Pros and cons of CDN hosting?

Let us discuss CDN hosting. When should one go for it?

I have about 4TB of content that I need to serve to surfers. What would be the optimal way to host it? So far i have these options:

- set it up on cloud and hook it up to CDN
- get a large storage dedicated server and hook it up to CDN
- get a large storage dedicated server and serve directly from it (no CDN)

What do you think?

Make your own CDN - get one server in europe, two for east and west coast us,and one for asia(or without that one if you dont have valuable traffic from there). It will cost much much less then going with complete solution.

So you'd need 4 servers for that.

I honestly don't think it would be cheaper.

If you asking for CDN,then you must be having enough traffic to justify such expense, otherwise i dont see point for CDN.Plus you can find server price from 50$ monthly.

CDN does more than place files on a servers throughout the world. If he went your route, how would he know what file to serve? How would he make sure all files he uploads are on all servers?

Go with CDN.

Go with CDN.
If you reffer to technical part of problem, then yes if he wants complete solution without bothering technicalities ,cdn would be better solution. But again he can also pay system adminstrator/coder to prepare solution.

You start going that route and it's gonna end up being way more costly than just using a CDN, and then to what? Mimic a CDN? Waste of time.

What if I told you, you have a technical background and can most likely do this, but he doesn't?

4TB of storage - but how much bandwidth?
That's the key questions since it affects the price the most.
Some users can push that content 5 or 10 times during the month...

But also just storing 4TB of data could cost a lot depending on a provider.
Here are some sample prices:
- LeaseWeb CDN = €4,000/month
- MaxCDN = $4,000/month (40 x $99)
- ISPrime = $300-$500
- CDN77 = only $380
- Amazon S3 = only ~$125 (4*1024*$0.03)

So before picking one, make sure to have all the prices and calculations to avoid high bill at the end of the month.

So with a CDN/Cloud I’m going to guess it seems like all your traffic comes from one place (the cdn or cloud ips in access logs)? How do you tell who is in your system if that is the case?

Good questions.

The same way we do with our current hosts? They provide our access logs? Just a guess though.
