President Barack Obama has chosen former Procter & Gamble Chief Executive Bob McDonald, an Army veteran, as his nominee to be the next secretary of veterans affairs, a senior Obama administration official said on Sunday.

Obama's announcement of McDonald, 61, will be made this week, possibly on Monday. If confirmed by the Senate, McDonald would be tasked with repairing the Veterans Administration after widespread evidence of delays in military veterans getting healthcare at VA facilities.

I think this is a very good choice, he has the experience of running Proctor and Gamble, he went to West Point for the Army and graduated top 2%. He came from a military family.

Even Boehner likes this pick.

Hopefully congress can get this thru and the mess over there can finally get straightened out!!

I would rather have a vet in there with the background this guy has, the VA hospital system is huge and with his military and commercial background, I think this is probably the best choice there is.

First he had to deny he knew anything, then he had to put something else in the news to redirect it, then he could deal with it, that's what he does.

i think its more off base. when i was a kid people were more personal about people. he' s vet is not enough

The VA hospital is not just about injured Veterans. Any Veteran can use the system, a lot of the people going there are just getting general care.

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about that part of his resume. If nothing else it shows that he knows how to run a major entity and stay on budget. I'm hoping the combination of his military service/connections and his business knowledge will him come up with common sense ways to fix the problems.

Veterans, especially those that served in combat and/or were wounded during their service deserve the best care we can give them. Hopefully this guy can help restore some of that.

Looks like a good choice, but even if this guy 10 times above anyone else's level, the problem at the VA will take years to straighten out. The computer system is 1985 era, and that's just for starters.

Sometimes it is better to bring a qualified person who is not part of an agency's (VA) system to shake things up and make real progressive systematic changes in an agency.

That said, he only has a couple of years to accomplish this as this is a political appointment. Start cracking the whip -- time stands still for no man ....

The position this guy is going to fill has always been filled with retired generals, Doctors or politicians. Never a business man.

I'm all for letting a business man run it.

If he can make it run efficiently, the cost shouldn't go up very much. Unless they want a billion dollar IT budget like the IRS that can't keep past emails or spend 1.6 million on hotel accommodations like the EPA for one convention.

For the same reasons no other president since the 80's have. Once a vet is no longer on the battlefield they are no longer a profit for the government, just an unneeded expense according to most in Washington.

1988 Reagan signed the Department of veterans Affairs act, which made the VA hospital more important in the scheme of political things

In 1993, Clinton tried to reform the VA healthcare system, what happened was more veterans were able to use the VA for primary care.

There has been a lot of improvement, like all their records are digital, and easy to access. I can access my records online, I could get refills on prescriptions and have them delivered via mail. Talk to my doctor via secure email.

Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants think about that
