Talk smack all you want but anyone here do any volunteer or community help stuff?

Is this a waste of time or do you think helping others is a good thing?

It is good thing, but problem is, it always involve psychical work which i am not fan of.
I am sort of fanatical follower of proverb "if you give a man a fish, you feed him for one day.If you learn him fishing ,you feed him for entire life",so i would more prefer to hold free educational courses.

I walk dogs at the Humane Society. It's only 8 hours a month, but I get just as much out of it as I give. Win. Win.

i do about 65 hours a month in volunteer work across 3 different orgs, plus i have a charity I run every year in my sig and another not for profit that does free design work for 501.c.3's

of course it is worth it to help those in need. Nothing in the world quite like it

I commit at least 14 hours a week to volunteer work. It allows me to do what I love in beautiful places and interface with people from all walks of life.

The most fulfilling part of my week.

I spend at least 5 hours a week blowing homeless guys in the alley.

Just trying to do my part to better their lives.

We do... I don't discuss it here because I don't want our charity work finding out I am (was) involved in adult.

I have a family. I take care of my nuclear family and help as much as I can with my extended family.

That pretty much takes up my resources.

If everyone did the same, there wouldn't be a lot of need for charity work. (except in cases like St. Judes and other things of that nature)

I currently foster 3 cats, and one puppy for a local rescue. In NJ and looking to adopt? I'm your go to!

Once a month I go to the SPCA and take photos for them to market online of the dogs/cats.

between 10 - 15 hours a week giving back to a place that helped me out in ways I can never repay. As said... nothing quite like it, and I get more out of it than they do.

Once around Christmas, the Ikea near me was selling Teddy Bears for only $8.00. I purchased what they had left (about 100) and gave them to the Montreal Children's Hospital.

I have done some stuff in the past and do a few things each year.

I live in pretty small town. I have given, at the request of the city leaders, a few free classes on how to use filtering software to keep your kids from getting on sites you don't want them on.

There is a local vet that works hard to allow people to finance their bill if their pet needs a lot of help. He also tries to do free stuff those those in need. Every year the town has a big weekend long "festival" with a big local market. The last few years I have volunteered to help them run their booth at this event and raise money for these things.

Yes, it is worth it when you see the results of your hard work.

Most people know we created one of the first 501 (c) 3 charities via the Webmaster Toy run.

The webmaster toy run has been helping children that are sick, ill, underprivileged and in Foster care.

When you see the kids faces light up from a toy, a new backpack or even a trip of lifetime to Disneyland it makes everything you do worth while.

I encourage everyone that can get involved helping those less fortunate to do so...it's the most cathartic thing you will do.

I'm pretty time poor these days. I donate money to a heart research charity (I have a bad heart) and to an organisation that does rehab work for returned military personnel.

Any pediatric oncology ward will shake you up. Kids sitting in sterile wards waiting in pain to die. They can't play, can't be touched, and everyone treats them like glass. I wish to fuck I was smart enough to cure cancer.

I work with the Guardian ad litem program for Florida. We act as advocates for the kids involved in cases where the state is considering taking the child away from the family. We basically try to help the family get it together so that the state won't have to take the kid, and help the kid through the court process, etc... It's very rewarding most of the time because you actually get to help a child that really has no one else on his side to help navigate the system. I also work with a charity that assists veterans in getting jobs, and I do underwater trash pickup with a group of other divers once a month.

I'm a busy guy, with my business and my family, but it is all very worthwhile to me. My son is going to be 3 in September, and starting next year, we will all be volunteering for various things during the holidays, to start a family tradition.

It's up to you. Personally, I believe in helping people, and the environment, around me. I DON'T believe that I should have the power to use armed government squads to be able to force my neighbors to help also. Voluntary is the key word here.

P.s. smack smack smack smack....

I do what I can as I can and however I can - I am not in the greatest of physical health, but I give what I can to help when I have it to give! Every year at Christmas, we buy toys for the kids and we give to Vets and such - as we can - not really any set amount or time or anything, but we do try and help where it's possible.

We also live in a very small community so there really isn't the level of "need" like there is in larger communities - not the homeless - or anything like that. Mostly it's around holidays when things are needed the most around here and we do our parts and then some.
