What's your thoughts on this bowe bergdahl guy and the trade for 5 known terrorists?

Is bowe bergdahl a traitor? Why was it 5 for 1? What happened to "we do not negotiate with terrorists?" What's up with the soldiers all saying he's a traitor?

Did Obama just free five terrorists in exchange for 1?

The whole "we don't negotiate with terrorists" thing is just something Bush said, there's no rule against it and it's been done plenty of times in the past. Hell, the Israelis traded over 1000 Palestinian prisoners for ONE captured soldier in 2011. And say what you will about the Israelis, but no one ever accused them of being soft.

And no doubt the Taliban are fanatical scum, but "terrorists" is just a label. They were the government of a country, we invaded and deposed them, they couldn't match us on the battlefield so they elected to fight a guerrilla war. Bergdahl was more a prisoner of war rather than a simple "hostage".

Afghanistan can't be won by military means, we've established that - ya gotta make peace with the Taliban as a large % of the country is on their side. This exchange was meant as a diplomatic overture, ideally to open a gateway to a relatively stable Afghanistan for the first time in 30+ years. We've had backroom peace talks with them for a while and now things are coming to fruition.

This Bergdahl guy sounds like a loose cannon, he's obviously not a war hero, but in every war we've done whatever it takes to get our POWs back. By the accounts I've read he was mentally unstable to begin with, and probably finally cracked and deserted his unit, just walking out into the night. It happens in war. He'll face justice here.

That's how I see it. Of course the GOP and right in general will take every single aspect of this and paint it in the least favorable light, even though they'd be doing the opposite if say it was Romney in the White House.

Obama is a naive idiot, whose foreign policy and blunders keep coming in at an astounding pace. Forget right and left, experts on foreign policy time and time again say his moves are awful for the USA, and the follow up actions on Obama's part confirm it. Obama just did a foreign policy "reset." Every time you hear the word "reset" - it just means he fucked up, so now he's trying something else, after shit just went down. Syria, Ukraine, Iran, you name it - he's a failure. Hope and change my ass.

Bergdahl was a deserter. Forget the argument of whether it was right or wrong to do it. Obama threw a fucking celebration in the Rose garden with his parents when he announced this. He obviously wasn't up to speed with the entire situation. They obviously fucked up the entire talking points. Speaking of "talking points" *cough* Movie *cough* Libya.

And I think it was a mistake to free 5 of the worst terrorists for this one guy. What type of message does that send? Do people not realize the Taliban hand-picked these guys..

It's insane to defend Obama over this. He may have actually violated a law buy not going to Congress, and he overrode internal objections to do this, in a very fast manner. He did this to distract everyone from the VA scandal, which is another scandal of epic proportions because he couldn't manage his way out of a brown paper bag.

Obama is just as bad as George W, you can make the argument he's slightly better since George W was a pretty big jerkoff. If you don't realize that, then you're looking at the world thru rose-colored lenses. Obama = nice guy, but an epic idiot.

He could've gotten rid of gitmo years ago. This was a political move to get the press to stop talking about the VA scandal.

I might even agree about distracting from the VA scandal but just one question: Where would he have sent all Gitmo inmates? No one wants them and simply releasing them to their home countries? I don't want to imagine how the Reps blow up in that case.
