Heartbreaking dogs ??...

People really need to think before they impulsively get a living loving friend that doesn't understand why he/she got dumped ??

A couple weeks ago my old dog died. Yesterday I took her beds, washed blankets, some toys, unused medicine, food to the local animal shelter.

I was stunned at what I saw, 60-70% of the dogs were Pitt Bull or Pitt Bull mixes. The supervisor I talked to said they consistently run at least 50% and almost without exception are never adopted. Just housed then put down.

"Predominately owned by young males who purchased them as accessories not pets. As soon as a current landlord or future landlord tells them they can't have that breed the dogs get dumped." She also said when young couples have children many dump the dogs under pressure of their families.

While I was there a senior Golden Retriever with hip problems was being adopted but cage after cage of young Pitts wait to be put to death. Pretty sad.

We adopted our yellow lab / chow mix from the shelter. I think she was abused by the males in whoever her previous family were b/c for the longest time she would bolt from the sound of a deep voice and I was the only one in the house who could groom her, bathe her, etc...

It's been 6 years since we got her and she is sooooo much better now. Very low key dog. Still doesn't like the cat, but the cat doesn't like her either so it works. The cat rules the stairs, the dog rules the kitchen, and the living room is tentatively the DMZ.

So sad. Sickens me these people take animals as accessories, really they should get harsh fines (my personal opinion they should be jailed), to prevent them doing in future again.

That's because people are fucking stupid and ignorant as fuck.

This kind of thing really pisses me off. The humane society by me is OVER capacity, and all most all pitbulls. Nothing against the bread, they make great pets, but it's the scum bags of society that continue to breed these dogs, idiots buy them, then their landlord says they can't have the animal... which only ends up at the pound.

It's sad, but IMO, if you adopt an animal and have to give it up, YOU should be responsible for the rest of it's life if someone else can't.

My lovely dog... Never had a problem with her and she is well trained. She plays with children and it's perfectly safe. My house is next to a school and all the children love her.

Some fucking people shouldn't own a dog. It makes me sick!

They should start a registry for people that bring animals to shelter... I am sure some kids are not at their first drop

Having an animal should be a privilege

Think of the type of person you usually see with a pitbull, and there you have your answer.

Humane Society here does. You bring one in and drop it off, you're not ever going to be able to take one down the road.

This is sad, but most of humans are not smart and responsive enough to have pets. Even animals sometimes more humane than homo sapiens:

I hate when people on here say "it's just an animal".

That statement alone makes my blood boil...

Here's the facts as I see them and it breaks my heart thinking of the look in the eyes of abandoned pets that will not get adopted. Pets that don't understand what they did wrong. Pets that just want their family back.

Homeowners, apartment owners and home owner associations are afraid of being dragged into court should one of their tenants/residents have a dog that bites someone. Some even have insurance companies that omit dangerous breeds from their policies. So they take the easy and sometimes safe way out by prohibiting the ownership of these dogs.

This is becoming so prevalent that the only real way the breed can be safely owned is by owning your own single family property. Effectively preventing dog ownership to a large segment of the population that buys this breed.

This post isn't to argue about the breeds "safety" but to express my dismay at the amount of dogs that are getting killed in animal shelters. It would be nice to see some type of public message or educational promotion to address the problem of "inappropriate" ownership.

A "think before you buy" campaign stressing you will have a difficult time finding housing if you own this type dog.

Please don't criticize this post unless you first visit your local shelter and see first hand the sad faces on doggy death row.

Here it's the same but nearly every dog is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or a mix of anything you can imagine crossed with them.

While the dog type is likely why they aren't adopted, it's likely the "type" of people whom own pit bulls as to why so many are there.. It's usually not "normal" dog owners that have pit bulls.. It's almost always the stereo typical white trash and black wanna be gang bangers. Neither of these groups are really known for being responsible.

jailed? for owning a dog then taking it to a shelter? what flavour of reality have you lost touch with?

I think its terrible too but how could you possibly think all the people who can't keep their dogs anymore are doing it for that reason? Or prove anything for that matter.

What?

There's more vicious dogs, there are stronger dogs, but pit bulls have tendencies for both and have ZERO breeding standards so its a crap shoot every time, which makes them more dangerous. Mix this with a propensity for attracting horrible owners and what do you get? so not a direct link but true to those facts.

basically if labs were not bred for temperament for years and years, they would be just as dangerous in general. But they have been bred for the opposite so...

You can thank rap music for this.

Every wanna be gang banger / rapper got one to boost their pathetic self-image...then when they discover that it's more than just a fashion accessory they dump the poor thing!

Give me dogs over people any day!

Yeah. Dogs are bigger responsibilities than children are. With children you don't have to train it when to go to the bathroom, not to kill people, not to chew your couches and shit. I tell my GF all the time that our German Shepherd is much more work than a child. I have the experience too. I raised my little sister from age 5 months, so thats a good reference.

Our dog needs 1 hour plus of exercise a day. He needs to eat at specific times. Go out to do business several times a day. Lot's of personal attention to keep him confident and brain strong.

Most people who are not familiar with fighting and herding breeds do not know what they are getting into.

It's really sad for the animals.

I'm a strong believer in having to take tests and licenses to own an animal. I'm also a fan of people needing the same permission to breed with another human. That would solve some of the countries problems right there.

Poor doggies.

This is also what makes them almost un-adoptable. Looking at a young Pitt in the shelter you have no idea if it was brought up to lick kittens or attack tires hanging by chains. No one wants to take a chance on unknown breeding and what kind of bad training the puppy had. Poor little fuckers.

Unfortunately, the pit bull breed attracts people who shouldn't own dogs. That's not a blanket statement, because I know a pit owner who is great with his dog -- and the dog is awesome too. But it's largely macho douches attracted to the breed.

I know everyone is down on the over-legislation of our lives, but we're too stupid to not have some enforced control over how you acquire a dog. You should have to take some kind of personality test, and it should be required to spay/neuter the dog in it's first year of life. A large part of those dogs put down would never exist in the first place if idiots would quit breeding for fun.

I have five pups I care for, the mamma dog found me as a stray. She had her puppies and I fell in love with every personality that came to grow. We adopted the cutest ones to very good friends and still know of there existences and updates. She was a mix of small greyhound with a bit of fight in her as well. She grew up wild and has taking a bit of work to allow her to trust us as her pack. Well, one of the pups is full on pit mix, and has been my personal project as he has so many different needs and special direction, made me relies something. The breed is very different than any other I have lived with. His love is intense, as is his want to please. With his spirit, he has had some dust ups with the other males with only wanting to protect his alpha male genetic.
I have acreage, and plenty of food and love. There is just something in his wiring that is a bit off? His name is Optomo, as optimistic as he is, we will find his happy place with us, and will never ever give up on him. They are a special breed, more loving then any other I have ever had the pleasure to share time with......they just take more love then your average, happy go lucky dog.
And for the record, when you decide to take anything into your home as family, they should be treated better then you would treat yourself.
That is what love will make you do...........

Or what about dogs who never go outside?

the guy who lives next door to me has a dog, which I've only heard barking through the walls and whining because he's all alone in the house for long hours. I don't know how the dog shits and pisses, because I've never seen him outside for a walk, or for any reason. In my neighborhood, everyone knows me and my 100lb Lab, because we're outside several times a day, and I take him for walks. If I haven't seen your dog yet, that's because you never take the poor guy outside. Shit breaks my heart.

Very true, I see the problem where I live in the country, could so easily be controlled if people would just spay them. It is a huge problem. Local SPCA, makes it mandatory if you adopt, or they will lock your ass up.

In my neighborhood, everyone knows me and my 100lb Lab, because we're outside several times a day, and I take him for walks. If I haven't seen your dog yet, that's because you never take the poor guy outside. Shit breaks my heart.
And the poor dog knows he shouldn't piss/crap in the house so holds it then feels guilty and goes anyway. And the stupid owner probably gives him a hard time.

Some fucking people shouldn't own a dog. It makes me sick!
What a beautiful girl.

I was laid up with the flu for almost a week - caught me by surprise. My young dog won't even crap in the backyard - he likes a clean playground. My older dog can hold it, and he'll eventually have a dump deep in the bushes. I was so sick for two days that the young pup pissed on the floor, and the poor boy came and got me out of bed and showed me where he had his "accident".

He was so upset. He led me right to his pee and he was so happy when I cleaned it up without getting mad at him. Then I forced myself to walk him, puking all over the sidewalk. But he was happy.

You're a good man. Most people don't realize their dogs human is the ONLY thing in their life and will die to please them. Your poor pup was probably so upset that he disappointed you. "Forgiving" instantly is the sign of a real dog person.
