What's weird is I like Dave Grohl, but other than ~2 songs, can't seem to like ff.

Cobain's suicide seems to have allowed Dave to come out from behind the drum kit and show off his musician-ship, which he certainly seems loaded with. I wonder how it would have gone for him if Kurt never shot himself.

Yeah, from everything I've read he was really self-consciously in Kurt's shadow. I remember one Cobain quote something to the effect of "Dave always seems to be auditioning for the band, like we've never fully accepted him". It's probably why he's kinda refreshing for a rock star, seems like a genuinely decent humble guy without the blimp sized ego.

Unfortunately like you I find FF mostly boring musically.

Personally, I think Dave would have left, eventually. You cannot keep a musician with talent of that magnitude bottled up for long. Foo's have definitely withstood the test of time. It likely would have played out the same way, regardless of Kurt dying or not.

You can be sad something happened but not let it destroy you. Well done to him for not giving up on his own life and career because somebody else decided they were ready to do so with their own.

FF is one of the better live acts I have seen. When myself and Tofu saw them we both commented that he is one of the few current performers to be able to fill a huge venue with a genuine 'I am a rock star' vibe. All while never pretending to be Nirvana which has made it possible for me to enjoy both separately.

My favorite of this songs is Stacked Actors but I'm a weird person.

The first album has some songs that sound a bit like hybrid Foos/Nirvana stuff but that is probably as much the era as anything else. They shook that off fairly quickly though.

It took me a bit to get into them and I don't love every song but they have matured with each album. The last one sounded more classic rockish leaning than anything.

What do you mean by 'not in any form'? I ask because the surviving members of Nirvana have played together fairly often as part of the Sound City promotions. I saw them play Hollywood Blvd last year. Now, they didn't play any Nirvana songs. So, if that is what you mean than okay but they have all played together. Sometimes with Paul McCartney joining in on the fun so maybe you are right there.

It's hard enough to find success and leave such a large mark on the world with one rock band. Harder still to find success with a second band (and still be relevant after almost 20 years), and even more impressive to find that second success playing an entirely different role and instrument

Dave was writing and recording demos of the songs that would eventually become the first Foo Fighters album while Nirvana was still together and actively touring. I have a feeling that eventually he might have done a solo project while Nirvana was on a break. If it ended up going as well as Foo Fighters did he very well may have walked away from the band.

Personally, I think even if Kurt hand't killed himself that Nirvana wouldn't have lasted a whole lot longer. It was pretty well-known that Kurt didn't like living a public life not to mention having a kid and having drug problem. Had he lived I wouldn't have been shocked if they had done 1 or 2 more albums then called it quits.

Foo Fighters have never played a Nirvana toon live to my knowledge, and the surviving members of Nirvana have never performed as Nirvana since Cobain's death.

When asked if he would ever cover a Nirvana track live, (Grohl) said: "Every once in a while we talk about it.

For the Sound City gig here in London we were thinking about musicians that we could invite because Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty couldn't make it. Someone came up with the idea of doing a Nirvana song with PJ Harvey. Kurt loved her and we love her and we thought, 'Yeah, what would we do?' I said: 'God, what if we were to do 'Milk It' from 'In Utero' with Polly singing?' We all looked at each other like, 'Woah, that would be amazing?' and then she couldn't do it!"

He continued: "The thing is, it's sacred ground. If we were ever to do something like that it would have to be right because you want to pay tribute. There's a reason Foo Fighters don't do Nirvana songs, and it's a good reason."

I might disagree. Foo Fighters have clearly left their mark and are a great band, but Nirvana was the spearhead that changed the direction the music industry was going. When Nevermind came out radio and MTV were being dominated by hair bands and the glam rock sound. A year later many of those bands were all but dead and radio and MTV were being dominated by alternative rock bands. Some of the big glam rock/metal bands survived, but Nirvana helped usher in a new sound and they gave rock a new identity.

But just being alive for the last 20 years making music, collaborating and all of the other projects Grohl has his fingers in makes me feel like he's just as -- if not more important -- than Kurt Cobain at this point. Just the breadth of his work is amazing. He's existed as a big force in the rock world for 4 times longer than Nirvana, and showed he's more than that guy behind the drum kit flinging his hair around.

Very true. Dave has not just done great stuff with Foo, but other bands and, like you say, he has had his hands in a lot of things.

I guess it comes down to the debate of which is more important to an art form: A guy with longevity who puts in a 20+ year career, influences a lot of people and did some great stuff along the way, or a guy who had one major, explosive moment and changed the direction of his field.

I suppose it could be debated forever.

Either way, the world is a better place having had both of them in it.

That's certainly crossed my mind although it something we'llnever know. as destructive a force as kurt kobain was, things could have gone a lot differently if he hadn't offed himself. Even if the band thrived, Grohl could have been compelled to stay behind the drums and contribute to nirvana. Either way, it seems that he would have been a much different person if cobain hadn't shot himself.

Nirvana was a game changer for sure. They changed music and opened it up for all those other bands. I love both bands. Dave Grohl has had a huge impact on music over the years.

Do you remember what music sounded like just before Nirvana came around? It was all hair metal which had already been around for a long time and getting really boring. Nirvana was THE sound of the 90's that inspired dozens of others.

That being said though, I like Grohl and Foo Fighters much more than I ever liked Nirvana. Grohl can sing, play, and seems like a humble, nice guy. And he taught himself to play drums too. Impressive.

The Beatles only released albums over about 7 years.
Grohl has several good songs, plays drums insanely well and has contributed a lot. But by and large his music is paint by numbers B.L.A.N.D. - you can't even begin to compare it to Kurt's.
I remember seeing FF at a festival in '94 and he just wouldn't shut the fuck up and play. Seriously he went on and on and on like he was coked out of his mind chatting longer than the actual songs. The AIDS and vaccine denialism (not that that specifically comes from Grohl) is fucktarded too. Everlong is pretty good though.

last days is a good watch. it is a dramatization about the last days of kurt's life but not sure how accurate it is filmmakers have to be careful with documentaries/dramatisations they should be true to history it might still be on youtube to stream. the actor who plays him does some pretty crazy shit again not sure how much it reflects his history.
