Laptop cooling pads
One fans or two?
I just lost the following Targus, which I don't think was cool enough as I lost a hard drive due to heat a few months ago: http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Chill-A...ptop+chill+mat I'm thinking about getting this girl, she looks like a beast! I also like that she has a USB out: http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Ma.../ref=pd_cp_e_3

I just got my new cooling pad in today - pretty much the same as that second link, but five smaller fans rather than one large one. It also has the USB out and a secondary port to make up the one lost for plugging it in. Kept my laptop cool all day long and it was very quiet. I got mine off eBay for like £12.

Cool, fans powered by your USB putting more strain on your computer causing it to overheat

They can drop the temperature by up to about 5 degrees celsius and improve airflow to some hot spots but chances are if you are losing hard drives to heat there are other issues. Is your CPU fan working correctly? Is there dirt in the heat sink? Are the vents open and not clogged with dirt?
The blue LED is cool and all but it does ntohing to help keep it cool alone. In fact it just draws more power unnecessarily. Hopefully the LED can be turned off when in use. Check with a diagnostics tool or with speedfan to see what the various sensor readings are. Generally the CPU should be below 80 degrees Celsius and the hard drive/board should be below about 55 degrees Celsius. Optimal is below 70 and 50 respectively.

If switching to an SSD is an option, go for it. Considerably faster, quiet, no shock or heat damage issues.
