"The City of London police has started placing banner advertisements on websites believed to be offering pirated content illegally.

The messages, which will appear instead of paid-for ads, will ask users to close their web browsers.

The move comes as part of a continuing effort to stop piracy sites from earning money through advertising.

Police said the ads would make it harder for piracy site owners to make their pages look authentic.

"When adverts from well known brands appear on illegal websites, they lend them a look of legitimacy and inadvertently fool consumers into thinking the site is authentic," said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fyfe from the City of London Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (Pipcu).

"This new initiative is another step forward for the unit in tackling IP crime and disrupting criminal profits.

"Copyright infringing websites are making huge sums of money though advert placement, therefore disrupting advertising on these sites is crucial and this is why it is an integral part of Operation Creative."

The initiative will make use of technology provided by Project Sunblock - a firm used by major brands to stop adverts appearing alongside questionable content such as pirated material or pornography."

Depending where you live the all but brand their homes and persons with a scarlet letter. Being honest a convicted child molester should not be allowed to live in the general population, ever. But that is another story for another thread.

I think there would be more enforcement if the laws were not written with so much bullshit in the wording. There is a lot more legal stuff then just the DMCA laws also.

We all should know the protections built into DMCA are not in the favor of rights holders/IP owner. The current methods of piracy allow for the files to be replaced immediately after a take down. Safe Harbor is just a clause hosts hide behind.

Many of these businesses that do business with pirates claim ignorance or hide behind protections afforded by the laws. There are no moral ethics against this type of piracy in those businesses, we have witnessed it here on this site.

This case is an effort to reduce the monetization of stolen content through advertising, while it seems lame at least they are doing something.

so instead of making law that allows them to shut the site down, they are buying ads through some pro piracy network, so the police is at the end supporting piracy ... that is great, simply great

Actually it is my understanding that these notices replace paid advertising and the site receives no income from these served notices.

But the advertiser is getting paid or they would not serve them... and what will probably happen is that the owner of the pirate website will just swap sponsors and the police will have to go there to buy a new campaign.

What a way to waste time and money. You would think the police had something better to do, the UK National Cyber Crime Unit is usually pretty good people. I can't imagine any of them coming up with a move like this!

Edit: Just noticed this was a London police thing, that'd explain it lol
