Yes there is. It's my current setup from a few years ago.
I feel i'm paying too much so I'm shopping around - feel free to spam here or PM. Interested in a similar setup or something more modern. What's the proper hosting etiquette anyway? Is it okay to contact sales once every year and ask for a mark down on prices? |

I can do with unmanaged too.
http://www.wholesaleinternet.com prices are too good to be true. Maybe their network isn't very good. Datacenter is in Kansas, middle of nowhere. |

their network is cheap but for the price you get what you pay for.

if you want to base your online business on someone calling their hosting "wholesale"... then you don't really give a shit about your online business or its a simple hobby.

Ask them for a bit of a discount. How long have you had the machines for?
Also, if you shop around -- drop the whole "need a Dell". Supermicro is just as good, if not better. Don't forget that the managed portion is approx. $100/month from your bill. I could see them dropping you to approx $300/month on each machine. Do you have any additional business you can throw them? Like maybe a 3rd server? |

Thanks for the help BTW. What kind of HDD solution would you suggest for a video streaming site like tube or paysite? I need large storage for all the content, but i need the databases response to be snappy. Does some kind of SSD + HDD solution exist for this? |

Noooo... not drop $300.. thats really unrealistic for quality. I meant drop each one to $300/month.
$200/month for a good server(medium spec like yours) + $100/month for good management is about realistic at a company that will stay in business and be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with good techs. ----- You could fit what you are doing all on 1 server, yes. Like this for example (using newer specs that you may see at a host now a days, if you moved): Intel Xeon E3-1230v1, v2, v3 or something along those lines (like E3-1240,1270, etc) 16GB DDR3 RAM 2x 2TB SATA3 HDD - RAID1 1x 256GB Samsung 840 Pro or Intel DC S3500 SSD LSI 9271-4i Hardware RAID Controller HOT-SWAPPABLE DRIVE CHASSIS (very important in case of drive failures). Setup your file storage on the spinning disks (HDD) and setup your database on the SSD. Plus keep daily backups OFF-SERVER on the hosts managed backup solution (whatever they have). That above is like a $250-300/month server + $100/month management (approximations for average cost breakdowns). I didn't include RAID1 for the SSD / DB drive cause SSD failure rate is very much less than a HDD. You could add another SSD but expect price to raise by approximately $50/month - this would save you any downtime if one SSD did die and you had to restore the database from backups. So you could combine your 2 current servers into 1 newer server... making your price (with RAID1 HDD & SSD) $450/month --- saving you $385/month. Then add your 3rd (now 2nd...) for whatever you planned on using it for. |

Once a year is too often/quick. They need like 6 months or more (depending on pricing of initial hardware purchase and all other costs related with your service delivery) just to barely recoup upfront costs. I would say once every 2 years is good though! Either for a free upgrade (usually much preferred than taking a loss in revenue) or a discount. Go for an upgrade or refresh though and that should make both you and the host happy. If you are happy with the management on your current servers, just ask your host to refresh your hardware with the above listed spec type and also see about adding another machine (this would be your 2nd , not 3rd now) to try and keep them motivated to do it for you since you will be keeping your revenue level with them approximately the same but getting a whole lot newer and more powerful shit. |
