Facebook buys virtual reality headset firm Oculus for $2bn

Facebook has bought a virtual reality headset firm in an unexpected deal $2bn deal that puts it in a head on battle with Sony.

The social network announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, who are developing an innovative headset.

Facebook has announced it will buy Oculus VR, a Californian company which specialises in virtual reality products, for around $2bn (£1.2bn).

The firm's flagship product, the Oculus Rift, is an immersive headset for video gaming.

It was initially developed using cash secured on crowd-funding site Kickstarter.

Facebook's boss, Mark Zuckerberg, said Oculus' technologies could "change the way we work, play and communicate".

In a statement released on Tuesday, Facebook said it plans to expand the use of Oculus technologies to include "communications, media and entertainment, education and other areas".

More than 75,000 orders for Oculus Rift development kits have already been placed, according to the social media giant.

The deal includes $400m in cash and just over 23 million Facebook shares, valued at $1.6bn.

Commenting on the deal, Mr Zuckerberg said: "Mobile is the platform of today, and now we're also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow."

It is the latest purchase for Facebook, which last month spent $19bn on mobile messaging platform WhatsApp.

These VR headsets have been flirting with the market for 20 years. They won't make their $2 Billion back.

Well so much for porn applications... Sony & FB will never allow that...

I was approached at the AVN Show by a mainstream director who was interested in shooting adult content for it. That's probably not going to happen now. Oculus Rift was the only open door as far as I know.

Anyone know any other start up companies that use the same technology on an open non proprietary platform ?

Let you in on my problems...
I have been using the same male talent for a very long time. Needless to say they are getting old.

The problem is I have not had a single male under 35 that can come even close to getting the job done. Even with viagra the situation is a headache.

Perhaps the nerds will finally get lost in their make believe worlds and life can go back to normal for the rest of us.

These new goggles devices will be widely available for adult entertainment use in their 2nd or 3rd generation of development, 4 to 5 years probably.

Their application in the adult webcam industry would be trend setting obviously.

Buying startups is out of the question but creating applications for the devices' markets seems probable in time ...
