OSX Mavericks Free Upgrade?

I just logged into the Mac App Store to buy the upgrade and it seems I got it for free. Not sure why, didn't read anything it being a freebie. Anyone else get this? Did I miss the memo?

They also removed Mountain Lion from the store. Which I figured they'd do, just not that quickly.

Yes, I did miss the memo:

http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/22/4...ase-date-price

Apple has just announced the latest version of OS X, 10.9 Mavericks, will be available as a free Mac App Store download today.

Yeah, apparently it's free to upgrade ...
I've expected it around $20 as the previous releases.

upgrading to mountain lion was pretty painless. mavericks, not so much. it failed the first time. and loading mail.app after install was painful, took at least an hour to load mail.

first world problems are rough.

say what? Windows 8 just got a free 8.1 upgrade recently. In fact most of the upgrades for windows have been free for decades. Or maybe you were kidding?

It's not really a ".1" upgrade...well, I guess it is... but the website says 200 new features. Some of the features look great especially the improved multi-display support which was already pretty damn good to begin with...

But yes I was kidding anyway... people around here seem so picky when it comes to PC's vs Mac's which has to be the stupidest argument ever.

The "best computer", is the computer that's "best for you".

It's 2:51am eastern time and I am starting the download...right....NOW. Will post after the update is done and give my first impressions.

Funny to watch the keynote and how the crowd run amok when announced they were saving a whopping $20.00 on the OS. The same people camping the streets for days for a $850.00 phone or even more overpriced hardware.

And free Office replacement apps, with collaboration, and free movie editing, free photo management and editing etc.

The point is, that they won't charge for an OS again. The margin is hardware, not software. Very sensible move really.

They also make big money off the appstore.. don't forget that part.

Yes, but the existence of the app store doesn't persuade someone to buy their hardware. The fact they don't need to buy Office365, OSs or media creation/management software certainly makes the hardware more tempting for some.

So here's a quick report:

I downloaded the update last night around 2:51am and it took about 10 minutes. I started the installation and the timer said it would take about 40 minutes to complete. It seemed to be going faster but it was late and I was tired so I went to sleep.

When I got up the installation was finished and my desktop was up showing me the new features.

No errors no bugs no "are you sure?" no "click here to reboot" no "please close xyz before installing", etc. Just, done.

There are differences to programs like Safari and Calendar. The notification centre is also slightly different. Each of my monitors now have a menu bar and the controls are better. Also using my 3rd display wirelessly seems faster but I'm not sure if its related to the new OS or if its something else. I buy ebooks so the addition of the ebook reader is a nice but overdue touch. Apple Maps is now an app but I will still use Google maps at least for now.

Overall, seamless update.
