Why do hangovers last days when you're over 40?

In my 20's and 30's, I could throw back enough booze to kill most smaller sized people. Hit the sack at 4am, wake up at 8am, go to the gym, work, fuck a bitch or two, go to the beach, go fishing, and feel like a million fucking dollars.

But now that I'm over 40, I drink a pint and a half of Scotch, and I'm fucking sick for three God damn days! Start drinking at 7pm, in bed by 10pm. Down a couple huge glasses of water to rehydrate, and I still wake up at noon feeling like I just got dropped out of a fucking plane! And that fucked up feeling doesn't go away for 2-3 days. I drank Sunday night at a social event, and I'm still hung over. Jesus H. Christ, getting old sucks!

Yours waited till you were 40? Mine hit me in my early 30s. Being old and hung over aint no fun. I guess it’s a way for your body to tell you you’ve had enough booze in your life to kill 6 nuns and a priest so maybe you should take it easy form here on out.

Here you go:

From http://nihseniorhealth.gov/alcoholus...daging/01.html

Quote:
As people age, they may become more sensitive to alcohol's effects. One reason is that older people metabolize, or break down, alcohol more slowly than younger people. So, alcohol stays in their bodies longer. Also, the amount of water in the body goes down with age. As a result, older adults have a higher percentage of alcohol in their blood than younger people after drinking the same amount of alcohol.

Aging lowers the body's tolerance for alcohol. This means that older adults can experience the effects of alcohol, such as slurred speech and lack of coordination, more readily than when they were younger. An older person can develop problems with alcohol even though his or her drinking habits have not changed.

Tell me about it. Put away a 40, bang a bitch (no two's, sorry) and still rant and rave cause everyone is going to bed when the sun comes up cause I'm still ready to party!

Now, I throw away 1 or two pints every Friday night and if I am not careful, I cant feel my finger tips for 3 days, cranky 1 day and sore for 2 (though, that might be the pool games, i tend to win a lot, so break a lot and my shifty ribs dont like that)

Here's my advice to drink in old age:

Eat a good base when you start slowly. Something healthy but sticks to the ribs. As your stomach clears the food, its safer then to hit the bottle harder. Hemp hearts into a stirfry with lots of rice or something. Works for me..

For every ounce of booze, 3 ounces of water.

Don't pig out on junk food, you can't clear the toxins and complex shit properly when drunk.

Do NOT go to bed drunk, ever. Sober up first until its just a good buzz. Otherwise, you will have the WORST sleep of your life and for an hour asleep drunk, you basically lose 3 hours of body repair you normally get. You also most like won't hit REM often enough, so toxins will never get cleaned out until the morning when you wake, hence, the body damage and sickness. You also wake up often when sleeping drunk. You don't realize it, but your old body will realize it the next day.

Also, The darker the liquor, the more you'll feel like the shitter...

Avoid cheap stuff, drink higher quality booze and if hard stuff, 45% or more in higher brands. Cheap stuff will make you feel like ass, all the impurities your now old kidneys and liver cannot flush.

Speaking personal experience here.. the only one that doesn't ruin me anymore is clearer bourbon. Maker's Mark seems good for mid-level drink and not too dark.

ALso, throw that manly "I dont break the seal crap" out the window... piss when it demands. Less chance of hangover.

The worst hangover I have ever had was just before I turned 40. Every year some friends and I go to this seafood and wine festival. We make a full weekend of it. Normally we arrive Thursday afternoon, get settled, go to dinner and hang out that night then hit the festival the next day, and spend the next two days eating, drinking and having fun.

I made the mistake of drinking on Thursday night. I got hammered drunk then the next morning I felt great. We got to the festival and the minute I walked into the tent the hot air and the smell of the food hit me and I got instantly sick. I was miserable for the rest of the day and most of the next day.

Know the feeling. Try getting your sixpack back, and keeping it. Even worse then having the hangovers.

when you were younger you probably drank more regularly? so your body adapted to alcohol, your tolerance was higher, etc...

dehydration, you are more susceptible to it as you get older and if you don't drink enough water that same night before you go to bed you will wake up hung over, sleep in and further dehydrate yourself and the circle continues.

That and if you binge drank when you were younger you probably just didn't remember the hangovers as much because you probably drank through it heh

I'm always baffled at idiots fighting hangovers. Your liver requires a great deal of water to process alcohol. All you have to do is drink water as you drink. Its that fucking simple. Drink a glass of water with every drink and eat food as you drink and you'll never ever be hung over. Or continue being a fucking retard. Your choice. Alcohol poisoning is the personal choice of a total moron... not a requirement.

Hydration is KEY.

If you know you're going to get banged up at night, drink plenty of water during the day. I drink a gallon or so per day as is, but if I plan on attending an all day cook out, I'll increase my water intake. Before I leave I set two 40oz water bottles on my nightstand. When I get home I'll slam one bottle, pop two aspirin . I'll wake up around 5am, take a leak, slam more water and catch 3 more hours of sleep. 8/9am rolls around and I feel like a champ. slam more water and get some breakfast in you. I like egg omelets with grilled veggies on the weekends.

By the way, Tylenol (AKA Paracetamol) stops you liver from recovering after alcohol, if you're taking it it will be the reason you haven't recovered yet.

When I drink, like last night, I drink rum on the rocks with either a diet soda or water back.
I don't get hangovers, never really did. I'm over 50.
Last night went out with friends on the bikes and had a fun time. This morning I was a slow in getting started, but doing fine now!

A month or so ago I knocked back the last 4 beers in the fridge. Beer store was too far to walk...and I wasn't about to drive. So I snuck into the wife's liquor cabinet and found an unopened bottle of stuff that resembled (and tasted like) Grand Marnier. I'm not much of a liqueur drinker, but was pleasantly surprised it went down rather nicely.

Forgot to pace myself. Somehow forgot I'm on the verge of 50 this summer, lol.

Before I realized it, I'd gone through the bottle.

Not my brightest moment. Although I can normally still plow through 14-16 beers in a night and still function with minimal hang time the next day - not so much with liqueur.

I *did* somehow manage enough presence of mind to toss back a few Aleve and a bigass cup of ice water before crashing for the night - but the AM was still rather brutal. And the PM. Despite it all - still kept my streak alive of not missing a day's work due to imbibing. Small measure of consolation.
