Pet injures former mayor in Ariz., kills husband
Contributing: The Associated Press

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. ? The former mayor of this city of almost 40,000 was hospitalized and her husband died after the couple's pet dogs attacked them, according to the current mayor.

Former Mayor Diane Vick and her husband, Tom, tried to intervene after one of their larger dogs attacked one of their smaller dogs, but the dogs turned on them and attacked them, Mayor Jack Hakim said. They were flown to a hospital in Las Vegas.

Tom Vick and his wife tried to break up a fight Saturday evening between the family's boxer and cocker spaniel, police said. The boxer attacked both of them.

Tom Vick, 64, who taught social studies at Mohave High School, died of his injuries Sunday, Hakim said. Diane Vick "was pretty well beat up," but Hakim didn't believe her injuries were critical.

Hakim called the incident "pretty devastating."

"We've had dog bites before but never something like this," he said. "It's very sad for us in Bullhead City. She was former mayor and he was a prominent high school teacher at Mohave High School. ... We're just grateful that at least one of them was able to survive."

The dogs are being held at the Bullhead City Animal Control facility.

Pretty pathetic way to go in this modern day and age...now in Africa one might expect this sort of thing.

I understand exactly why this happens. I am not a huge dog person, but I have a dog, a black lab (she's here with me under my desk) and we go for walks at least daily. My dog is a part of our family. Two neighbors on both sides of me both have dogs, which they keep locked up in a side yard or a cage most of the time - they NEVER walk them. One of the dogs has already attacked someone.

What's the point of a having a dog if you just lock it up in a small cage?

Sure...they are cute while they are puppies...

But when they grow up it's a whole other story!

I tend to agree with this. I think there was something wrong with the dog ownership aspect to this story. I can't think of any situation in which my Lab would attack me. It's basically a 90lb wolf that lives in my house who could wrap his jaws around my throat, but I get my face close to his without one bit of fear. Just the fact that they've said they've had dog bites before shows they don't have a handle on their animals. In what world do you own a pet and get bitten by them, and don't either a: get rid of the animal or B: train it until you're sure it won't happen again?

...and I know the guy was in his 60's but I can't think of any way I'd lose a fight with a boxer, unless my hands were tied behind my back. That dog would be dead.

Once your dog thinks he can kick your ass then he thinks he's top dog and you're in trouble. Its the biggest mistake dog owners make.

If an owner can't raise his voice and have his dog instantly freeze/stop then he's not the dogs owner.

Dogs are cute when they're still a puppy but they become more lovable as they become adults.

completely agree. Once you get a dog, the family has a new member. And everything changes. It's a responsibility, just like a kid.

should be a rule of thumb: 'if you're experience of having a pet isn't wonderful, you're a fucking moron'

If a dog bites ONCE you take him to the yard or garage and come back alone.
