what is a CEO to you

interesting comments in the other post and some very good ideas if impractical in todays society...

to me a CEO is in real terms a 'producer'.. I have 2 businesses right now and I am CEO of both... the content biz and now my mainstream off line biz....

in the mainstream biz we have a myself CEO, CMO, CFO and CTO... I work with the CMO on product placement, future products and advertising media, with the CFO on tax payments, budgets etc... the CTO on web and IRL data control and disbursement.... I basically coordinate between the departments, set deadlines and follow up on EVERYTHING....

I also have a buddy with a trade school that he is CEO of and we both agree, 'we make it happen' btw now you know what 'conservatives' talk about when we get together

your thoughts? especially those of you with actual businesses ...

CEO in the top person in a corporation's executive committee.

The CEO approves major policy implementations and coordinates innovation, changes, etc.

The CEO is also the title of a corporate business owner but the two responsibilities are very different.

To me, the CEO is the chief champion of the company's mission. They provide the vision and contribute to overarching brand strategy. They are often "blue sky" and irrationally exhuberant while motivating and setting the course of the company.

For small business, The CEO gets paid to come up with and implement the ideas that employees then carry out. In big business, its a bit more complicated and refined depending on the corp.

The CEO is the leader that builds other leaders and gets shit done, if he/she can't, gives it to someone to get it done; at least a good one does

I am the CEO of multiple companies on paper, although I am really the owner more than anything else.

A CEO is someone who runs a large company, and can be replaced by the owner or board of directors or the stockholders at a moment's notice.

The role you're describing for yourself is that of the President or controller, not the CEO.

Small companies (fewer than 500 employees) rarely need more than one or two C-level employees. In a larger company, a CEO's job is mostly administrative inside and proselytative outside. In a smaller company, they are responsible for the vision, the direction, the fire. The top-down strategy of "what do we attack next," whereas the CMO determines how best to take that direction from the CEO and run with it.

What you call yourself is really meaningless in a small company, as everyone is probably wearing multiple hats if your management is competent.

That's not what he's saying. He's saying that who gives a fuck about the title, just make it happen. A few guys sitting in a room calling themselves CEO, CTO, CMO, CFO and whatever the fuck else are the guys I wouldn't trust to run a lemonade stand. If it's working for you, great, but why have C-level employees if they have no one to manage? It's just ego-stroking and nothing else.

I agree with Rochard and with 12clicks. The SBA defines their purview as the 28 or so million businesses with fewer than 500 employees. Of these, like 20 million are just one person. For various filings, one might identify a CEO. I certainly feel like the job is different in my businesses where people work for me. The job would be very different if I answered to shareholders in public etc.

But when people talk about CEO and executive compensation, I think the SBA definition of above 500 employees is probably pretty appropriate to what folks mean.

To me what a CEO is and does can vary greatly depending on the actual company. For example, the CEO of a company that has 100 employees is likely to be heavily involved in the day to day operation of the company. They may be very hands on carry out a variety of different tasks in any given day/week. The CEO of a company like Intel or Microsoft is more like the captain of a ship. They make big decisions and choose the direction the company is going to go in. They are the figurehead and public face of the company. They are less likely to be involved in the day to day minutia of running the business and are much more involved in the big picture.

Exactly. I agree. That's the kind of thing I was referring to as various filings.

The CEO is the person who gets paid extra to take a hit when shits hit the fan :wink wink:
He answers to shareholders / investors and executes (and sometimes create) the company strategy.
Most CEOs in smaller businesses is also the CTO, CFO, CMO, assistant, customer service, general support and a consultant.
