public transit is good enough in NYC that you should where you get the best hotel for the best deal and hop around on the subways to get where you need to go.
Chelsea is really nice. Hotels around Midtown tend to be a bit groady, typically. Try Air BnB too!

Actually, here's a tip from a native New Yorker: if you don't mind changing hotels then use Hotel Tonight, a neat app that gives you the best last-minute deals in town. So stay at a place, then the next morning check Hotel Tonight and choose another place.
By doing this you will always have a hotel half-off (or better) and also get to experience different neighborhoods, etc. We're talking paying $100 or less for a NYC hotel room that usually goes for $300+. Have fun!! ![]()

An NYC pro would tell you not to stay in a hotel that was located near "touristy stuff"

I like the East Side Marriott on Lexington Ave & 48th. It's a few blocks from Grand Central, next to the W, and kitty corner from the Waldorf, but way cheaper than those hotels.

Try the London hotel, it's a block away from central park, top floors will get you central park views.

try the Warwick Hotel.
http://warwickhotels.com/new-york I stayed there for the last Leadscon and loved it. They even upgraded me to a suite for the same rate. I've also enjoyed the Park Central Hotel when my kids were younger. It's across from Carnegie hall and next door to the Carnegie Deli. http://www.parkcentralny.com/

A NYC hotel room sans roaches and bedbugs is going to cost you.
