Umm it's pretty easy to know how Ukraine knew it was the Rebels. It was because the Rebels boasted about shooting down a military transport plane and named the location where it crashed on VK.com

They told the world they did it and bragged about it before it was even news to the world. Then they discovered it was civilian, at which point they started trying to cover it up and started playing the blame game.

Fuck even Putin was trying to feed you conspiracy tools, when he said the bodies had been dead before the plane was shot down..

I have been in military service and I am a group leader, closest equivalent is probably sergeant (in US military).

I can say that the outcome is not predetermined. Outcome is not quaranteed in any ways, you just fight and kill enemies and maybe it turns out okay, maybe doesn't. There might be strategic and tactical withdrawals, but at some point you have to fight, despite of the outcome, because you can't know it beforehand.
