the only issue here is it does not have a wipe feature that I see.

Yeah I have heard people talk about that But I live outside the US and its not the same here. And I don't think lojack has a wipe feature either.

Treucrypt is nice but not what im looking for. not only want the data protection but also the chance at recovery/visiting punishment on the person that stole the thing.

anyone with half a brain will format a stolen computer so it all depends on how stupid the thief is

Thats the good thing for me. Even the "trained techs " have half a brain when it comes to puters around here.

Then the owner is over all shit out of luck.

I have not found anything yet that can stop that but this idea was on one site.

This can be somewhat thwarted by going into your notebook's BIOS settings and disabling the option for the computer to boot from a USB device or network connection, and locking down access to the BIOS with a password. (I say "somewhat," because the thief could still physically remove the hard drive from your notebook, and access its contents by connecting it to another computer.)
