8mm camcorders had mostly replaced VHS cams by 1993.

Still...amazing to think how many separate products are replaced by a smartphone these days.

Indeed...and if our economy has not been based on the automotive industry things would be different. Of course, with the billions of money made using fossil fuels there was no financial motive for investing in other technologies...hopefully it is not too late for that.

Heard on the radio the other day the average car owner uses $20,000 bucks worth of gas during the lifetime of an average vehicle.

Time and comfort cost money. Why wouldn't they count how much he would pay for the bus for the lifetime of an average vehicle... Specially if one is driving not alone, but with his family.

What is an alternative? The basic combustion engine was invented long before the silicon wafer chip or the electronic bi-stable circuit. Rockets and planes have the jet, but that isn't practical for cars. Electric seems to be moving along, Hydrogen seems like a pipe dream, what other propulsion systems exist that could be utilized?

People in charge doesn't want the gas engine to change. It's just as simple as that. They've delayed progress BIG time.

So America will milk it for every penny it's worth and that's exactly why we're decades behind where we should be with renewable energy.

The Germans have some of the most expensive electricity costs in the EU because of how heavily subsidised their green energy policy is. With that said their energy prices will go down in the long term as green technology becomes more efficient and gas and oil prices continue to increase.

Sadly renewable energy still only accounts for around 12% of Germany's power generation

The Germans are an excellent example of people who are thinking long term and I commend them for it. To be fair there is a EU wide directive concerning renewable energy targets but it's no where near good enough!

Just IMO but I think it should be compulsory for every household to be a micro power generator using renewable energy, same goes for food generation through hydroponics or whatever method.

Even if we set a percentage say 20% - 30%, enough to act as a backup source incase the system fails and people can keep the lights on and essential appliances working for a while. We're all far too reliant on a centralised system when it comes to our energy and food needs and as soon as it fails for a short amount of time we're gonna be absolutely fucked!

The UK & US did a documentary each based on a Cyber Attack that hit the nations electricity grid Blackout UK & Blackout US

The Summary of both? 1 week and we'd have anarchy and marshal law declared

If they can't make good engine to travel 100km with 1l of gas and maybe some cheap additional battery supply to cover up 10-20km per 100km (for some city size car) i will kill myself right away...
