone, and that XP to 7 was easy, 7 to 8 isnt worth it lol.

He probably mentions Mac because he was SO frustrated not being able to do basic things in Windows 8 that he wants to use anything but W8

I built my own PC box. The hardware is from around 2007-2008.

I've never had to install a bunch of drivers on Windows 7 or 8. My video card works. I have an old Brother laser printer and Windows 7 recognized it without a problem. I shared it and my Windows 8.1 RT saw it on the network, and installed the driver all by itself.

Same with my cheap keyboard and $100 Logitech mouse it all just works.
