My BIG 2 cents.

Agreed. I am seriously thinking about renting an office, but the travelling sucks + the intenet connection is actually better at home. Fuck it, I still want an office, I am too lazy and constantly distracted here.

Sometimes you can 'split the baby' and work from home on 'little things' (checking email, etc) and save the heavy lifting for an office. But I wouldn't recommend renting out an OFFICE office. Try a virtual office deal where you also get space for x # of days per month. Or even find another home in the area close to you (less commuting) that has an office you can rent.

But if you're talking about renting an office space you better have the income to justify it.

Working from office - productive. Working from home - not so productive, to many distractions. So, I am for the office part which I like, more fun to have somebody to chat with, concentrate better on the job, see a new Model, visit the studio, usual stuff

If you rent small office space (for example 12 meters / 120 ft) it does not cost much. You do not need more than that.

If you want to run a business, you have an office.
If your biggest aspirations are to work in your pajamas, work from home

If the work is the same probably it's better working in the office...but if my home job is for my personal company, it's better than working in an office, but working at home probably you'll spend more time on your projects than working 8 hours in an office for a third part.

You do realize that it's possible for some people to have a comfortable office to be productive in their house, right? I once posted pics here in the forum of my home office setup with all my computers, tvs and miscellaneous hardware. A lot of people thought it was pretty cool. Of course it helps that I don't have a spouse or children to distract me, just a slightly needy cat.

I work from home. I have a full time dedicated office with two work stations and professional office / business desks - None of this Ikea shit.

I like working from home. No time wasted getting to and from the office, and no co-workers to distract me. And when I need to work after hours and weekends, it's not like I "have to go to the office".

in fact, this is my main work station:

Moved from a 1 bedroom apartment to a 2 bedroom loft last May, 2nd bedroom is now an office that has nothing in it besides computer/desk, printer, file cabinet, 5.1 surround so basically only go in the room to work, doorway faces my living room TV so I don't miss football if I got work to do, tv shows I just DVR but sports like to glance a bit while it's live, have an extra TV I could throw in the office but like to keep it strictly business with no distractions.

There's a difference from being self employed and running a company with a team of staff.

There is no right or wrong answer, it just depends on your goals and aspirations

If your goal is to be making 7 figures plus then an office is a requirement for most, the positives outweigh the negatives ten fold.

100% Home office since 2007.

I have a dedicated office in the house just for my business. My wife and kids understand that once the door is closed I am "at work" ... My productivity has been FAR better at the home office where I can think, plot and be free from the mindless office banter that just kills a few hours in a day.

My team has set times that we have conference calls to talk biz. We are very organized with our agenda and action plans.... This alone has saved a ton of the impromptu calls that also kill your "primetime" as I call the working hours.

Moving to home offices has made my team FAR happier. They can at times get the personal things done ( car to the shop for an oil change, pickup kids, have a decent lunch, etc ) and also perform at a much higher rate than when we were all in the office.

Once a month: We all meet up for lunch and talk live. At this point: Its good to see each other in person. This gives some human interaction outside my wife and son ... plus I also hang out with my friends every so often ( which is not all that much as were all married with kids now ) ... mostly I enjoy just being with my family at home.

My advice to be as productive as possible from home: Make your work space just that - your WORK space. Set time limits to be there .. In my case: From 730am to 6pm I am in my office and post 6pm I roll downstairs to see my family, have dinner and lounge about in my living room/outside if its nice out. The most I have at night near me is an iPad for non-work surfing and my phone....

Anyone looked into coworking? I tried it for a few months in London last summer to force myself to meet new people in a new city... The commute and interruption of my morning routine sucked though, I quit going after a couple of weeks. I get a lot of shit done rolling out of bed and hitting the computer with my morning coffee.

I've been working from home for 1.5 years now, I love it.

Some of the perks include afternoon nap time, and 3 hour long video game breaks, nonstop coffee and also no boss.

It does have disadvantages too though. I find I am getting a bit lazy. Without a boss, I have to think for myself which kinda sucks. Hehe

I am actually doing a 3 month contract in a "normal job" for a bit of extra cash, but also to get me back into a good working mode. Too many video game breaks and nap times and I need to get back into the groove.

It can be lonely, but with twitter, skype, and podcasts I feel like I am surrounded by people all day, even though it's just me here.

Why do people in Florida screen in their pools? They seem to be the only ones in the country that do this.

This is respectable and good that it works out for you. However most of the people are not that disciplined and they take breaks, do some home stuff etc. And productivity goes down.

I was wondering the same. Instead of utilizing great weather and having outside pool they choose to have inside pool with lots of windows.

Too many distractions, I can not imagine working in open space with everybody else around me like that... For me it must be closed office cabinet.

I'm pretty sure it's because of mosquitoes.

I use a home office and it works out fine. Nothing else happens in this room other than working on the computer. Also work from my laptop after "work hours" if needed.

I'm pretty sure that's it, but I still don't get it... We had mosquitoes in NJ where I grew up and didn't put up screens, and we have mosquitoes in Phoenix and California and don't do it there either.

Growing up in suburban NY state as a teenager we didn't have a screen over our pool either. It does help keep mosquitoes out which is a major convenience. But also look at the amount of trees and other decorative privacy foliage around my pool. It would be a right mess every day full of leaves, flowers and other plant matter that would require regular skimming if the screen wasn't there.

gators are cool they leave people alone, it is the banana spiders and other creepy crawlies and flying bugs you want to keep out of your mixed drinks while hot tubbing.

Both, but most of the work takes place at the office.

To quote a famous scene from the Devil's Advocate:

- Is there more to it?
- Just this room.
- And a bedroom?
- No bedroom.
- Where does he sleep?
- Who said he sleeps?
- Where does he fuck?
- Everywhere!

Apply the last line to the question "where does he work?" and you have your answer.

And for anyone wondering, yes, there are plenty of toilets in the office. (see last pic)

Thanks JFK for stopping by!

Who could have predicted that an industry full of anti social personalities, major ADD suffers and losers all are largely unanimous in the notion that working in their own place, at the time of their choosing, without structure, without supervision or real accountability is a really great plan for better productivity?

Frankly, i'm shocked.

Again what are we talking about?
I assume we are talking about doing the same thing either at home or in office. Meaning "time of choosing", "supervision", "structure" would be the same in both cases.

We are not speaking about being self employed VS working for another company.

Home office != no schedule. I'm really strict about it and usually wake a few minutes before the alarm due to being a well trained monkey. Plenty of daily accountability and what not. But anti social, sufferer and loser? Close enough.
